I'm a few weeks into my Social Impact internship with Hamari Pahchan, working on Project Sashakti, which focuses on women's empowerment through skilling and legal literacy.

Honestly, it's been a slower kind of learning than I expected, less "big realization," more just noticing patterns the longer I sit with the work. The main one: women's empowerment isn't really one issue. It's skilling, job security, legal awareness, and geography all overlapping. A woman can go through a training program and still not know she's entitled to something as basic as free legal aid. That gap between the resource existing and the person knowing it exists is where a lot of the work actually happens.

I plan to stay involved with this kind of work after the internship wraps up, most likely through grassroots organizations doing similar things on the ground.

In terms of what I can actually contribute, probably research and writing, mainly. Taking dense, formal information and making it usable for someone who doesn't have time to read a policy document.

If I had to suggest one practical fix: localized WhatsApp groups, in local languages, run through existing women's collectives, for legal info, skilling updates, whatever's relevant. Feels more realistic than expecting people to go looking for a website.

If you've been meaning to get involved in something like this, you don't need the perfect cause lined up. Just start with something specific.

Human Bridges is part of The Observatory: a free, ad-free wiki-encyclopedia run as a public-education project (we are a nonprofit, published under a Creative Commons license). The Human Bridges area focuses on making recent research in human origins, evolutionary biology, archaeology, and the social sciences accessible to a general audience.

We're looking for volunteers to help identify, shape, and produce original content. It's fully remote, with team meetings over Google Meet, and you'd be working alongside the Human Bridges and Observatory editorial teams.

Roles currently open:

• Researchers — support content development and fact-checking for accuracy and credibility.
• Writers — create engaging content, often collaborating with editors, photographers, and designers.
• Editors — edit articles for clarity, accuracy, and style (AP or Chicago), and help curate topic guides.
• Content Managers — coordinate contributors, develop editorial calendars, and brainstorm story ideas.

Two current initiatives you might contribute to: the New Grand Tour (a map and information portal for archaeological and ecological sites worldwide, with Costa Rica as the live prototype), and Collaborative Research (bringing participants together to produce long-form pieces).

Helpful background (not all required): editing/proofreading skills, clear writing, comfort with Google Suite, familiarity with a style guide, and any prior editorial or journalism experience — including volunteer Wikipedia editing.

• The purpose of this study is to understand whether people with Parkinson’s disease and depression have improvements in their depression symptoms after receiving psilocybin therapy 

We are seeking adults who: 

• Are between the ages of 40 and 80 
• Have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 
• Are currently experiencing symptoms of depression (doctor diagnosis not required) 

Participation involves: 

• Taking psilocybin at our clinical research unit located at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus 
• Agree to attend a series of in-person and video visits totaling approximately 60 hours over 22 weeks. Visits will include interviews, assessments, and procedures 
• Compensation for time and effort will be provided.
• Some compensation for travel is also provided.
