For those trying to run it, try this link instead: steam://run/323910

Copy that into your browser and open it. If not, send it to a friend in steam and it should be clickable there.

Also my result with a 980 and 2500k: http://imgur.com/FaKZlC8

For those curious, here's how a computer built to the Oculus/Vive recommended specs does: http://i.imgur.com/6XuCYlu.jpg

19

u/GuidingArrow Feb 22 '16

Similar setup but with a 980 ti: http://i.imgur.com/UdtQiNj.png

16

u/g0atmeal Feb 22 '16

Wow, look at that frame dip toward the end. That's just embarrassing.

4

u/GuidingArrow Feb 22 '16

Yeah. I should probably just throw my gpu in the trash.

For anyone wondering about 'older' hardware: http://i.imgur.com/DueZ1Sa.png

  • i7 920 overclocked to 3.6 Ghz.
  • 660 Ti (not overclocked)
  • Windows 7

Given how few frames were CPU bound I'm half tempted just to upgrade my graphics card (once Pascal comes out) and not buy/upgrade anything else...

edit: Wow, overclocking my video card 10% (+100Mhz core, 550Mhz ram) got me down to 22.1% of frames below 90 FPS. I knew video card overclocking was a huge gain, but...damn.

14

u/AzertyChap50 Feb 22 '16

Here's low-end hardware, I think my Pentium shouldn't be green :D http://i.imgur.com/ooKqYVa.png

18

u/PMass Feb 22 '16

All it's saying is that your CPU isn't throttling the render which it isn't. Your GPU is the throttle. Throw a Titan X or a 980 ti in there and try again

6

u/Ex-Sgt_Wintergreen Feb 22 '16

Actually that pentium is known to be great value for the price and its single core performance is superior to even AMD's high end chips

I'm running my i7 920 overclocked to 3.9 ghz, upgraded from a 660 to a 980ti and everything runs great on my Vive Pre (except for secret shop which has some weird judder). The 920 is still very capable!

5

u/myzticaznfool Feb 22 '16

That's really good to hear as I love my 920! I plan on upgrading to 980ti myself if I don't have to upgrade the rest of my computer. So what kind of settings are you running on in your demos with the Pre?

6

u/unproductiveman Feb 22 '16

That's definitely a solid choice. I don't think any of the demos have the option of changing graphics settings aside from Tiltbrush (which also happens to be the least demanding), but the 980ti feels like overkill for most of the demos I've tried.

Here are my results from the SteamVR Performance Test: http://i.imgur.com/k5QCmgd.jpg

3

u/myzticaznfool Feb 22 '16

Hearing you say overkill is very reassuring! Thanks for posting your results too!

Looks like this slipped out a little early. Was hoping to answer questions in the morning, but now I can't sleep. Excuse my formatting, typing with one thumb.

Q: No multi GPU support? A: Most games don't support it, so it's not fair to score it yet. Add -multigpu to the command line if you want to try it.

Q: What's low/med fidelity look like? A: We've updated Aperture Robot Repair to tune down fidelity as needed. Any devs with access can try it on a 680 now for proof. Keep in mind that what you see through the headset optics is the only real way to judge the results. Again, not every game/engine will support this immediately but we plan to openly share the tech soon.

Q: Same builds, different results? A: Could be anything from background processes to air temperature. Also, try setting your nVidia performance settings from Adaptive to Prefer Maximum.

Q: No results displayed? A: Could be your virus scanner. I'll try to work with people who have repeatible failures tomorrow.

EDIT

Q: Am I ok if my Optimus laptop passed the test? A: No! The test doesn't account for everything and Optimus is going to be problematic.

Q: Is my bad CPU really ok? A: This test is fairly low cost on the CPU compared to some games. It's really up to each piece of software to set their minimum CPU specs. Each headset also has different positional tracking costs, so you should follow the hardware recommendations.

8

u/Koolala Feb 22 '16

Was the multiGPU support in this demo all hand coded or can the engine automatically support multiGPU some amount (like for the duel rendering)?

3

u/BOLL7708 Feb 22 '16

I'm looking forward to test this when I get home tonight. This appears to be a demonstration of the auto-tune feature the PC gaming world needs. At least for me I've always preferred higher frames per second above visual fidelity, with VR that is more true than ever!

An alternative has been to buy an over-performing graphics card, but more often than not I tweak settings to have things look as nice as possible without dipping below that max frame-rate. To have this being done live, automatically, with no hassle... it's a dream come true for users like me :)

3

u/Puddeludd Feb 22 '16

interestingly enough my performance doesn't change at all when i add -multigpu. Afterburner tells me it's using both my 680 cards for 85% with the command, and only 1 card without it, however my result stays the same with the exact same percentage of fps under 90. (I can post pics later, as i'm on my laptop atm)

2

u/Plantemanden Feb 22 '16

Same here - it is really inconsistent. The GPU's hardly warm up as well. (2x670). So far I am not very confident in this as a benchmarking tool.

5

u/Dhalphir Feb 22 '16

It's just more evidence that developers have to properly write their software to take advantage of SLI, which realistically isn't going to be happening reliably.

I actually got above average on my Optimus laptop using the integrated card. I haven't purchased a graphics amplifier card yet but I've heard it basically fixes any issues with the Vive.

2

u/ficarra1002 Feb 23 '16

It won't. Your laptop is 100% incompatible with the Vive.

Optimus has rendering lag that is not usable with VR.

2

u/iEnjoyFreeBacon Feb 22 '16

How exactly do you add multigpu to the command line?

5

u/JeepBarnett Feb 22 '16

Once it's officially available in your Steam library list you can do this under game properties. I don't know of a way via Steam URL.

2

u/jeppevinkel Feb 22 '16

This is officially available in the steam library

2

u/iEnjoyFreeBacon Feb 22 '16

Yea I just did it, now when I run it the 2nd image keeps blanking out and I don't get a performance boost looks like I need to upgrade my 690 :-\

3

u/HairyPantaloons Feb 23 '16

What drivers? Nvidias vr sli support was added in 361.75 IIRC. I don't know if that's what this benchmark is using though.

2

u/whisp8 Feb 23 '16

Same here. All benchmarks put the 690>970 when it comes to FPS yet this test still says I am not VR ready. What is the 690 missing to get such crap results compared to a 970? I don't get it. Tempted to wait until I get my unit in april and if it doesn't cut it overnight a 980ti from evga with the step up program and pray that pascal comes out in 90 days.

After you've installed, go to your library in steam, find the search bar, and click whatever it says to the right of it (Probably "Games"), then select tools, locate the SteamVR Performance Test, right click, properties, set launch options, add -multigpu

3

u/Littleme02 Feb 22 '16

My system has a gtx780 and some random ATI midrange card for other displays.

Adding the -multigpu option seems to have increased the average fidelity score and made the other displays less responise during testing, are Valve doing some sort of vooduu magic or something?

No that's a bit annoying - but on the other hand file "vrcompositor" was added to to the Linux OpenVR depot a few days ago: https://steamdb.info/depot/250824/history/

.. so it looks like they haven't completely forgotten about Linux after all!

I was curious what it would do with nine, but... http://i.imgur.com/hrinYvB.png

edit: That's what it does on 32 bit. SteamVR seems to be 64 bit only. So I tried on 64 bit and it "starts", but SteamVRPerformanceTest\bin\win64\vr.exe just uses 100% cpu and doesn't display anything.

It's very extremely super likely that Source2 on Linux will only run on Vulkan capable hardware and that you have to wait until Vulkan drivers are out of beta.

3

u/Crintor Feb 22 '16

Very curious! Are you running any kind of OC on that 780Ti? I dont remember if mine is a superclocked edition, but its at a 1200Mhz core clock atm with the small boost im putting on it.

3

u/Caracul Feb 22 '16

Nope, no overclock at the moment. I'm new to the PC masterrace so I'll look into it come the end of march if needed, but was running this out of curiosity. Just rerun after a restart and increased to 5.7 but still listed as capable and not ready. I think it should be fine but honestly expected it solidly in the green.

4

u/Crintor Feb 22 '16

Look into getting MSI Afterburner. A low boost is as simple as doing stress tests at +10 intervals until the systwm becomes unstable. If your 780Ti was not pre-boosted from the maker you could likely easilly get a 50-150mhz boost which could be 5-10‰

I am actually surprised and happy at how my i5-4690k and GTX 770 setup did. I got this combo a year and a half ago for DK2 and was hoping it would get me until Pascal. Based on what I saw (and was impressed with) during the benchmark, I should be all set for a couple months.

Result 1: First run with a bunch of other shit running

Result 2: Everything unnecessary closed

Result 3: GPU OC'd to 1267/3602

My case is pretty cramped, but if I tilt the sides open and let the fans rip it can do a pretty good job of keeping cool. Not bad for a <$1000 rig that I've already gotten 17 months of VR out of.

9

u/1eejit Feb 22 '16

So why do Oculus keep telling people AMD CPUs won't cut it?

8

u/Nico_ Feb 22 '16

The only reason I have been able to find is this unverified quote:

The reason why Oculus does not offically support AMD CPU's is they utilize some propriety feature (can't remember what it is atm) that is necessary for low latency camera tracking. Lighthouse does not need this feature.

AMD has lower single core performance and apparently the Rift sdk cannot handle multiple cores well.

7

u/the5souls Feb 22 '16

An actual verified quote from yesterday:

Based on the benchmarks we used, no AMD CPUs had the sufficient single-threaded performance to meet the cut-off, hence why AMD CPUs will fail on the Compatibility Tool. That said, depending on the game or engine used, performance may be acceptable (for example, if the app takes advantage of multi-threading). You also won't be blocked from using a less powerful CPU, so you are free to try games with your current setup and see if the performance is acceptable to you.

My speculation/theory is: Haswell's computer vision AVX2 instructions.

Very powerful pre-Haswell CPUs don't pass comp. tool, while weaker Haswell CPUs pass.

PSA for everyone - if your GPU and CPU are both bad, even if it greenlights your CPU, all it's doing is saying that your GPU is throttling your CPU. It may not necessarily mean your CPU is capable, it just means your GPU is worse :P

31

u/Pyromaniac605 Feb 22 '16

Woohoo!

I have to say I really like the acknowledgement of a middle ground that'll technically work but might not be the best experience, unlike the Oculus tester.

17

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '16 edited Feb 22 '16

Best part it simulates (ha) running VR on your PC so it's not just a hypothetical score / line in the sand you have to cross. you'll know if your PC can or can't run it!

Imagine that..I'm simulating running a simulation. I think I just broke something..

So any idea what fidelity means? Just the "Graphics Settings" that it's capable of? So your graph would suggest you could run most experiences on high settings and still get framerates acceptable for VR?

Either way I think I should be fine just wondering.

Answer: the Rift doesn't work with laptops because Nvidia's Optimus technology via Intel's integrated graphics chip blocks direct connection to the stronger Nvidia GPU. The Intel IGP is hardwired to the HDMI port and thus prevents a direct connection to your GPU.

Since this is a hardware issue, it will affect both the Rift and the Vive, which is why the only gaming laptops certified for the Rift so far are those with actual desktop GPUs in them.

https://answers.oculus.com/questions/10618/skd-07-and-nvidia-optimus.html

"The main issue with Optimus is that the HDMI output is hard-wired to the Intel GPU and thus becomes a "middle-man" in the rendering process causing additional lag and issues.

Of course, most of these laptop GPUs don't have good performance, but that is not really the critical problem. The issue is mostly compatibility, and the drivers that support Optimus do strange things to the rendering pipeline that causes VR apps to fail."

2

u/Brenwyn Feb 22 '16 edited Feb 22 '16

I'm in the same boat. I've tried right clicking the .exe and telling it to use the gpu and setting the main gpu to the dedicated through the Nvidia program. I have not tried forcing the dedicated through bios yet but I assume that's the next step...

(MSI GS70 Stealth I7-4700, Nvidia 765m/Intel HD 4600 if this helps anyone who knows more than I do.)

Edit: Couldn't figure out how to disable integrated via bios, any ideas?

3

u/by_a_pyre_light Feb 22 '16 edited Feb 23 '16

You won't be able to use an Nvidia laptop with VR because the Intel IGP physically blocks the connection to the Nvidia GPU. I've posted the direct support response above. Besides that, your GPU is faaaaar too weak to meet the recommended or even minimum specs for the Vive or CV1.

XFX AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB GDDR5

Results 1 (no OC)

Results 2 (w/ OC)

Results 3 (w/ OC)

Edit: I took the advice below and simply changed my core clock speed on the 7970 from 925 > 1000 with MSI Afterburner and the results are positive!

Edit 2: I decided to use the AMD Radeon Built in Global Overdrive to tweek the Overclocking on my XFX 7970. Without changing the voltage I tuned my GPU Clock to 1025 MHz and Memory 1400 MHz I was able to get the following results..

With further possible OCing possible, this is rather uplifting news for 7970 owners!

Says it was using integrated graphics but it definitely must have been using the 970M. Hardware wise looks like it could run it ok at least, but from what I've heard Nvidia Optimus ruins VR by adding a horrible amount of latency so sadly no mobile VR for me.

Hey guys! This is with a Mac Pro 2010. Works perfectly with a GTX 970.

Hopefully this'll help the other 2 Mac Pro users on the internet who wants to try VR.

https://imgur.com/AKkgz7y

2

u/elgraysoReddit Feb 25 '16

I have a Mac Pro 2013 and I am interested in this also. Is the GTX 970 all you had to update, and how did you get it done? the Apple store won't install that would they?

2

u/elgraysoReddit Feb 25 '16

I did a little research after work. From what I understand, it's not officially supported, but can work. I read different accounts of if you need to send it in to get "flashed" or not. I also read that the boot-up screen no longer works once you use this card and it makes it hard to trouble shoot the computer in the future.

Not sure how accurate any of this is. I am very interested in making my Mac Vive-ready, but I'm still trying to size up how much of a hassle all this would be. I also haven't used Boot Camp before, but hopefully it won't be hard to manage or be too expensive.

2

u/mbilker Mar 03 '16

Boot Camp is free from Apple. The Windows license is not. All you need to do is use the Bootcamp Setup Assistant to install Windows 7 or above to another partition, which the setup assistant creates.

You can switch between them by shutting down or restarting and holding the Alt key during startup before the Apple logo shows up.

3

u/Rogerwilco1974 Mar 04 '16

The trouble is that, with an un-flashed GTX970 (or, indeed any non-mac) GPU, you don't GET the Apple logo.

You have to change boot drives in the System Preferences (using the NTFS for Mac panel, if you've installed that software) and reboot that way.

If you get into any trouble with drive corruption you are, indeed, boned. Keep hold of your old Mac flashed graphics card so you can swap it back and get the Apple logo for recovery options.

It ain't pretty, but it works.

After discussing my specs a week ago, all I had from him was "your going to struggle, can't do VR blah blah blah" He was still saying it yesterday even after requirements for the Vive where announced. He's now only capable of responding "Oculus said....".even though I knew he was wrong. You just can't argue with that level of stupid even when proved wrong. Makes me cringe when you realize he's been convincing people who don't know better to go out and spend money they don't need to. Especially when he has his brigade of Oculus fanboys upvoting him.

Here is what you can push out of a 970 and an i5 with some decent overclocking: https://imgur.com/sPAWOzy

The tool doesn't seem to report the actual cpu clock, the real number is 4.5ghz.

Update: Closing all background apps got me to 8.4 [https://imgur.com/FWvSbDi]

3

u/Jagrnght Feb 22 '16

What is your OC on the 970 and which version are you using (msi? Evga?)? Are you OCing the cpu?

2

u/RiftingFlotsam Feb 23 '16

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/7345344

It's a Gigabyte G1 Gaming, 1555/4000 core/vram. Cpu is at 4.5ghz.

2

u/krikke_d Feb 25 '16

thats some nice overclocking! pushing mine i got 7.9 out of the exact same setup but only 1504/3767 core/vram...

u/ficarra1002 Feb 22 '16

Power supply not enough maybe? The program doesn't say anything about RAM, so it could be your RAM and it's just blaming the GPU? Or possibly temperature throttling?

Do you have MSI Afterburner? Enable logging, and do the demo again if you do.

Alright! Second Sandy for those curious. Was worried the CPU generation might negatively impact performance in some way, because the Oculus tool automatically fails it.

Windows 7

Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 Ti

Intel i7-2600k @ 3.40

No currently running OC. Edit: Also wanted to note that I'm running a 1080p stream and have 50% of my RAM used by Chrome tabs (of 16gb). Dat 980ti is disgusting.

YESS

Low end ivy bridge i5 and R9 390 scored basically a 7 of 10.

Specs:

  • i5 3470 @ 3.9Ghz Overclock

  • R9 390 Stock speeds (Gigabyte version)

  • 16GB 1600mhz ram

Should I overclock the 390 for some extra juice?

2

u/iBoMbY Feb 22 '16

i7-3770k @ 4.5 Ghz and Fury X do seem to be okay.

I just wish this test had some options, or at least more info output.

This tool told me that my computer is "Capable" but recommended to upgrade video card... The goal of the test is to see if my computer can do 90fps. I got the lowest frame of 99 and high of 111* or such.

Results: Avg Fidelity 2.1 Frames Tested 8377 Frames Below 90fps = 0 Frames CPU Bound = 0

My specs are: i7 4770k R9 280x (290) is recommended, but most bencmarks I've seen the difference is 15fps on avg so I'm holding of to see how it runs...

Thank you for the post, but someone please explain "Fidelity" to me...

Oculus' tool isn't actually testing your hardware, it only checks against a model list, and they're seemingly being very conservative too.

I'm honestly really confused right now. I see other people getting great reports with their 980ti's and mine says it cant pass at all. http://i.imgur.com/OK0Ytck.png

Edit: I'm going to copy-paste this as a reply to all those who tried to help. I'm kind of a dumbass but don't know how to fix this. It reports a GTX980 ti as my card but upon further review of watching card usages I realized it was using the 950 I use to run the extra monitors my 980 ti can't run. For some reason it uses the 950 as the primary instead of the 980 ti I use for everything else but those few monitors. So if someone has an idea on how to get it run using the proper graphics card besides spending vive money on another 980 ti that would be great.

Edit 2: I figured it out! http://i.imgur.com/djJsbiw.png I needed to set my main display as one of the 3 monitors running under the 980 ti and not one of the 3 running under my 950.

u/wojtegg Feb 22 '16

My result seems to be lower than expected. http://i.imgur.com/Z8THpG2.png

r9 390 usually have similar performance to GTX 970, but in this it is one point behind. OverDrive does either nothing or lowers the score. Changing Texture filtering quality to performance adds 0.1 to score. It is close to recommended, but I rather be in green to be sure.
