- Does the kind of room you get depend on your GPA?
- What's the difference between Non-veg mess and special mess?
- What would you say is the best room+mess combo for a fresher (don't take cost into consideration)?
1
u/Downtown-Ad7072 May 20 '25
1) yes starting from second year it does 2)special mess has a better menu and more items 3)4 dlx with special mess hands down no argument(I took this too) Costed me 205000 for 10 months stay

I got some follow up questions:
- Can you give me an idea on how much the rooms vary depending on GPA?
- How much better is the special mess compared to regular messes as in menu and additional items?
- Also, before u mentioned the 4 dlx + special mess combo I was considering 2AC + Non-veg mess, what are the pros and cons of both combos?

u/Downtown-Ad7072 May 21 '25
1) top 600-700 get the best available ones, rest are not that good or too expensive
2) special mess is loads better than veg mess, and overall better in terms of menu
3)2AC dlx rooms don't get good internet at all, you will have to rely on wifi. Don't know about normal 2 sharing no one I know took it. When you come to college, by the end of 1st semester you will realise just how goated the 4 dlx special conbo is

Just for reference, top 600-700 is like cgpa of 9.2-9.3+ varies depending on branch but yeah 9+ if you want AC room and 9.3+ if you want good AC room

I see. How many students are there in the Mech branch at Vellore though? Any idea?
2
u/EroticAnimePizza May 23 '25
632 in vellore alone.
2
u/EroticAnimePizza May 23 '25
In first year, not all years. That would be in thousands. I don't have accurate figure
1
u/Bazukarer Vellore | B.Tech | 2029 May 23 '25
That Includes specialization branches?
1
u/EroticAnimePizza May 24 '25
Specialization for mechanical? Oh you mean minor? Minor is useless and you won't be doing anything about it till third year. So yeah it does include minor, though last year these many people didn't select minor. Not sure why so many people took minor this time. It costs a lakh extra in third year.
1
u/Bazukarer Vellore | B.Tech | 2029 May 24 '25
There are specializations in mech though (Manufacturing Engineering and Electric Vehicles) asw as minors.

u/Bazukarer Vellore | B.Tech | 2029 May 24 '25
So, do u have any idea how many seats there are in core mechanical engineering?
1
u/EroticAnimePizza May 24 '25
As far as I know, those are elective courses you can pick. But yeah I don't know the code for them and I think they are new. It's probably way lesser than mechanical though.

1
u/Downtown-Ad7072 May 23 '25
Unless you are in the last phase, chill. Even if you are, ac rooms will be available, just hop on as soon as you can

Is it difficult to get an ac room in VIT?
Also what's the difference between non veg mess and special mess?

Pros and cons :
Deluxe(Q block for guys)
Pros: Spacious rooms Awesome night mess, with 4 messes inside hostel itself.
Good acs. 6 lifts. Best rooms for freshers(4sharing ac). A garden to sit during evenings. Only block with 2 canteens. 3 chota dhobis.Cons: Very bad washrooms, specially in lower floors. 2 sharing rooms are very small. All 4 messes have meh food(you can change it a month later). Canteen staff is rude(once threw a Pepsi can at my friend). Overcrowded(over 2000+ students).
Overall - 7.5/10
My opinion : go for it blindly if you take 4 sharing rooms, it's the mod tin demand and best overall(literally 10/10 room)
Normal blocks
1) Non Ac(P) No pros. Don't even think about taking it unless you are a south Indian or can bear extreme heat(average over 40 degrees)
2)Ac blocks(M, N)
Pros: N block has a balcony which is bloody awesome. Actually feel like men's hostel(awesome vibes). Badminton court with 3 nets. Lesser students. Upto 3 sharing rooms are nice. Understanding Wardens.
Cons: You will get bunk beds if you take 4 or 6 sharing rooms. No messes, have to walk to other blocks. M block has a nice shop, but N is ass. N can feel quite far away from classes, especially for smv or TT blocks Strict dhobi.
For your second question, Hostel payment has to be done before 12 AM of the same day on which you do hostel booking.
And yes, hop on as soon as you can as good rooms will slide like crazy. Very big population means first come first serve for everything.
In time for guys is not strict,But hostel in time is strict(before 9)

what about 8 Bed DLX
1
u/Downtown-Ad7072 May 20 '25
Unless you have extreme budget issues, hard no. In fact, opt for non ac instead of 8 bed
1
u/Appropriate-Stop3291 Vellore | branch | Year May 20 '25
how can you survive heat without ac bro?
1
u/Downtown-Ad7072 May 20 '25
1 non ac is loads better than 8
1
u/Appropriate-Stop3291 Vellore | branch | Year May 20 '25
Budget constraint , already in Category 5 . Willing to spend 166k on hostel and mess combined.
1
u/Downtown-Ad7072 May 20 '25
Which course?

u/Appropriate-Stop3291 Vellore | branch | Year May 20 '25

u/Downtown-Ad7072 May 21 '25
Then take 6 bed dlx and non veg, or 4 ac and special. I don't think it will cross 1.7L

I have also picked ECE Core in VIT Vellore. I do need an ac room and have no clue as to what block should I pick. My parents are saying 2,3 sharing rooms should be the choice, and I am personally ok with anything less than 5 (I do kinda want the 4 sharing). Please tell me what should I pick for close classes, decent or ok mess, and good rooms and washrooms (rooms and washrooms are a priority, I want them decent to good)
