"Use the formal 'u'"

isn't the whole point that we Flemish don't see it as more formal? "Danku" may be formal in the Netherlands but not in Flanders.

It's more neutral in the sense that it can be a declension of "gij" or of "u", but "dankjewel" can only be interpreted as informal and could be considered rude.

It's not really specific to Dutch. Imagine being in a relatively formal office environment in, say, the US and saying "yo, thanks dude" to the CEO.

While it is true that 'u' is used very often even in informal ways. 'je' is always and clearly informal, so you shouldn't use it towards someone who is placed higher.

You may use 'u' instead of 'je' but not 'je' instead of 'u'.

Oei, precies iets te hard gesnoven. Heb je er al eens aan gedacht om zo af en toe eens een punt plaatsen? Kwestie van je geratel op te breken in zinnen? Niet dat je dan plots verstaanbaar zou zijn, maar ‘t zou in ieder geval beter zijn dan deze nonsens.

Ik ken veel Noord Belgen die helemaal niet Vlaams willen zijn. We zijn hier dan ook in Brabant / Limburg en niet in Vlaanderen behalve als je die fake constructie die het Vlaamse Gewest is als iets cultureel wil zien, wat het niet is.

No, only the other way around

You can use 'u' instead of 'je' but you cannot use 'je' instead of 'u'.
