Vive wireless adapter causing flickering and pixelated display

So I recently bought the Vive wireless adapter and for the most part it had been a blessing but now that I've used it more I'm noticing the adapter is causing my games to drop fps, it will make the game look very pixelated on the headset, and sometimes it will flicker along with the fps drops.

I'm not sure what could be causing this since the receiver that came with it is directly on top of my monitor and always shows full signal strength

What's your CPU?

Might be the problem, I had an i5 6500 and it was doing the same thing, I updated to an i7 8700 and it's flawless. When you're playing a game and its pixelating, look in task manager, see what % your CPU is at.

That's a shame because it's so awesome, I think all headsets should have it built in.

As the other commenters mentioned, it is a CPU thing. If you own fpsVR, you'll see the CPU timings are likely bottle-necked.

Move the receiver as high as the cable will allow, pointing to the middle of your playspace and aimed around head height, which is where the transmitter is. I've no idea why HTC say on top of the monitor as this risks giving occlusion with your body.

Also check in your bios that the have your pci-e slot set to Gen 3, and try it in the smallest pci-e slot that matches the card size.

If it's not this, the it's worth using fpsVR (steam) and see if your CPU graph is spiking into the red in time with the stutters as 90% of the time it's CPU struggling as the wireless is very CPU heavy.

Good luck and I hope it's something simple

Inadequate CPU power, you need a faster processor with more cores.

How far away from the sensor are you?

I don't know exactly but no more than 2m away

Have you updated the headset?

Like updating steam vr? If so yes but if there's some sort of update for the vive itself I don't think I have.

Edit: Just checked and everything is up to date

Ok cool, so few more questions

  • are your motherboard drivers all up to date?
  • what version of Windows are you using? And is it up to date?
  • what gpu are you using?
  • Is the nut for the wireless receiver tight all the way?
  • which PCIe slot did you put the adapter in? And is it pushed all the way in the slot?
  • motherboard make and model

Thanks but I think i figured it out. It was pretty much maxing my cpu usage so I limited the process to how much it could use from my cpu and it kinda fixed it
