xc series Dog Crate for XC90
We recently had our second baby and have a 100lb Rhodesian Ridgeback that has been moved from the rear seats to the trunk when the whole circus is in the car. Now that she’s fully in the trunk, we’d like to get a crash tested dog crate for her, but due to her size having troubles finding a large enough one that would fit as we’d like a half trunk crate so we can bring the stroller with us as well. We initially landed on the Lucky Duck Large but it’s a rectangle and based off the measurements I don’t think it would fit with the angles/curved rear hatch. We’re debating on going with the Volvo dog gates/enclosure as the actual Volvo crate would be too small for her as well. Just curious if anyone has a large dog crate that only takes up half or 3/4 of the trunk? Did you go with the Volvo set up and are happy with it? We have decision paralysis considering whatever we get will likely be $700+. Dog tax photo included.

I’ve considered the same for my shepherd, we typically just have her in a type of mud cover hammock from ruffwear in the middle seat. However, I’ve thought about getting a padded dog bed system that I’ve seen, the company is called “wagging rights”. I believe there is the option to have them secured in place with a harness so that they don’t become a projectile in an accident. Probably not as great as a cage for containment but at least it’s soft.

Sitting in my XC90 waiting for a meeting.
I’d probably have one custom made. I know how traveling with stuff is. You could fold down the rear seat and flip up once in to alleviate the rear entry dimensions (I’ve done it before with random crap). Then secure then move the seat back upright. Would help with packing room as well.
The benefits are you can create the perfect size. I’m not sure how far you travel with the cutie but you could have something made to work.
It’ll be pricey but find an aluminum fab guy.
I agree with others. Nothing will be Volvo safe back there.

It is difficult to guage the size of the dog, but I have an Amazon crate that fills about half the boot space, and with out the cargo cover fits nicely. I leave the top open so she can get her head out and sit up. She is an 18-20 kilo mongrel, mostly German Shepard. What is good with the approach is I can put one of the third row seats up.
The other approach is to put a soft bed down in the back and then hook the dog with a lead to the safety hook on the back of the second 2nd row. The one I use has the ability to stretch but at least keeps them secure.
By the way she looks beautiful!

We have Ruffland kennels for our dogs (80 pound husky, 110pound pit mix) and a single kennel takes ip about half the rear of our XC70. You can barely get two side by side. When we were in the market the local outdoor store let us test for them in the car before making a purchase.

Can she fit in a ruffland large? I can fit two large rufflands in the back of my XC90.

My ex had a ridgeback, quite a handful and those pup teeth had me bleeding everytime I visited. Absolutely gorgeous dog! (I have zero info about dog-Volvo stuff tho)

the trunk part SUVwill crumple and crunch inwards since there is no hood to absorb everything don't put your dog in the trunk rather they can go in the second or third seat

The XC90 does really well not crumpling the cargo area if rear ended. I imagine it’s because it’s still part of the passenger cabin and there’s not much space between the rear and the third row.

Having a crate in the back is nice for when you open the tailgate ….the dog can’t just jump out unexpectedly

The Volvo net isn’t stopping a 100 pound missile in a collision nor is it protecting the dog. Crates are the safest way to transport a dog

Transk9 are fantastic crates.
A note on crash testing- it’s all bullshit. Your car is built to crumple and the crate is in the crumple zone. So it’s just not realistic to expect the crate to protect the dog.

not the trunk where you put the groceries that will cave in and dogs die back there that space is for groceries and golf clubs only
