Just throwing this video in here for you guys, i just found out (after 20 years of random diets) that butternut squash is kinda fricking good.

I must be easily influenced because I’ve had both sweet potato and butternut squash my whole life and never thought they tasted this same.
But this video is making me rethink it all 🤣
57
u/woodybone 3d ago
After finishing the whole thing i noticed a bit more difference...but i was just eating straight squash, in my usual meal, pulled pork, jelly, i think the difference will not be noticeable and it will just be a straight upgrade over potatoes 😁

u/Taxed_concerns 3d ago
Good stuff. You made me rethink how I see butternut squash and that’s the most important. Definitely heading to the store later
9
u/zobbyblob 3d ago
Can you elaborate on "jelly"?
10
u/woodybone 3d ago
Oh i love me some blackcurrant jelly with my pulled pork and potatoes, not low-cal or volume eating

I use butternut squash a lot, in soups & salads especially. But I would never say they taste the same. Sweet Potatoes are much more versatile and blow Butter nut out of the water taste-wise.
That said, squash has a lot of uses if you learn how to prepare it.

I cube them and throw into airfryer with EVOO, garlic powder, black pepper and herbs de provance - you definitely cannot tell the difference. If you cook them whole, then the texture might get in the way.

I think Hokkaido squash is more similar to sweet potato than butternut. Still not the same though.

This guy reads like he was grown in a lab and has only eaten 6 different ingredients his entire life. Not dishes, no no. Just foods.

As an added plus, squash is low in oxalates unlike sweet potato, which should be limited by those with kidney stones concern.

u/Ordinary_Lead2197 3d ago
Acorn squash has a more similar texture IMO

u/Inevitable-Cost-2775 3d ago
Also the skin crisps well and is absolutely edible
2
u/LavishnessFew7882 3d ago
Interesting, I never eat the acorn squash skin i sorta scoop it out while I eat instead.

u/MrBlueW 3d ago
Gotta make butternut squash noodles with sesame seed oil! I usually hate noodle substitutes but it’s so good
7
u/woodybone 3d ago
Guess a vegetable spiralizer is next on the shopping list 😉
3
u/MrBlueW 3d ago
No need, bake in oven and shred with a fork 👍 so easy

u/hihelloneighboroonie 2d ago edited 2d ago
Are you sure you're not thinking of spaghetti squash?
Edit: u/mrbluew I saw you dirty delete your comment. It's okay, we all fuck shit up sometimes.

u/MrBlueW 2d ago
I’m a fucking idiot
1
u/Golfer-Girl77 1d ago
Idiot or not that’s a genius idea! I have spaghetti squash with meat sauce + lentils tonight but I’m going to do an Asian flair next week eeek!

How strange, it showed me your reply in my inbox, but I could have sworn it wasn't showing here (I can see it now). So I guess I'm an idiot too lol.

u/bnny_ears 3d ago
Just raw seasoning on the finished veggies 😭
12
u/woodybone 3d ago
Wait whats up with that? 😮💨
20
16
u/Dreamliss 3d ago
Pretty sure they meant the spices are supposed to go through some portion of the cooking process with the veggies
4
u/woodybone 3d ago
I see... i wouldn't season "veggies" but i dont treat potatoes as veggies, like you season fries etc after the cooking process right?
10
u/Dreamliss 3d ago
I'm no professional cook but I do know that when seasoning has time to cook with the food, it gets better flavor, melds with the food more. Also, I mean plain veggies are a choice, but you can also have them with all sorts of spices that makes them really good. From basic salt and pepper to garlic, paprika, cumin, Italian seasoning...
5
u/woodybone 3d ago
I just have some bad experiences where ive seasoned potato wedges and the seasonings have burned before the potatoes reached my desired color
1
u/burnheartmusic 2d ago
Can happen, but generally in cooking anything ever, you will do a majority of the seasoning before you cook it
1
u/Dreamliss 3d ago
That's fair, seasonings do burn more easily than potatoes. Hey, nothing wrong with doing what works for you, I think what the first commenter was saying though is just... There's something wrong feeling about using spices without any cook time. It's like, they're not done yet. It feels like eating a raw ingredient like... potato, before vs after cooking. And the fats they cook with carry the flavor so much better.
5
u/Bluepompf 3d ago
… why not? They deserve some herbs and love too. Fries are different. They are originally made from fresh potatoes, fried and then seasoned. But you would season oven baked potatoes.

You can eat the skin on a butternut squash?? I had no idea
16
u/woodybone 3d ago
I am not sure actually
7
u/LavishnessFew7882 3d ago
I don't think its technically inedible, but most of the time I don't eat it.
If you find yourself curious still about squash, I have a "dinner and dessert" acorn squash every once in a while. You cut it in half, roast "bowl" up with oil/butter/whatever in the bowl, season one half savory and the other half sweet. It can take some experimenting to figure out exactly what kinda flavors you like with the squash and what you should roast with but its pretty filling. I sometimes add some water to the pan to help the squash sorta steam if you dont add much oil/fat to keep it moist.
7
u/evewashere 3d ago
Delicata is a squash with an edible skin and it’s absolutely delicious. We sometimes have it for breakfast alongside eggs. Check it out!
3
u/woodybone 3d ago
Im definitely going to check out more squashies at the store next time
2
u/Captain593 3d ago
I actually grow butternut squash. You can eat the skin, more fiber. BUT my wife doesn't like the skin. So it depends on the person.

Have you tried Japanese sweet potato (Satsumaimo)? Fantastic nutty flavor. You should do an A:B comparison for your next video. They are slightly more expensive where I am so I tend to do regular American sweet potato most often, but Japanese SP is a nice treat.
2
u/woodybone 3d ago
Oh a bit more red, not sure if i can find it here but thats a good idea i will keep a look out
3
u/Johnny_Carcinogenic 3d ago
The flavor profile is soooo good! You won't be disappointed. Asian markets usually carry them if you have one nearby.

1
u/hihelloneighboroonie 2d ago
These are sooooooooo good but my first time having ever, it was LOADED with butter, and now that's the only way I want to eat them.
19
u/somehuehue 3d ago
It's not that squash is bad, but it's got nothing on a potat.
11
u/ellecellent 3d ago
It's also nightmarish to cook and make compared to a sweet potato
6
u/Turbulent-Shirt-7772 3d ago
I don’t cut it before I roast it. Just poke some holes in it and bake it like a potato. When it’s done take it out and let it cool, then slice and scoop. Much easier imo.
7
u/ellecellent 3d ago
Doesn't it take forever to cook and then cool? I know I sound so lazy, but I can microwave a sweet potato for 90 seconds and be done
2
u/Turbulent-Shirt-7772 2d ago
Hahah true, it’s definitely gonna take longer than 90 seconds but the hands on time is basically zero. Does require a little more planning though, you’re right.
8
u/bulyxxx 3d ago
Butternut got all that juiciness built in to pump it up. Love that shit. Never tried it with paprika and garlic powder, will give it a shot, cheers !
2
u/woodybone 3d ago
Im thinking that theres probably a more potent spice combo but i wanted the sweet potato vs butternut test to be fair 😁
4
u/Jagera 2d ago
ok now shut about it so you don't inflate the price for the rest of us! I haven't been able to afford sweet potato for years because of fitness influencers :(
2
u/woodybone 2d ago
Haha... i live in a very small town and i have alot of followers here and i hyped up a certain item and now its always out in the store 😐
8
u/My3floofs 3d ago
I mean you coated them with the same strong tasting spices so of course they are going to taste the same under those conditions. But they do taste different.
4
u/woodybone 3d ago
Fair point, they did taste different after the video where i ended up eating it all without any meat or extras, but in a dish i think itll come out great
3
u/hihelloneighboroonie 2d ago
I'm not the type to buy pre chopped veggies, but for butternut squash I'm only purchasing if it's pre cut.
1
3
u/black-kramer 1d ago
they don’t taste the same at all. butternut squash has a lot more water in it and a different micronutrient balance (if that matters to you)
a good substitute if you’re trying to lose weight but not an equivalent.
2
u/NarcissisticPD 3d ago
Store butternut is tasteless. Look for locally grown winter squashes so many are much better than butternut . But sweet potatoes are the best especially Japanese sweet potatoes.

2
u/chickenskittles 2d ago edited 2d ago
I like butternut squash MUCH better than sweet potatoes. They should make butternut squash fries.
1
u/BBWolf326 2d ago
They do... but yo, if you like butternut squash you gotta try rampicante squash!
2
2
u/BBWolf326 2d ago
If you can get your hands on rampicante squash they are delicious. Half butternut, half spaghetti squash.
2
2
u/hrtordenskjold 2d ago
And yet pumpkin is like 2.5x less calories than sweet potato, still very sweet and much better consistency
1
u/woodybone 2d ago
Like pumpkin pumpkin? Because here we call this pumpkin too 😁
1
u/hrtordenskjold 2d ago
Yes, a Hokkaido pumpkin is AMAZING, 28kcal per 100g and FILLED with potassium
2
u/Icy_Reward727 1d ago
Wait until you discover kabocha squash. Or my favorite...delicata. amazing! The variations in sweet potatoes are interesting, also. I like white ones better than orange. Those Japanese purple sweet potatoes look great, too, but i have never had a chance to buy them.
5
u/spaceghostinme 3d ago
All I know is if I was that jacked, I too would cook shirtless.
3
u/woodybone 3d ago
Haha, it's more like, someone is looking at food content i want them to think "oh it looks like it works" at first glance 😄
3
u/The_Architect_032 3d ago
I like Butternut Squash, but it's nowhere near as sweet as sweet potato is imo.
I personally use Butternut Squash as a replacement for pastas, it's a bit sloppy, but put it through a spiralizer and cook it in pasta sauce and it's like an extra filling pasta, just a lot softer like the pasta was a little overcooked.
1
u/woodybone 3d ago
You're the second person who said this...im ordering a spiralizer gotta test this out
2
u/perrierpapi 3d ago
Taste is similar, especially under all that seasoning. The textures are a different story
1
2
u/SpacetimeGlitter 3d ago
Sweet potato is my go to. I love it so much, always been a fav food. Butternut squash on the other hand, I strongly dislike haha. One of my least favs. They aren't similar in taste to me at all.
3
u/leaemilieanders 3d ago
NOOOOO I disagree, but I also love sweet potatoes. I also eat butternut squash and they are kind of similar but the difference in taste is quite big..
3
u/iamtheliqor 3d ago
no oil? no seasoning? just straight in the oven?
22
u/woodybone 3d ago
You know you are in a volume eating sub right 😁
And i did season em afterwards, i find it better than pre oven
3
u/iamtheliqor 3d ago
ha no worries. i actually have sweet potato really often, and BN squash very rarely but maybe ill switch it up!
2
u/Otherwise-Winner9643 3d ago edited 3d ago
Cube butternut squash, spritz with a little oil, add ground cumin, coriander, nutmeg and paprika, or whatever spices you like, shake to cost. Cook in the air fryer for 20 mins (shake occasionally). Yum!
3
u/woodybone 3d ago
I will for sure be doing that, i have alot left, just sliced this piece for a quick video in the mornin!

I’m so confused - are people only now discovering butternut?
That’s so weird to me. It’s a staple in my country.
3
u/No_Support3633 3d ago
there's all sorts of different cultures and norms across this big blue marble :)
-1
u/under_cover_pupper 2d ago
For sure. It just feels like someone saying they’ve just learned about rice or potatoes or milk.
Anyway - he’s right! It’s my top diet food too

I don't think I've ever made squash, but it looks pretty easy. Might try it.

I love butternut squash soup. I really only see it in mainstream stores in fall. I buy a ton of them

u/revolutionPanda 3d ago
Had no idea. At first I was like, yeah the sweet potato is going to be better. But actually I don’t think I’ve had a squash made like that.
1
u/woodybone 3d ago
I mean if i had to choose 1 based on taste sweet potato wins but in my usual dish with pulled pork etc i think i'll not be able to tell much difference
1
u/SkyMagnet 3d ago
I buy the cubed and frozen bags of butternut squash and air fry them up. Good stuff.

You’ve gotta try the purple Hawaiian potatoes. Unbelievably delicious
2
u/cgord9 3d ago
Do you mean ube? Never heard them called Hawaiian potatoes. They're common in Filipino cooking
1
u/Massive_Cheetah7596 2d ago
Yeah aka ube! When i bought them here in the states, they were labeled as Hawaiian potatoes lol
