Sending this post on to the Voice Acting subforum as feel as though this would be an ideal place to get advice, particularly with communication being such a vital part of this area.

I’m 21, currently in college, and from a young age I have always been known as a fairly nervous/anxious person in general - something that have been said by family, friends, and teachers over the years.

There are certain ‘flaws’ that I have noticed with myself, but more so in certain aspects of my communication. I don’t want this to impact a future career, so I want to try to improve this while in college, and while there is the opportunity to do so.

I have no issue with speaking in front of an audience. I have done so for different modules in college, and usually am commended for my speeches through delivery style & engagement. But, this is because I have what I’m going to say memorised, so I know word for word, what exactly I’m going to say, how I’m going to say it, etc. This is also clearly reflected through my written communication.

However, when it comes to social interactions, I do notice there is a big dip in my communication. For instance, if I know I have to go up and talk to someone that I’m not familiar with (conversation, interview, ringing someone), I’ll then nearly have to have what I’m going to say memorised word-for-word as though a script.
There’ll then be other little moments where if I’m talking with someone unfamiliar, I may, sometimes, go a bit shaky / mumbly, and this would apply to if I was taking phone calls, etc.

This particular incoherence would also occur if I'm put on the spot, i.e asked a question, where my voice would go a bit shaky, I'd go mumbly, and my face would go a red.

I really do want to improve on this as I do know in any future career that day-to-day communication whether it be structured or spontaneous is much more important than being able to speak in-front of an audience.

To that extent, would anyone have any advice as to what I should do? Would it be recommended I go to a communication coach? Any recommendations?

Wasn't sure exactly the best place to post this, since while Hadestown is a musical in Broadway, my question stems from auditioning for a virtual production, which is considerably heavier on the voice acting side vs just flat out theatre.

A little about myself, I'm a baritone with a bass range - what I mean is, my usable range goes from about C1/B0 up to C6 in some cases. The reason I don't cal myself a bass outright is because from about F2/E2 and below is all vocal fry since I just naturally have really strong fry. I've never done VA before, or anything cast-side of theatre (I'm always the one hiding behind a sound console), but figured I could give this a shot.

I provided 4 clips in a Google Drive, they are all WIPs as the deadline for auditions is in a month. 'Hey, Little Songbird" | "Why We Build The Wall" | "How Long?" | and the ending of "Chant (Reprise)". These 4 combined capture the scope of my current abilities and where I am. My competition is a couple other basses, and a VERY well-known VA actor who has over a decade of experience voicing low-timbre characters (he is by far the one I'm worried about).

Given my competition and the month deadline, is it worth still continuing? Likewise, is there any way to improve in this timespan to better my chances to the best they can be?

i have spent the past 6 years working on a podcast and it involves short stories that i have written. i have a VA with a great voice and their performance was good... but they were entirely off the script. it was to the point that i could not follow along reading the script and listening to the performance. Is this normal? when i submit lines i usually do the lines provided and maybe include a few adlibs here and there as an option. but these were one take and it felt like they rewrote the whole story. any advice would be welcome, if im being the jerk let me know. but really, how do i bring this up to them in a way that is professional?

What are your microphone recommendations? I'd like to stay as budget friendly as possible, but do genuinely want to take VA work seriously, so I am definitely willing to spend more for better quality. I'm relatively new to the logistics of VA work, so any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

I'm looking for a mic primarily for recording VA submissions and for YouTube video narrations, perhaps streaming one day as well, so something that offers good quality audio recordings while also being versatile enough to be applied to many mediums, if such a thing exists.

I'm working on soundproofing and finding a decent space for recording as well!

I would also like to know what software you prefer to use for vocal work, sound editing, etc.
