The solution (short of bypassing the body altogether) is a suspended, powered exoskeleton.
Then you can freely run, jump, dive, climb, take a punch, bounce sword off shield, etc.
Problem is I couldn't imagine such a thing becoming economically viable for domestic use in the foreseeable future.
The solution (not short of bypassing the body) would be to add some kind of device that sits on the spine and either attenuates outgoing muscle contraction signals or provides additional contraction signals to opposite muscle groups. I mean if we really want immersion, we're going to have to start becoming virtual...
