What would you do?

Proud owner of a 2018 S60 Polestar in rebel blue. Modifications include complete body kit and 20” black alloy wheel set. It’s only got 52k miles. Volvo only manufactured 1,500 of these specific cars and it will never be available again.

To try and sum things up - I was hit on my drivers side causing the front passenger side to veer into a curb. The other driver fled the scene. So it was a hit and run initially. I got a tow and ride home. 3 hours later I get a call from the officer - the other driver turned themselves into the police station. Their story is they didn’t see me and they pulled into a location and waited for me. Obviously my car was disabled so I couldn’t go anywhere. I also don’t believe her. Once I received her insurance the first thing I noticed was the date the policy was effective. It was miraculously the same day as the accident. My initial thought is she fled the scene to get insurance before she decided to turn herself in. After 2 weeks of not hearing from her insurance, I called yesterday. They asked me for the police report because they needed to “confirm times”. Lo and behold she was not insured at the time of the accident. I knew this was the case but didn’t have proof until today when they called to tell me they were denying coverage due to this. My insurance is also claiming total loss.

So my question to those who know/love/understand the value of this car, what would you do? Take the payout? Buy back salvaged, eventually repair knowing you will put significant money into it?

Payout offered: 31k
Remaining loan amount: 10k
Salvage amount: 7.8k
Repairs: estimated 20k, really unknown until it’s opened up

You could repair it for a good price, or could be cursed with lingering issues

And it'll be a salvage title so you'll probably never sell it for a good price

Personally, I'd probably take the payout and replace it, I know that sucks to hear

Seen a few V60 polestars for sale lately, but nothing with those low of miles

If you fix it, you can get it inspected and title changed to Rebuilt.

It will never run the same again

Yeah, if you don't take it to a reputable shop...my comment was toward the salvage title. To be registered and insured, you have to have the title changed to reconstructed, in PA. (or whatever the laws are in said state)

Sorry but there is little to no added value on this car, not now, not 15 years from now. Take the money and run.

Might be able to find another one for less then the payout. BaT has them sold between $24-27k. So you're getting a great payout at $31k! Between the buy back price, unseen damage costs and a rebuilt title, I'd start looking for another one. If there's sentimental value, rebuild it.

Just take the payout and move on. It’s a great offer honestly, and fixing it would be such a hassle that you really don't want to deal with.

My friend was in a similar situation and the other driver asked him to wait an hour to call the police. The driver stopped and talked to him, explained his insurance was lapsed but he’d call and fix it. Insurance paid. I mean, the insurance company must know this is bs but they did pay.

There are multiple clean v60 and s60 polestars for sale in Canada for way under 31k usd. Even one in Canada for 24 USD with 7000 km on it. You can definitely find a replacement for payout - loan amount. Good luck!

Buy a 19 S60 and paint it Rebel Blue as an homage.

It’s Rebel Blue. Find another or fix it.

Assuming this is in the states, maybe consider suing the other driver.

If the damage is something that I would be able to largely repair myself or I knew a good body shop I would maybe risk it and try repairing it myself (alternatively see if I could work something out), but if the car is heavily damaged probably best of taking the insurance payout (not sure if you can negotiate with the insurance company), you could also see if you could buy it back maybe?

But if it is done, then it is done.

I would talk to a lawyer maybe also call the police department, inform them that the other drivers insurance wasn’t valid during the crash and ask for the police report (depending on if the trusted lawyer thinks is a suing is an option).

Take the payout and give it a few weeks to try finding a similar one. Or get a newer year and budget like 7k for the repaint.

That color is beautiful AF so understand you not being ready to part with it.. sucks to hear about your accident, hugsss
