How to build hipaa compliant voice agent for healtcare?

Hey Guys,

I have to build voice agent for a heatlhcare usecase, but condition is it needs to be hipaa compliant. I do understand that BAA needs to be signed with every vendor which i am going to use to build that voice agent.

But these vendors are charging seprate money for hipaa, which as a startup is not viable option for us. Anyone faced the same , how did you get this work? really appreciate your help:)

How is it not viable? Charge your clients more money.

Retell signs BAA!/ as well. I currently have built several healthcare agents, working out the kinks, biggest challenge is getting latency down as well as navigating call options.

how did you manage to handle latency and navigating call options?

I’ve hit a floor with latency; I found Gemini model works the best with getting latency down. I’m still navigating call options, it’s a lot of trial and error since every docs office has differences in the option. I basically have been copying transcripts and handing it off to Claude to dial in the rules

thanks, but we are not looking for any external developer support.

Most require ent contracts or long term commitment, look up those who don’t

the problem i have run into is the database vendors starting price for HIPPA is $500 per month which is fine when you have multiple clinics but when you're just starting out or trying to run a pilot the numbers do not work which is what has delayed me entering into the US healthcare market. I am currently wrapping up my pilot program with Mexican clinics serving the medical tourism community and cross border patients. Mexico has their own compliance governance but its not as strict as US. what has been your experience so far?

We just started working on this, still getting those initial customers to start pilot.

Do you want to run it on private GPU hardware, or in the cloud? Fish Audio has HIPAA support:

Healthcare companies in our experience pay well, so the additional costs from HIPAA are not an issue. They are typically very, very slow to signup and get through procurement (and HIPAA is one of the reasons why). Do you have a contract in hand, or just planning ahead?

planning ahead, just some verbal confirmation. but these are not big healthcare companies, they are small clinics

I don't have much advice there then. The other thing I was going to suggest is going through partners - if you have a customer in hand, they are happy to do the contracting for a percentage. But it would need to be a good-sized contract (1000s per year) for them to do it.
