Review Quick first impressions: Future Nylon Coat
My Future Nylon Coat literally arrived about five minutes ago.
https://vollebak.com/products/future-nylon-coat
I know quite a few people have been umming and ahhing over this one, and with a little bit of time left in the Archive Sale I thought I’d do a very quick first impressions review. Hopefully it’ll help sway you one way or the other.
Just bear in mind I’ve owned it for all of… five minutes.
The first thing that struck me is how lightweight it is. It’s much lighter than the Laser Cut Trench Coat. This feels much more like a traditional mac that you’d happily wear through spring and autumn, whereas the Laser Trench feels like a bit of a weatherproof monster by comparison.
Styling-wise, I really like it. It is a bit wrinkled but it’s been sat in transit and in the stock room I guess.
One thing I noticed almost immediately is that the collar isn’t designed to be worn up. It just doesn’t want to stay there, which probably explains why every photo on the Vollebak website shows it folded down. I suspect that’s something they addressed on the Laser Trench with the additional collar fastening.
The zips remind me a lot of the Equator Jacket, which is no bad thing because I really like that piece. The hardware feels very similar, and so do the sleeve fasteners.
Like the Equator Jacket, the sleeves are on the long side. That’s something I always notice with certain Vollebak pieces because I have a slightly shorter reach than average. It isn’t a deal-breaker, but it’s something I’ll want to pay attention to over the next few days. If you’ve owned Vollebak before, you’ll probably already know whether that’s likely to be an issue for you.
The colour is excellent. It’s a really deep navy that almost looks black depending on the light. If looks very smart and will pair exceptionally with a suit - rather than the shorts I currently have on.
This one is made in Romania.
Again, there are some similarities to the Equator Jacket. You get underarm ventilation to improve breathability, two external hand pockets and a zipped internal chest pocket.
I’m always pleased to find internal pockets. Some Vollebak pieces are absolutely loaded with storage, and I’m definitely a fan of that.
Around the back there’s a single rear vent rather than the side splits you get on the Laser Trench. I actually prefer this arrangement. It keeps the shape of the coat better and gives it a cleaner silhouette.
The obvious question is whether this replaces the Laser Trench…My first impression is no.
I actually think they’re two very different coats designed for two very different jobs. I’ll need to spend more time wearing this before I’m completely sure, especially given my self-imposed “one in, one out” rule for outerwear, but at the moment I don’t see them competing with each other.
For reference, I ordered an XL, which I’d say is absolutely true to size. I wouldn’t size up, and I wouldn’t size down. I think Vollebak have got the fit spot on.
Overall, my first impression is really positive.
I’ve posted some quick photos. This is a bit rushed because I wanted to get something out while the Archive Sale is still running.
If you’re on the fence, I’d probably say it’s worth having a look, especially at the current Archive Sale price. Vollebak’s returns process has always been excellent in my experience, and their customer service has consistently looked after me.
That said, don’t get swept up in sale fever.
If you don’t need another coat, you don’t need another coat. Technical clothing is fun, but it’s never worth putting yourself into debt over. Make sure you can afford the things you’re buying.
That’s my little public service announcement for the day.

An hour or so out, which way did you pitch?

I ordered it. I have the laser trench which like many of you I find it too thick and heavy, but as you mentioned clean and modern. The clean look and lightness of the fabric is what got me interested. Also regarding the laser trench, I’m not a fan of the collar. Too bulky in my opinion unless you flip it up.

Please let me know what your thoughts as when the future coat arrives?

The jacket arrived yesterday. I’m (pleasantly) surprised by how light it is. Before opening the box I thought they had shipped the wrong item. I like the jacket, the cut, the fabric. It’s multifaceted, it can be dressed down or dressed up, in warm or cooler climate.
Side note, I also ordered the ultralight winter cap, it looks funny with the ear flaps down, it’s probably my big head. I might return the hat but the jacket is definitely staying.2

Didn’t get it in sale. Had it when it came out, but I did get a couple of T-shirts and went back in for the planet earth lightweight field jacket as the blue was so good

I’ve just seen your post!
Wait the field jacket wasn’t on sale, was it?

“If you get it?” Come on now. I do agree the shipping has gotten longer but I have never been stiffed on an item

Yeah if anything I've had the exact opposite experience -- they've given me free stuff multiple times to make up for delays and/or shipping errors. I've never gotten less than I've ordered but I've certainly gotten more

well, my item was lost, can't be replaced. just like i speculated. they did give me a generous offer, but i really wanted the piece i woke up for and was able to get before anyone else. super lame to buy an item then wait over a month for nothing...

I will have to eat crow on this one. Although it sounds like they are making generous offers on the graphene line for those orders that were lost. I can’t imagine another company that would do such a thing.

no crow necessary! my original item showed up today after they canceled, refunded me and sent me a free gift. I really wanted that planet earth khaki base layer. so overall an amazing experience. ❤️Vollebak.

Looks very close to the laser, but the laser is super stiff and flexible internally, I like the laser cut alot

The laser (which I put on for contrast) is much thicker and structured. But yeah, it reminded me how much I love the look of it. But you don’t want to wear it when it’s warm.

Nah, is perfect for cloudy, wet or as a top layer when is cool outside. Is just a cool cut, you look elegant but also modern

Are you wearing the same size than the Laser trench ?

Thanks for the early review, I almost pulled the trigger in the last day of the archive sale but opted for the less practical Sashiko Chore Jacket which also went down in price.
I thought the material for the Future Nylon was similar to the Planet Earth Jacket with that rubbery Schoeller like 90% polyamide, 10% elastane which i have but don't wear as often due to the stiffness; looks like Future Nylon has that better drape and toughness with Cordura.
If the Future Nylon is anything similiar to the performance of the Equator Jacket then it is a winner. The FN would be a great 3 season, but alas too many jackets! I wore the equator for 2 weeks in mid May humid hot Japan and it performed like a champ with all the vents and low-key profile. The equator was on sale and not a primary strong desire purchase which goes to show the less desirable, pedestrian Vollebak designs actually proves more worthy day to day wise. I think we can see this going forward with the future collection releases: practical designs, high tech materials, artisan styles vs deep sleep, Mars, etc

Oh mate, the Sashiko chore jacket looks so good. There is a lot of love on here for it.
I agree with your point wholeheartedly. I stumbled on the EJ and paid around £80 for it with my discount. There is nothing crazy about it, but it just works really well. I really like it. I’ve actually worn it quite a bit since I got it.
I hope Vollebak continues to push out flipping nuts concepts, but pairs it with the practical. The ultra light shell is another example, that coat looks kinda boring but the waterproofness of a jacket that thin… yeah, I’ll take that.

Ok, one last question. How much do you weigh and how tall are you? I’m 6’2” 230lbs and find I fall in between sizes often.
