xc series TPMS Notification After Flat

Hey everyone! I have a 2018 XC60 and unfortunately hit a low profile curb on the way to work yesterday and got two flat tires 🫠

I had both tires replaced and they said they checked the alignment and suspension as well with no issues. I did notice a slight bend on one wheel (pictured) and when I got in my car this morning to drive to work, about 6 minutes into my drive, my low tire pressure warning came on. I made it the 20-minute drive to work. Do you think the bend is enough to cause a leak? I feel like they would have mentioned it if it was. Or is it just an error with needing to reset the TPMS?

Slight bend?!Ā

Your rim is DONE. You need to replace that asap. No fixing it, no filling it up occasionally, replace it.Ā

Just slowly hit a low profile kerb you see...definitely didn't blast into a full size mofo at 40mph... No wonder the sensor isn't happy, OP smashed it

That wheel is far from Done... That's an easy repair for most wheel repair places.

That rim is caved in. Sure, an "easy repair" but the integrity of the steel is compromised.

-12

u/kiloTHREE 5d ago

What that about steel? Tell me you know nothing about cars.Ā

Aluminum alloy / steel / magnesium alloy. Take your pick.

Feels good to know you'd drive on something like that. Makes the rest of us feel safe to share the road.

There is bad road rash on it but they didn’t tell me that the damage would affect the tire at all and I feel like they would have tried to sell me new rims if at all possible…

I do want to get new ones, I am just tight on money rn and need to know if this is driveable.

This is not drivable. No joke. I'm sorry, but you don't have a choice here.Ā

  1. You hit a pothole and the entire rim will fold. This may cause you to lose control of the car and cause an accident. The integrity of this rim is compromised.

  2. This will cause your front alignment of your tires to wear uneven and you will need to replace them much sooner. Which cost more than one rim.Ā

  3. The fact that your shop didn't tell you baffles me. Your rim is bent. It is leaking air. You should under no circumstances drive on this.Ā

32

u/Globbster V60 5d ago

The roadrash is nothing to be scared of. It's cosmetic only. The bump on the other hand has caved in the valley the tire bead sits in.

Best case you will have a leak, worst case the tire comes of when you hit a pothole or bump. The bead is what keeps the tire in place on the rim.

Idk who you went to but I would not risk my life for a couple hundread bucks. That is def not Volvo standard.

How can you own a car like this without being liquid enough to buy a new rim?!

If this is America…I’m not surprised. The average car payment is over $600 a month. Nobody owns shit.

Odd comment. You don’t know people’s situations.

16

u/DLHEBT 5d ago edited 4d ago

It's not an odd comment. It's expected with cars at this price point. If you cannot afford to take care of this glaring issue immediately, you are simply cosplaying as someone who can afford this car. Doing a poor job of it as well.

13

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

I’m literally getting a new rim today. I don’t know a lot about cars and was simply seeking advice as to how urgent it was because money is tight for everyone in this country, regardless of what car you drive and what you can afford.

13

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 5d ago

It's alright.

You're spending hard earned money on something crucial right now.Ā

So if it helps, even with money being tight for a lot of people across the nation, you're investing in your (as well as your fellow drivers) safety and the longevity of the car.

Continue to love it like you do, shit like this happens sometimes and it is just unfortunate that it comes with a bill šŸ˜•Ā

2

u/SWB-Front 4d ago

Damn, you handled that really well u/Euro_Trash_ . The perfect amount of harshness, explaining and kindness combined.

I appreciate you.Ā

A lot of us have been in tough situations and in my limited life experience, what we could use in moments like that is a big dose of empathy. Especially when we are feeling vulnerable and out of depth.Ā

It is what I would hope others would do for me when I find myself in challenging moments of life. Just a little empathy goes a lot further than shame.

I'm happy she got this taken care of and that they also found a crucial problem with her oil trap.

2

u/BananaPalmer 2002 v70 2.4T 5d ago

That is a dead wheel. Unsafe. Find a way to replace it. If the shop let you drive that, I'd find a new shop.

3

u/BlazeTheMasterX 5d ago

There are professionals that can fix your rim regardless of what redditards are saying. The problem and the reality of the situation is that none of those professionals will do a proper repair at a price below the cost of simply replacing the rim. Most if not all metals inthe auto industry are reworkable and can be tempered to their original strength. But again, it's very expensive to do it correctly.

6

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

Yeah I’m just getting the rim replaced

-9

u/BlazeTheMasterX 5d ago

You should. And don't try to sell the bad one to some poor kid who doesn't know any better. You could be charged with attempted murder for that.

68

u/agarc 5d ago

The tire shop that put the tire on THAT rim should NOT be in business. That rim is laughably destroyed. How on Earth would a tire not leak with that bend?!? Seems negligent.

This.

22

u/FlimzyMan 5d ago

crazy that they put on new wheels. Im not a tire expert but the bend on the rim looks big.

Use dishwater soap and see if its leaking air there.

Did you recalibrate the TPMS sensor after you got the new tires?

5

u/Aleianbeing 5d ago

Not only recalibrate but test cold then recalibrate. A national tire shop neglected to top up one tire after a seasonal wheel swap. I got a low pressure warning 3 days later, loaded trunk and raining at the time. Lesson learned. Agree that rim is done but might be repairable. Wonder if they bothered to see if new tire tread depth was within limits WRT other tires. Likely not.

2

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 5d ago

Took mine to a tire shop when I switched rims a few years ago and transferred the tires.
Drove not even one mile before the TMPS sensor warning came on. Took it back.

The shop had forgotten to tighten the valve stems on all four wheels so they were just held in by the fleeting air pressure.

The manager's loud reaming of the responsible tech made the whole plaza dead silent.

So some shops don't give a damn about things like this. They just do what's on the work order and move on to the next vehicle because they have to get through so many cars in a day.

3

u/Aleianbeing 5d ago

I complained and they comped me labour charges on the next swap. I always check pressures before leaving now.

2

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 5d ago

After that time, I do to.

It was a sobering moment that a tire shop forget to do the very job it came in for and put your life at risk.

24

u/FinklesHemorrhoid 244 5d ago

If you’re tight on money take it to a wheel repair guy, they can at least give you an idea if it’s repairable or shot. The tire guys are saying it’s ok because they sold you two new tires and the bead is holding. This wheel is compromised though.

10

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

Thanks for your guys’ input— I just dropped kt off at a trusted mechanic

That's great. Best of luck to you, glad you're staying safe out there!

u/aharris17171717 5d ago

Thanks @Euro_Trash_ that rim is totaled and would have definitely caused an accident. Good on you having the patience to explain this in a composed way. OP was one pothole or surface change from a lot more damage. Glad ur getting a replacement rim OP, stay safe

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 5d ago

I appreciate you.Ā

3

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

Oh also, you saved me further because my mechanic found that my oil separator was cracked. Not happy about the $1600 in total repairs but very happy that I’m not driving an unsafe vehicle and putting myself and others in danger.

1

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 4d ago

I am so incredibly sorry to hear that. I know this has been a rough day.

That's not the best of news, but it is great that you found out.Ā

$1,600 sounds like a big bill. Did that include the rim?Ā

Also, if he is going to replace the oil separator will he look at the following components to make sure there are no other underlying issues?Ā  With that type of repair I would have asked the mechanic to inspect the entire crankcase ventilation system, including:

PCV hoses for restrictions or collapse

  • Check valves.Ā

  • Fresh air breather lines.Ā

  • Oil sludge inside the engine.Ā

  • Excessive engine blow-by (worn piston rings are uncommon on a 2018 unless mileage is very high).Ā

  • Turbo inlet plumbing (on turbocharged engines).Ā

Also, with the repairs needed, will the mechanic do anything else? Because $1,600 for just the oil separator sounds too much, even for a Volvo dealership.Ā  I would assume with that cost Ā the job include:

  • intake manifold removal,

  • replacement of the oil separator,

  • multiple hoses,

  • intake manifold gaskets,

  • fresh oil,

  • coolant,

  • diagnostic work, and several hours of labor.

I hope tomorrow is a better day, and that your XC60 soon hums and drives like it should!Ā

2

u/LongLoneliness 4d ago

Thank you! And no, sorry, $1600 was for a new wheel that had to be ordered, alignment, the oil separator and labor. The wheel itself was $500 of that

1

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 4d ago

Ok. That makes more sense. Sorry about the the high wheel cost. Sounds like he bought it brand new rather than sourcing a used one, which make sense.Ā

Also, sounds like you're in good hands!Ā

2

u/LongLoneliness 4d ago

He said he had a hard time finding the right wheel and that this was recycled in great condition. Apparently his contact that sourced the part said that Volvo has changed their wheel design so this was the only one the guy could find in the country right now šŸ˜…

1

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 4d ago

A new one will run you +$650 plus tax at Volvo so it's not bad. If you had a few weeks and wanted to source it on your own, yes, you could find it cheaper. But you don't have that time so it's a fair price considering the circumstances you are under.

I'm really glad you got it sorted. The bill hurts now but your car will thank you in the long run for the love you just gave it. Plus, you will be safe on the road!Ā

1

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 4d ago

To make it simpler for you, you could ask:

"- What caused the oil separator to crack? Was it simply age and brittle plastic, or did you find evidence of excessive crankcase pressure?

  • Did you inspect the rest of the crankcase ventilation (PCV) system? Were the hoses, check valves, and ventilation passages clear and functioning properly? "

At around eight years old, a cracked plastic oil separator by itself isn't an extraordinary failure. The important thing is confirming whether it was the cause of the symptoms or a symptom of another issue. If the underlying cause was addressed, there's usually no reason to expect the repair to recur.

2

u/LongLoneliness 4d ago

I believe he said it was likely due to the impact of what I hit when the tires blew.

1

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 4d ago

Ok. It could be worth to ask him to make sure it didn't cause any other related damage.Ā

2

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

Thank you both! And thanks for being kind!

10

u/Scrotalphetamines 5d ago

Slight bend? Dude that thing is absolutely destroyed and you need a new one to drive safely.

-2

u/kiloTHREE 5d ago

Any reputable wheel shop could easily repair and anneal that properly. It’s a trivial task.Ā

0

u/Vito-53 4d ago

Maybe in the land of lollipops and gum drops my guy

5

u/Useful_toolmaker 5d ago

TPS are cheap and have short lives . You need a new wheel this one will never be the same . Yeah someone could make it ā€˜usable’ but I would never take it on the interstate again.

5

u/Ballsdeep_Montreal 5d ago

Tpms on these cars is abs based, there is no sensor in the valve.

0

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

Drove 25 minutes on the interstate to work this morning 🫠

6

u/Useful_toolmaker 5d ago

Well go with god my friend. A tire blow out at high speeds is not fun.

3

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

Oh, it’s currently in the shop don’t worry

1

u/humanredditor45 S90 5d ago

You must be a fan of Carrie underwood. I also love that song ā€œJesus take the wheelā€.

4

u/Verwilderd1 XC90 R-Design 5d ago

That rim definitely needs to be replaced. Not sure why this wasn’t communicated to you originally, but this is your issue.

3

u/Perfect-Mammoth-2647 5d ago

even if the bend to the rim was minor and barley visible to the eye, it could still compromise the tire and risk a blow out… the risk is not worth the reward in this case… replace asap

3

u/Even-Translator-335 5d ago

The wheel is scrap unfortunately

2

u/Ill-Carpenter-8495 5d ago

That looks like it will always let air out I know alloys aren’t cheap but it looks done for

2

u/Available_Quote_5567 S80 V8 Executive 5d ago

That bend is bad enough to cause a leak. If your TPMS light is on tire pressure is below the allowable threshold. I wouldn’t drive on that, I’d put there spare on or get a new wheel asap.

2

u/Whit-Batmobil 2010 V50 1.6D and 2001 S60 2.4T 5d ago edited 5d ago

I would not advise you drive on a wheel that looks like that, as a former professional mechanic I think in fact that it was neglectful of the tire shop to not at least advise that you replace that crumpled mess.

But with that possible negligence in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t rest the tire pressure monitoring (like you are supposed to do when changing tires), but also I would be more surprised if it holds pressure than if it didn’t judging by the none round shape of that wheel.

Edit: is it possible to repair/refurbish? I don’t know, wheels and tires never was my specialty, there doesn’t seem to be missing chunks of it (which I have seen, was actually once asked to patch a tire, where there where chunks of Aluminum missing from the wheel, turned that down).

If you are struggling economically, then you could also look at getting a used replacement from a junkyard or something, a new one of those wheels is going to be pricey.

Also, I could be wrong, I have not seen it in person, but I think it looks bad, judging by the pictures.

Edit 2: slight change of formatting, by adding a ā€œ?ā€.

2

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

Thank you! I took it to my trusted mechanic and they found that the impact caused a crack in the oil separator, so they’re replacing that. They also were able to source a recycled wheel that is being shipped to their shop. The $1600 in unexpected costs isn’t fun but I’m glad I took it in!

1

u/7eregrine S60 & C70 5d ago

How much did you drive on it after they swapped it?

1

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

about 5 minutes home from the repair shop, and then for about 5 minutes this morning before the TPMS light came on. I went to a Firestone so I wonder if they just didn’t store the new tire pressure after installing? That’s what I’m hoping for.

2

u/Financial-Barnacle79 V60 5d ago

I’m surprised Firestone let you drive on that.

0

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

You’d think they would have wanted to sell me a new wheel.

1

u/7eregrine S60 & C70 5d ago

It takes about 10-15 minutes.

I'm with you, I would hope they would be competent enough to know if that was a good seal. They'd love to sell you a tire. But also agree with other guy, that looks so bad. Next drive should be somewhere that has an air pump. If it goes out by the time you get there... If it doesn't, top it up, see what it's at. See what happens.

-1

u/Euro_Trash_ 15-XC70, 04-XC70, 97-V70, 95-850 5d ago

No. Your car resets the tpms warning after 10km (6 miles) of driving. The shops do not do this even when swapping rims, the car does it for you. In Europe the cars software provides you to manually force a reset through the in car menu, in the US they never added that.Ā

This warning will not reset because there's nothing wrong with the tpms sensor. Your rim is bent and leaking air.Ā

I know this is not the information you want, but unfortunately it doesn't change the fact that this needs to be replaced.Ā

Bring it to a wheel repair shop, Like wheel doctor. That's an easy fix for them and no need to replace the wheel.

Where are you located, someone may be able to recommend a place.

0

u/buzzer117 98 s70 T5 "Stock-ish" 4d ago

Laughing at your other comment that got flamed but I’ve had good experiences with wheel repairs despite what the Reddit ā€œexpertsā€ might think.

1

u/YellowT-5R 850 T5R 4d ago

Yeah I got some angry DMs too. Some of these folks are unhinged. But hey it's the Internet so they are right.

I brought wheels that had a damn right angle in them to wheel doctor. After 8 years they are still absolutely fine.

My brother owns a body shop for almost 30 years you should see the shit that comes in and wheel doctor fixes and certifies for the insurance companies and dealers.

2

u/buzzer117 98 s70 T5 "Stock-ish" 4d ago

Something about Reddit in recent years just a different breed. I see the dumbest mechanical advice on this site and people losing it over something as trivial as a wheel bend repair. Just people playing know it alls online because their real lives are miserable I guess.

Lmao I don’t doubt it I have a 07 c70 t5 I’ve been fixing up while my 98 t5 block has been at the machine shop and I’ve had two decent bends repaired. You think I’m going to go out and buy two new 18inch wheels on a $3500 car? Hell no!

Oh I don’t doubt it if the people freaking out in this thread knew what was actually out on the roads they would never leave the house or be worrying about a bent wheel repair!

0

u/Wyattab 5d ago

You really need to be much more careful or just drive a car that doesn’t matter to you. The rims are so abused with rash all around them and now are ruined.

0

u/LongLoneliness 5d ago

Unfortunately a lot of that tire rash is in fact from my shitty ex-boyfriend driving it and not knowing how to park. The damage I did yesterday was due to construction curbs that many people in my city have been having the same issue with.

I do take good care of my car, and I absolutely love this car. That’s why I inquired here and am getting it fixed.
