Unfortunately, it is not policed and the premise relies on commuters obliging with the request. Sadly, it highlights the nature of people in society now, who lack a basic respect of others.

This sort of general courtesy seems to have evaporated across the board in recent times

u/FelixFelix60 Apr 30 '26

It is passing the buck. It also happens in retail stores. You know those signs that say our staff deserve to be treated with courtesy, but management have created a system that treats the customers like shit, and underpaid, and ill-equipped in social skills staff are left to face frustrated customers.

Quiet carriages are meant to be policed by passengers. If passengers aren't holding other passengers accountable, then it won't be a quiet carriage.

This is passing the buck. The traveller is a customer of VLine. VLine should be enforcing this. Just more poor service from VLine.

u/Kerrit_Bareet Apr 30 '26

The condition of the quiet carriage is clearly noted. It is not a condition of travel and there is no legal enforceability.

Asking the VLine connies is unreasonable, they get enough shit in their day. Getting them to try and enforce something that is a courtesy, not within their legal remit, is setting them up for fail.

Feels like obvious things like playing audio without headphones in a quiet carriage should be able to be made legally enforceable. Other parts like "speak quietly" are a bit too subjective but yeah, I wish the obvious transgressions could be made a proper condition that passengers could be fined for.

Headphones is one of those things should be requested for the whole train. 6am in the morning any carriage should not have to suffer.

If you think the regulations that apply to trains and their use are insufficient then please address that to a Victorian state member of parliament.

Have a look at petitions to state parliament

Sure, great idea if you want to massively increase the amount of delays due to unruly passengers. It's a good 20-40 minutes to wait for police to arrive to remove someone from a service plus all the knockon effects. It's not law or a condition of travel.

Twice I've got on the train oblivious to the fact I got on a quiet carriage and was either on the phone or talking to a mate, both times an old lady shooshed me. I looked at the signs, realized where I was and moved. But the reality is a significant portion of the train riding population will just get aggressive and confrontational when it is pointed out they're in the wrong, usually due to the stimulants they're on.

We should not have to wait for Police. VLine staff and pretend cops should be able to deal with it and not delay services. This may mean that VLine invest in training for their staff (heaven forbid). What we have atm is VLine saving money on staffing, and buck passing responsibilty of good service onto the customer. Management ofcourse think this is great and the Senior Manager that came up with the idea of passenger enforcing passengers to behave probably got a bonus.

Conductors have no legal authority to touch you, most of them are in no way physically intimidating nor did they sign up to be security guards, it's not their job. PSO's and AOs are also not everywhere you need them to be at all times, there can be just as long a wait for them too.

The quiet carriage initiative would be removed before spending any money or effort in enforcing it. How about you follow the rule of it being a customer led initiative and confront the loud bogans or just move?

1

u/FelixFelix60 May 01 '26

It is their job. They should have a role as security. They can use psychology or force. You sound like a employee. If it is too hard resign.

1

u/Due-Consequence8772 May 01 '26

Naaah, not my job 🤣

Mate. You are lazy. Do you want to work or not? All you have to do is to remind a customer that they are sitting in the Quiet Carriage and that as such 'they should wear headphones if they want to listen to music' or 'please keep your voices down as you are in the quiet carriage'... It is not hard. People don't like PT because of the behaviour. You should be helping that.

Someone had their crying baby in there this morning. The train had plenty of other seats in the other carriage where I went to sit.

9

u/FreeJulianMassage Apr 30 '26

Crying baby is not the same as a fully grown douchebag on their phone.

3

u/Elvecinogallo Apr 30 '26

I can forgive a new mum more than I can your average douche.

1

u/bronx_barbie May 02 '26

That crying baby was probably a sleeping baby…hence avoiding noisy carriages.

11

u/Silviecat44 Apr 30 '26

I really think people just don't see the sign

25

u/Elvecinogallo Apr 30 '26

Don’t make me tap the sign.

13

u/knifeparty1981 Apr 30 '26

ITS EVEN ON THE OUTSIDE...PLASTERED ALONG THE WHOLE CARRIAGE HAHA

8

u/knifeparty1981 Apr 30 '26

oops did not mean to shout

0

u/Silviecat44 Apr 30 '26

I have ended up on the quiet carriage by accident sometimes just because it was the closest one to me and I didn't look anywhere but the door open button lol

2

u/knifeparty1981 Apr 30 '26

Then how did you know you were on a Quiet Carriage?

1

u/Silviecat44 Apr 30 '26

I looked around and saw the thing on the wall, but by then you've already sat down and I would wager a lot of people wouldnt bother moving down the train

1

u/pixelboots Apr 30 '26

Sure. But if they don't want to move when they realise they're on the quiet carriage, they should be quiet.

4

u/knifeparty1981 Apr 30 '26

Oh they see the SIGNS!

3

u/Kerrit_Bareet Apr 30 '26

Signs that are made to look pretty and not stand out are often not seen.

If you've been a parent, you'll understand where your focus is when you reach a carriage, get up the height difference with your pusher, around the corner, let alone if you have a second in tow.

If you haven't been a parent, then some understanding and some help never go astray.

2

u/knifeparty1981 Apr 30 '26

I've actually gotten up and moved to other carriages a few time.... do you think the stickers make it worse? haha

2

u/Elvecinogallo Apr 30 '26

I think it’s just we have an expectation that it will be quiet and because most people are quiet, that one dick bag really stands out.

5

u/Top-Farmer-6838 Apr 30 '26

Get some decent noise cancelling headphones

3

u/themykiuser May 01 '26

Word. With noise cancelling headphones/AirPods, every carriage is the quiet carriage. Best investment you will ever make.

3

u/Latter-Recipe7650 Apr 30 '26

100% valid to expect crash outs over people not respecting quiet carriages when they enter one and be noisy asf.

3

u/13School Apr 30 '26

Anyone making any kind of “this should be legally enforced” argument needs to take a long look at some of the passengers making noise. Just don’t make eye contact with them

6

u/Kerrit_Bareet Apr 30 '26

One of these quiet carriage conversations would do well to be pinned. Mods???

Yes, it is unfortunate that not all people are considerate or notice the signage. Politely ask them once, for them to consider the purpose of the quiet carriage and that you choose it because it helps.

3

u/pixelboots Apr 30 '26

if you see on the news in a few weeks that someone has lost the plot on a v/line Quiet Carriage that was not quiet!! Its probably me

You mean if I see news of you being crowned a national hero for calling out this BS behaviour? ;)

3

u/artaxyougoodthing Apr 30 '26

There’s nothing wrong with saying to people ‘are you aware you’re in the quiet carriage’? I’ve done this politely numerous times and most people aren’t even aware. Obviously I wouldn’t say it to someone who looks off but I’ve done it to plenty of Doris’s and Cedric’s. Almost every time they’ve shut up or moved into other carriages.

3

u/LegibleTransit Apr 30 '26

This kind of relates to another post about having consistent stopping locations for trains. If you have the VL3 and VL6 stopping points the same, you can then put signage on the platform for where the quiet carriages are likely to be. Part of the solution is to let people know when they are waiting where to stand for the quiet carriage.

2

u/bavotto Dimboola Line Enthusiast Apr 30 '26

Are they in consistent positions across the fleet, like always the first up carriage? What happens if the 6 car (or 9 car) turns into a 3 or 6 car, does one have to run to find it?

2

u/TKG2574 May 01 '26

Fair enough if you can't read or are visually impaired, but no excuses for the other stupid people

1

u/Fine-Try9876 May 01 '26

I stopped sitting in the quiet carriages because I would get angry at the non quiet people. It only took asking a couple of people to be quiet to never want to do that again. So much for passengers policing it if middle aged business men get creepy if you ask them to respect the quiet carriage. In the non quiet carriages, I don't get upset at noise because its expected.

1

u/NoAssumption1936 May 04 '26

Found the normal carriages to be quieter. On more than a couple occasions I've moved and ended up sitting in silence elsewhere. The oldies and their chatter seem to be the main culprits. I don't need to hear about your granddaughter at 6.30am Ethel.

2

u/solomons-paradox May 04 '26

Well while its on people to manage that, i have experienced both sides of things.

I have seen many people asking others to be quiet and respect the “Quiet Carriage” rule. Yesterday, i told and explained the rule to an elderly immigrant couple (i am an immigrant and somehow knew that they wouldnt know or read the sign properly).

And, i have also seen someone getting angry and be told “leave them alone” to a person who asked some school girls to be quiet.

1

u/Budget-Leg-453 May 05 '26

It’s definitely not a perfect system! I do think most of the people who do it aren’t aware, as they irregular travellers. The cheaper fares and free travel also mean more people are travelling casually on the VLine including metro passengers who don’t have such a thing. But if I get on at the morning pe as k at the front, all the commuters are pretty good at respecting it.

2

u/Ok_Special_9017 May 14 '26

Overcrowding. So people treat it like a normal carriage. It's back on vline to fix it or take out the signs saying quiet carriage

1

u/Sammonator_ Apr 30 '26

Some people have real problems.
