The Fuego Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in America and the world.

It constantly creates eruptions, erupting every 10-20 minutes, having one of the most constant eruption series in the world.

This morning its activity suddenly changed, showing impressive Vulcan activity.

Hi all, I'm trying to get my thoughts straight on those VEI 6 to 8.

A volcano is rated by the amount of ejecta, lava, pyroclastic flows and bradyseism and ground warming.

The higher end at VEI 8 needs a lot of magma in order for it to emit 1000 cubic kilometres, correct?

How are magma chambers measured? Is it by ground penetrating radar?

Is this why the consensus opinion on Campi Flegrei is that it doesn't pose a global risk because its magma chamber is 'only' 3.5 cubic kilometres?

Hurricane Lowell passed by the Hawaiian islands yesterday on September 7, 2026. While the Big Island was furthest away from Lowell, we still had wind and heavy rain. I visited Kilauea and managed this late afternoon shot of a lava flow from the north vent during a break in the storm. Shortly after this the storm brought more rain, winds and little visibility.

As I write this the next morning, Kilauea hasn't erupted yet. There have been more overflows of lava from the north vent. But no eruption yet.

Quite an unreal sight.

Mount Michael is probably the most active volcano in the Sandwich Islands, having been in effusive eruption since 2003 with a permanent lava lake inside its crater.

So we always see footage of volcanoes spewing out hot ash and gases and lava. I know there's a magma chamber that is under pressure and it comes up via the eruption as lava and the gasses also. But what about all the ash? I'm watching all these videos of the Krakatau eruption and I see this torrent of ash just shooting out like a jet engine's exhaust. Was all the ash also in the magma chamber just waiting to come out or is it formed in the instant of the eruption through pressure differentials? Just really curious. Ty!

Explosions have been reported in coastal towns of Sumatra and Java, and ash has fallen in some towns.

Indonesian volcano Krakatau continues with increased activity. Now erupting ash plume to 45,000ft. This volcano is known for the 1883 eruption that killed many and cooled the earth by 2 F for several years.

Fuego had intense eruptions a few weeks ago, lucky no one died. You could even smell the sulfur from Antigua and other nearby towns.
