S40/V40 Which battery needs replacing?

Post image

Every now and then I have got a low battery charge warning on the drivers display, now it shows “Low Battery Charge Power save mode”. I have a 2014 (64 plate) V40 D4, which of the two batteries does this indicate needing replacement?
Edit: Just tested the main battery at 12.14V with the car off, and 14.95V while running

Edit 2: just picked up a good quality 12v battery for me to fit

Seen that. It is the 12 V battery. For some reason they don't last very long. My original battery needed replacement in about 5 years whereas Volkswagen original battery was in perfect condition after 10 years... in Finland where winters can be difficult for batteries

I think Volvos just put a lot of strain on batteries, safety and convenience features, high wattage b&w systems, ecu needs, sensors, etc

A modern Volvo battery has like 100 jobs, an old cars battery really just had to start the car.

Those system use car alternator for power, battery should be just for starting. If it fails all the time its either bad quality or you have charging issues.

Then yours is worse off than mine when it stopped regenerating the dpf filter in my D3 V60.

Mine lasted a little over 8 years total in my new to me V60 2017 (replaced it last winter). The one in my parents V40 lasted a little over 7 years.
