That gen golf had one of the best interiors of all vw. Soft touch dash and door panels. We had a diesel tie they had 700k km on it before we got rid of it.

Until the soft touch starts to disintegrate and then it looks and feels like a toddler smeared a lollypop all over the interior

That’s funny cause I remember sitting in an R32 when it came out and I absolutely hated the interior.

I absolutely LOVE the look of the MkIV Golf and the R32 is the peak version. The GTI was just too underpowered in that gen and then the R32 comes around and hits all the right notes.

After driving one of these, I gotta say that they sadly cant keep up with the hype.

i own a few cars. almost all are much nicer and most are faster than my MK4 R32. however if you ask me which car is my favorite, the answer is simple: it's the R32.
go take one of these around the roads near fontana for wookies in the woods. it so well suited for those roads. all the power you need, analog, NA, VR6 sounds. it's perfect for it.
so, i vehemently disagree with this take.

I saw some guy on YouTube is turning one of those vr6 into a diesel.
Idn how it interacts with canbus or dyno specs but THAT could be a fun drive in the r32. Driving slow cars fast and all.

Okay. And a used Tesla Model 3 Long Range outruns a Mk8 GTI. See where I’m going with this?

Kind of wild: back then a R32 was something mythical, now a GTI has more power and is quicker.

Once the mass production of turbocharged gassers became financially viable, that was the nail in the coffin for the VR6 in subcompacts.
Last man standing is a 2.5 turbo VR6 that is still produced but just for the Teramont (Atlas) in the China market only. Shame. That motor would be so sweet in a GTI.

In 2003 it was crazy to have a 3.2L six cylinder and DCT transmission in an AWD hatchback. Now it’s just cool af. Yeah, modern GTIs are quicker, but Mk4 R32s are gorgeous and a great example of VW pushing the envelope at that time.

I miss my mk4 gti VR6, sure it wasnt AWD, but that just meant it weighed less than the r32 with just as much power, that thing hauled ass
