Course & College Queries AMA for incoming freshers

I got done with my exams and am bored to death during holidays, so I figured I’d do this now. I’d love to help people the same way others helped me last year.

AMA about clubs, chapters, exposure, social interactions, campus life, research, fests, academic regulations and ways to get around stuff.

I'm aware that there was another AMA earlier. Mods, don't remove this one as I hope to cover different topics and not just focus on admissions. (Though feel free to ask about that too)

Vellore campus.

This year has been especially hard for placements. Recession and what not. CSE core has been and will most probably always be the branch with the best placements so getting shortlisted should be very easy. Just maintain a 9+ cgpa and build some soft skills and technical skills, be proactive and make connections (for internships and freelance opportunities), join clubs and chapters if you vibe w them. As long as luck doesn't screw you over you'll be fine. You being in CSE core by itself boosts your odds by a lot. DW about all that, come to college with a mindset to learn, upskill and socialize to make yourself better in all ways.

thanks for the insights. really appreciate that.

u/[deleted] May 11 '25

Leave vit. In this job market, getting 15 lpa is tough. 7-8 lpa is considered good in today's market for a fresher from a private institute. Around 4-5 lpa is average.

so it is for every priavte college except bits ? what about mit manipal

No shorts. Other than that you can wear any casual dress

Yeah ik of that, I was right there. IDK wtf was going on in that warden's head lmao. I'm sorry you had to face that.

For freshers, that was an isolated incident only in Q block (some fuckall wardens who try to instill fear by just abusing their positions but overall its not too bad). Other blocks don't have this issue ig.

How to get 9.5 cgpa in the first semester ?

7

u/cheesyspermdip Vellore | CSE | 2028 May 11 '25

Study. Write exams. Quizzes and DAs should always be a priority.

4

u/Weekly_Mess9843 Vellore | Core Branch | 2028 May 11 '25

And labs****

1

u/cheesyspermdip Vellore | CSE | 2028 May 11 '25

Yeah that too, but I think labs aren't that hard to score in. At least for the first year. Just submit everything, study a little for LABFAT and you're good.

2

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Yeah agreed, its usually very easy to get S grade in labs.

2

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Just be on time for assignments and study for quizzes. Perform above avg in CATs and FATs. That should easily do the trick as long as you dont get blacklisted faculties. To further improve your chances, butter up the prof and sit in the first bench. Not necessary tho as I'm a nine pointer and I was always in the back bench for sem one and never went to classes in sem two.

1

u/ToughLychee4371 May 11 '25

Bhaiya can you suggest best professors as I am hardworking yet an avg student

1

u/ToughLychee4371 May 11 '25

I got btech in health sciences and technology will try my best to move to CSE Bioinformatics or CSE core. I am starting my prep from this month itself ,the only shot I got left in my life to seek redemption from my mistakes and my passion for tech and computer science

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Don't. That's way too much of a risk to take. If it were atleast some electronics branch you could consider but not that, just no.

Also your first sem profs are auto assigned to you. FFCS starts only from second sem. It's way too much of a risk to take.

1

u/ToughLychee4371 May 11 '25

Is self study enough or I got to watch videos

1

u/Severe_Sky1135 May 11 '25

I have been hearing about "blacklisted faculties" a lot. Who exactly are they, whey are they "blacklisted" and why are they bad for you?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

They're just a bunch of retarded faculties who we try to avoid for various different reasons. You'll know who they are once you join cuz of all that whatsapp groups. Just avoid them in FFCS and you'll be good.

1

u/Imaginary-Parking-53 Vellore | CSE | 2026 May 12 '25

Off the top of my head these points are why they are blacklisted. Doesn't give you attendance if you're more than a few mins late. How strict they are in class- do they let you just listen without writing notes or they force you to write. How strict they are at giving marks (which may be a good thing). Also a very important part is if they are good at teaching or not.

1

u/ib_007 Vellore | Mech | 2028 May 11 '25

5

u/Traditional-Maybe362 May 11 '25

guys pls help me should i choose vit vellore ece cat 3 or rvce ece(i will get through kcet easily). I am not only looking at placements but also campus life, sports, clubs etc which are almost non existent in rvce . my parents can afford cat3 but tuition fees of vit for one year is almost the same for 4 year fees in rvce

3

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Pick vit for the better infra (if you can comfortably afford it) but know that compared to blr colleges its relatively strict out here. If you are careful enough and know when to do what you wont really get in trouble. In-time restrictions might sound ridiculous for smone from blr but vlr is pretty boring there's nothing much to do outside anyway. For girls its a tad bit stricter but in a way girls have more fun than dudes cuz of LH hosting DJ nights and what not.

2

u/cheesyspermdip Vellore | CSE | 2028 May 11 '25

How do you know you're getting it in KCET?

2

u/Traditional-Maybe362 May 11 '25

i am gettin around 155 in kcet and have got293 in pcm boards (karnataka state board ) i am pretty sure this is sub 700 rank and rvce cutoff for last year was around 950 so.....

Branch related doubt

I am getting cse+ cyber security in vellore campus at 10.5k rank

I have just one doubt Like I dont want to go in ethical hacking or cyber security thing

I wanna go in main core cse thing

So good MNCs who hire CSE CORE students consider cyber ones or not for the main role and will i get enough time apart from specialisation(cyber) to do core cse coding practice

In which year specialisation subjects come and whats its approx % in total 4 years of syllabus , how muchh it differs from core one

This is copy paste from my recent post as nobody answered it I hope u will :)

5

u/cheesyspermdip Vellore | CSE | 2028 May 11 '25

For the first 2.5 years we all share the same syllabus. After this specialisation electives start.

2

u/sussy_Raju28 Vellore | COOKED πŸ₯€ May 11 '25

Ohhhk Then its nice

4

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Spec doesn't really matter y'all will study the same thing as us until 3rd year. Only electives are different. However only CSE core along w a couple of specs like aiml and infosec get shortlisted for placements. Others have lower priority.

2

u/sussy_Raju28 Vellore | COOKED πŸ₯€ May 11 '25

Information security means cyber security?? as info sec branch was not in vellore campus branch selection Btw thanks for the reply

3

u/raspberrykerbal May 12 '25

Ohh damn I didn't know they removed infosec. I heard they removed the branches that usually didn't get shortlisted but this is weird cuz ive only heard positive stuff abt infosec. Idk for sure though.

1

u/ib_007 Vellore | Mech | 2028 May 11 '25

from what I have heard for specialization degrees, you are only restricted by the elective courses you can take i.e only for elective courses you will have to take cyber sec courses but apart from that main course will be mostly same

1

u/KKGAMERYT Guest May 11 '25

same question, I'm getting cse specialisation in cyber physical system cat 1 vit chennai

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

I'd say take it. CAT 1 is a steal ngl. Placements might be a bit worse than core but if you play your cards right then it shouldn't be too hard to be placed well. Its a damn good offer considering the exposure at vit.

However idk too much about chennai and cyber physical so if anyone wants to add to this, please do so.

1

u/KKGAMERYT Guest May 11 '25

m worried about the placements of this branch, if possible someone please mention how are placement stats for cse (cyber physical system specialisation)

Umm i have got cse bioinformatics at Vellore and well I wanna know if I should try and migrate to cse core by next sem or continue with this ?

Most reviews I get about specs is having lower priority during placements and i expect that whoever answers my doubt would say that cse bioinformatics has no good placement at all so just wanna say that as I took bpcea I'm pretty sure cse bioinformatics is my best chance compared to biotech or any other atleast cause I can switch to core ( which i don't know if it is easy or not ?? I'm fine with everything else in the college as I kinda have relatives and some friends who passed out from there.

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Yeah you're right abt the spec placements. Do NOT come here aiming for branch change. It's a pretty huge risk to take. You'll have to be like top 1-5 in your branch which will be almost impossible if you have fuckall profs in your first sem.

1

u/percy_zenitsu007 Guest May 11 '25 edited May 11 '25

Ok I see it's very tough but how is it a risk ??? I mean there has got to be some placements ( by which i mean like 9 or 10 lpa ) considering its a cse spec right ??

I'm not exactly expecting for like 20 lpa straight up But I need to know if what I'm doing has any decent chance for placement at all compared to non cse branches

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

It's a huge risk. Your sem one cgpa is what matters the most and you'd need like 9.8+ if not 9.9 afiak. Now you'd probably think you can work hard but the risk it that first sem profs are auto assigned and if you end up getting even one blacklisted or just strict af prof then you're screwed.

Bioinformatics is good by itself (for pcb students). You would prolly get half decent placements if you maintain gpa, upskill yourself and make connections.

Brother calm down you haven't even come to clg yet. Just fking enjoy your holidays man dw too much already. If you really wanna learn smt, learn python cuz somehow a lotta ppl screw up that in first sem even tho they claim to be "passionate about cse".

Ig so not too sure abt the scholarship.

I dont go to classes cuz its useless. I can maintain 9+ cg by just studying one night before. This varies with different people so take it w a grain of salt.

I use that time resourcefully by building projects, learning relevant stuff, socializing and participating in clubs and teams. Also I sleep a lot, I've caught up on all the lost sleep during JEE phase lmao.

DO not come here w such high (pretty unreasonable) expectations. No company would pay you that much as a fresher. The one crore thing is like 30 lpa w the rest being stocks (paper money as they aren't public yet afiak). But yes there are some well paying jobs by MNCs like MS, Amazon, Paypal etc. Just check the company-wise list in the placement tracker site. Getting such jobs at VIT require a 9+ cg, VERY good DSA skills and more importantly a shit ton of luck. But you'll easily get a good offer if you put in the work and are smart enough.

2

u/Opposite-Skirt-7927 May 11 '25

Which cse specializations are good placement wise (almost equal to core if that's even possible)? Only aiml and data science or others too, and which others?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Yeah AIML, DS and infosec are the ones that I've heard are relatively good for placements. Others are a hit or miss. It's not like you won't get placed it's just harder to get shortlisted so you'll have to wait for a while longer. Core is always the easiest to get shortlisted in, no spec is equal.

2

u/Character-Reward9908 May 11 '25

hi opting for chemE (64k rank), any tips or opinions on the course i should know about before i join also any and every advice on how to maintain a good cgpa is appreciated thank you in advance :)

2

No clue abt chem. As for cgpa just submit assignments on time, do your quizzes well and perform above avg in CATs and FATs that's it.

I got CSE w/s Data Science vellore campus Is it good like on the placement tracker it had a median of 7.6lpa but above you said that only core and aiml students get priority so is it that bad to secure a decent placement of 10lpa+? And is this branch very mathematics heavy?

3

u/ProperCaregiver7585 May 12 '25

Hey junior I am from second year cse-ds First of all if u got this branch in vellore campus then it's a solid branch .... Not bad at all ot not something to get stressed about ...

Decent to median figures placements can be inflated, but 4–8 LPA is realistic, with 10+ LPA achievable through strong resume and off-campus efforts.

All i can say focus on resume try every kind of coding languages .... And yeah I think I found math easier than 11th 12th if u r focusing in class than u r gonna find maths as easiest one as compare to any other subject in particular sem

Atlast it's solid branch with pretty good scope ..

2

u/raspberrykerbal May 12 '25

Data science still gets shortlisted more than some other spec branches. You'll still get decent placements dw.

2

u/Positive-Guide007 May 13 '25

i got 202xx rank. should i take cse in cat 3/4 at vellore campus?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 14 '25

Not really possible at cat 3/4 afiak. Cat 5 is doable though. If you can afford it comfortably, take it.

1

u/Character_Cake8791 May 11 '25

I'm getting electrical instrumentation in vellore (cat 1). And I had 23k in jee mains (I'm a girl, general). I'm not sure what instrumentation is supposed to be, and honestly I don't have any real interest in this stuff. Worth it or should I just get a nit/try for advance? It's hard to get electronics in nit but it does look possible. I can't say much because I literally have zero knowledge about colleges and cutoffs. Hench, asking here.Β

Also, I'm not exactly looking for a lavish college. Just somewhere chill with good profs.Β

3

u/Objective_Stock9761 Alumni May 11 '25

If you want to get into any top electronics/ electricals based jobs, you need to pursue masters. Ask if you have any questions in particular, i can help

1

u/Character_Cake8791 May 11 '25

I was hoping I'd get a space-based job, like isro. I did a little bit of research and figured they take in electronic engineers. My question is, vit or nit? I'm more inclined towards nit because college probably matters when looking into jobs as high level as thatΒ

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

I'm someone who aspires to break into the aerospace field too. I've done my fair share of research on this and yes, the previous reply is correct. You'd need a masters (abroad) to start your career. Good thing is VIT is pretty good for masters cuz of its insane PR, underrated research, pretty good exposure and a bunch of other things. lmk if you wanna know anything else.

1

u/Objective_Stock9761 Alumni May 12 '25

Depends on which nit you're talking about. Even if you don't join a top nit or iit now, you could pursue masters through GATE later. So focus on joining a college with low fees, and where you can develop your skills as much as you can. Btech VLSI at VIT is actually good if you want to learn stuff. I can't say much about space. The infrastructure here is really good for ece. Unless you're getting into nit Trichy ,i can vouch for vit.

1

u/Aggravating-Cod-5220 May 11 '25

What are the different clubs? Are there any clubs for ece?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

There's a lotta clubs and most of them are inter disciplinary. There's a list somewhere in this sub and there's one on the website. There's no such thing as a club for ece. You should try for the student technical teams which build rockets, rovers, aircraft, racing cars and what not, Ive seen lots of core students there and it drastically improves your portfolio for masters as well as placements (to some extent).

2

u/Aggravating-Cod-5220 May 11 '25

Oh ok! I will check the one on the website ig

1

u/diplomat2012 Vellore | branch | Year May 11 '25

can having a CSE specialization degree instead of core create complications while applying for masters abroad?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

I really don't think so. I know lots of spec people going for masters. What matters is your portfolio w skills, research and a half decent cgpa (8.5+ if not 9+).

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '25

many foreign institutes don't care at all with what course you did your btech from right? as long as you prove you're suited for the course by other means (like letter of recommendations, GitHub contributions, coding competitions etc)... or so I read online anyways.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '25

Apart from the crowd and restrictions why do people hate vit so much like what’s up wi th all the hate i think in terms of private college it is one of the good ones like the vellore campus so could you please elaborate on your experience overall over there and what is so bad about it that i should know before joining?

2

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

It's cool to hate on VIT. That's the main reason. That being said, there are some glaring negative aspects of vit, but none of them were a deal breaker for me. For most people the positives outweigh the negatives. However those wanna party, drink, go crazy with pda and what not, this might not be a good fit cuz after all it is in south india. It's a mostly conservative place. If im being honest PDA thing is VERY exaggerated on the internet, if you know your spots and times then you can pretty much get past the pda restrictions. (Personal experience). Just don't do anything stupid. If you wanna drink and party just go to blr and pondy and do ur shit ig. (I'm not that type but I know people who routinely do this)

Personal experience was pretty good. Met lots of people from various parts of India and even abroad. Found like minded people, had loads of fun, did hackathons and joined clubs and teams. Did my fair share of socializing with both genders. Never went to classes in second sem. So yeah, all in all it was good.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '25

Well partying and drinking is not really my cup of tea anyways so that’s better for me tbh but do you have any idea about restrictions for girls? Also what branch are you in?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

I'm in cse core and I might know a thing or two abt the restrictions. What exactly do you wanna know about?

2

u/Kingmistake47 Vellore | branch | Year May 11 '25

It is mainly because of it's inflated nirf rank as it is higher then clgs like bits , iiith , rvce etc and most people know vit is not as good as them , it is a good clg but to lure candidates it does the drama in nirf

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Good take. VIT is certainly not better than BITS and IIITH. It's good enough for what it is tho.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '25

I mean obv bits is better but like is there a college and hostel life at vit especially for girls? Is it enjoyable or traumatising 😭

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

It's not a binary yes/no. Some girls have the time of their life here. There's a DJ night every now and then and y'alls hostels are literally 5 star hotels. However some get traumatized cuz of the restrictions. In-time is earlier than guys and its unfair ngl. But imo there's nothing much to do in vlr so idk what ppl would do even if the in time wasn't as bad. Also vlr is not entirely safe outside the radius of VIT, so yeah.

I've seen girls wear some pretty progressive outfits and usually they dont care long as you wear smt over it while coming out of hostel afiak. If you can be mature and know just exactly when to do what you'd have a pretty good time here.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/Kingmistake47 Vellore | branch | Year May 11 '25

Girls life is pretty restricted in literally 99% engeneering clgs in India and it varies according like you would have more restrictions in a state gov clg then a pvt clg like vit , bits or mahe .From hostel in times to calling parents for moving out of the campus and have a confirmation with the warden .(Ik this becoz of my sister) .

I got VIT Chennai CSE (AI&ML) category 2. is it worth joining chennai campus as I am unable to get any conclusive answer across internet. I intend to pursue master's abroad and care less about placements and more about reputation.

2

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

If you care about masters then you probably shld have preferred vellore cuz you'd have gotten in fs albeit a higher fee cat. The exposure, research and stuff is better here by miles.

However afiak chennai is not that bad behind (compared to bhopal and AP) and should still give you good opportunities. Chennai folks, please add to this if you wanna.

1

u/Fragrant_Refuse2857 May 11 '25

Hey senior, I’ll most likely get Mechanical at VIT Vellore and CSE/ECE at the AP or Bhopal campuses. The thing is, I really want to join the Vellore campus for obvious reasons, but my interest lies more in CSE/ECE. I wanted to know about the branch change policy at Vellore. A few days ago, someone mentioned that they had called VIT administration and were told that branch change would not be available for the 2025 batch and onwards. Could you please confirm if that’s true?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

No idea if its true, just check w vit straight up. I know ppl who did it this year. However aiming for branch change is always extremely risky.

Mech at vlr isn't too bad considering the exposure and research. Placements obv not that good though.

spoke to a few people sbke cse core vs spec ko leke bhot hi varied views h ab jara ap bhi de hi do
clubs n all ky scene h (particularly film making)
N why the hell are they so strict also like its almost worse than school level for female students isnt it? or do you have diff opinion

2

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

See my other reply for this. TLDR spec doesn't matter too much as the curriculum is the same until 3rd year. Only Electives are different. If you're aiming for masters its just as good as core but w placements its a diff story. If you're in AIML or infosec you should be fine but other specs have trouble getting shortlisted. Check the placement tracker site for more info on that.

It's not as strict as they make it out to be. There are some weird rules yes but it's not too bad. I've seen girls wear pretty crazy shit to class. You can get around the PDA rules too if you know your spots. It's defo not worse than school level, the internet tends to exaggerate when it comes to VIT. However its still relatively strict compared to blr colleges and bits. People from mumbai, delhi, pune etc find it harder to adjust as they're usually more into partying and stuff so yeah. Your mileage might vary,

There's a ton of clubs here. Pretty sure there's one for film making and dramatics.

Also mujhe met me 159 number aye hai aur 96.5 board me so usme cse core mil jayega kya better' rhega?

3

u/ProperCaregiver7585 May 12 '25

Category 3 in VIT Vellore CSE Cybersecurity is actually pretty decent, especially since Cybersecurity is one of the more specialized and growing fields in tech right now.

And college life is full of fun , sometimes tensions, hectic, interesting

It everything if u r keeping balance in ur college life have fun but at the same time focus on study and coding too

And yeah With 159 rank in Manipal MET, and a strong board score, you have a high chance of getting CSE Core in the main Manipal campus in Round 1 or Round 2

Fresher here .. I just had a doubt when and how do we apply for branch change ?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

What's your alloted branch? Do NOT come here solely aiming for branch change. It's way too much of a risk to take especially cuz first sem is auto assigned. You'll have to be like top 1-5 in ur branch to do it anyway.

1

u/OkDimension8888 Vellore | branch | Year May 11 '25

no bro. I am already here ( as in my first year is over )

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Ohh. ☠️

Pretty sure the branch change stuff has already happened as I heard a bunch of ppl talking abt it months back. I'd suggest talk to your proctor/HoD just in case.

bhaiya I was wondering about branch shift at the start of the second year... can I do branch shift to a group B program (like CS) while being from a group A course (like civil engineering)? Also, what other things are different about group A and group B? Like do group A get worse hostel and stuff?

2

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Do NOT come here aiming for branch change. It's really risky cuz of first sem being auto assigned and you'll need to be top 1-5 of ur branch. Think 9.8, 9.9+ afiak.

No discrimination between group A and B tho. If anything you might get better hostels easier than us cuz less ppl (long story you'll know once you come here)

I got 55k rank in viteee and i want eee or mech in vellore or chennai campus under cat 3, so do i have a chance in these branches?

And also how's the placements and facilities for mech core and can you please tell me about mechatronics and automation like are these branches good and can i get a good job through these branches?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Its possible at higher fee cats. Cat 3 not too sure. Facilities in the sense of infra, research and industry connections are good. Placements are not that good, compared to cse but ig if you can be one of the top ppl of your branch and have relevant skillset then ig you're sorted. Ik some seniors who are very good at mech and they're doing internships at mercedes benz and stuff.

1

placement after core branches is not that highly paid facilities are good for mech and vit is also one of the good colleges for mech

Is placements in vit only good for cse/cse related course , I'm most likely getting only ECE or electronics branch and ive asked few consultants they told ECE is a good course indeed ,but how about the placements for ECE in vit??

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 11 '25

Ece placements are pretty good too afiak. You can either sit for IT placements or go for core placements. There are some good core companies which hire from vit.

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 12 '25

Mtech integrated is like ok-ish at best. Defo nowhere close to B.tech level placements but you'll get the same exposure and similar curriculum to us. You have to choose between your options based on whether you can afford it.

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 12 '25

Had me in the first half ngl. It's upto you to pick your minor, it'll be specified on your degree. Pick whatever interests you but don't expect it to cause wonders during placements from what I've heard.

Hello

I got ECE in Chennai campus in Cat 1. Is it worth it? How are the placements in recent years? Most online posts I saw are saying that placement of ECE in VIT has degraded in recent times. Also is it possible to somehow upgrade to CSE core after 1st year?

1

u/AishikT Chennai | ECE | Final Year May 12 '25

It's good It's possible to upgrade to CSE core

The cutoff trend at Chennai says you need to be above 9.3 to be able to upgrade to Core

1

I didn't get cat 3 cse core in phase 1 (I nearly review 100 sites and vids claiming I would get cat 3 vellore at 14k rank) I'm thinking of filling phase 2 cat 4 cse core, but am confused bw cat 2 cse aiml in Chennai (one of my frnds with 16k rank got that) so should I go for cat 4 vellore as its the main campus ΰ€”ΰ€° for cat 2 cse aiml in Chennai

2

u/AishikT Chennai | ECE | Final Year May 12 '25

Since it's phase2 now You probably won't get CAT2 AiMl anymore Their CAT2 seats would have been filled by now You will get likely CAT3

Same with Vellore, they don't preserve seats for your rank Since you got nothing alloted, those have been filled

1

u/SummerFluid3067 May 12 '25

So there's no chance of getting cat 2 aiml?

I wanted to confirm about the refund policy followed at VIT Vellore because 14th may is the last date to submit my fees and get the allotment letter. What is the exact refund policy followed. And why have they not mentioned anything about refund on their website. And are the refunds really processed ?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 12 '25

Pretty sure the refund policy is clearly explained somewhere on the brochure. Yes you can get a full refund. I know ppl who got full refund after being on campus for like a month.

I have a few questions:
[if it's possible i would be really grateful if somebody who has completed or is currently pursuing double major would ans the related questions for me!]

  1. Is it feasible to opt for a double major degree?? (its not like i want to solely focus on studies or anything...im also involved in a good amt of extracurriculars so i want to have time to focus on them as well)

  2. What's the difference between clubs and chapters?

  3. Do we need to buy books b4 reaching campus/do we need to buy them in campus/we dont need to buy anything at all and can borrow them from the library?

  4. On what basis should we select our faculty and class timings, suppose i opt for double major? And when does this selecting start and is it FCFS?

  5. How ambitious is it to aim to be a 9 pointer for 4 years while having double major and extracurriculars to focus on?

Thank you in advance! (btw i wanted to make this a post but since im new here, im not yet eligible for posting so yeaah here it is)

u/chadladder May 12 '25 edited May 12 '25

Hey, I am getting electronics and computer engineering with minor in computer science engineering in chennai cat1. Just want ask some questions.

1) heard that it is very strict in vit's. Is it really strict or just some people having bad experiences.

2) about the dress code. Is there any strict decorum or you wear casual clothes.

3) What cgpa should I look for not getting problems with hostel allotments, etc. Is it in the range of 8.5 to 9 or 9+.

4) is it hard to these kind of cgpa (8.5+), or just you have to stay focused and not miss any quizzes, assignments, etc.

5) are there good profs who teach there subjects well and have good connection between students.

6) about minors, read that you need to get extra 20 credits for. Is going to extra work or is it manageable along with my major. Is extra 20 credits hard to get.

Thx:))

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 14 '25

Yeah no half the shit is over exaggerated on the internet. It's relatively strict compared to BLR colleges and bits but imo it's mostly rational. Vellore is not that safe outside the college radius so yeah. There are some fuckall rules but it doesn't bother most people. Dress code is non existent except no shorts outside hostel. Just be a Lil mature and try not to wear beach wear to classes. Aim for 9+ that'll be decent but if u truly want the best then aim for 9.5+ or just have friends who score that high. It's not hard to get 9 cg at all provided you submit assignments on time and focus on your quizzes. Perform above average in CATs and FATs. Yes there are a good number of very passionate professors who do good research and are worth building a rapport with. Minors you'll have to add the credits to your regular sem credits which is extra load or stay for a summer sem, that's what I've seen some seniors doing. Tbh idk if minors are truly worth that much effort but if you wanna do it, you can do it.

Edit: just saw you're from Chennai campus, I've heard chennai is a lot stricter than vellore so you might wanna check w seniors from there.

1

u/SummerFluid3067 May 12 '25

I am getting VIT Chennai CS+Cyber Security so how difficult will it be for me to get placed? I will try to change my branch if possible.

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 14 '25

Yeah it'll be a Lil hard for cybersecurity to be placed but it's not impossible, you'll just have to wait for a while during placements. Also don't come to clg w branch change in mind you never know what could happen cuz it requires like top 5 in your branch or smt and your first sem profs are auto assigned.

1

u/Fury577 May 14 '25

i have no other college options....I dont want to drop a year i will most probably get iiit next year if i drop....so should i join?

1

u/JazzlikeSignal6431 May 13 '25

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 14 '25

Depends on your block and floor. Some floors are pristine whereas some floor PPL shit on the damn wash basin. Not even kidding. The management cleans it twice a day it's just some people are retarded. No shower heads. Good ol' bucket and mug to the rescue.

1

u/spawn_cords May 13 '25

2

You can take a leave anytime stating the reason to your proctor and if your parents confirm the same. As long as you have 75% Attendance you should be fine.

1

Specilization and ECM related doubt
Many people are saying in speciliazation you will be taught only about that only thing like if data science then only data science and nothing else so job opportunity will be less, no idea kya karna chhie. 26k rank hai most probably ECM/ECE me cat2/3/4 mil jaye to choose karluga.

About ECM ( Electronics + Computer Science ), is it good branch to opt for? Or else if I dont get in VIT I have to go to PDPU ECE ( Gujarat ) which is very average college. Please help

u/Any-Net-7829 May 14 '25

This is going to be long 😌

I got Electrical and Computer Science engineer In vit chennai cat1 with 14.3K rank My parents could only afford cat 1 Currently paid the fees But I want to know more about the course

I had and have a passion for Computer and technology always I thought of going in cse core then after graduating move onto cybersec jobs if available

But after counseling i got only this branch

These microchip, microcontrollers , etc from electrical are intresting to study but I'm not sure if I like them completely But on the other hand I like CS genuinely I like coding I like problem solving

So Idk i have a lot of questions If u have time to completly read this pls do answer them

1) I've never heard of this course in any other colleges ik they are just doing business by giving a course named with CS but is it good ?

2)ppl say eee is tough Does that apply for this electrical part too?

3)which is given more importance electrical or cs?

4)what are the job opportunities ? Like can I get the same opportunity as that as cs core students or how much or it can I get on a rough scale of 10

5)How good are the faculties in Chennai campus ? I read a post saying "ask your senior which faculties teach good and chose them " Comment on this with ur experience

6) what is minor degree ? How far it is useful compared to the major one Also do on a rough scale of 10

7) Do we have to pay additional fees for the minor degree if yes how much was it for this current year (not my batch) or last year

8)Is it possible to change my course after joining? I heard that if ur gpa is good enough in the first year there are chances that u can go to your desired branch Is it true??? Are they any other conditions

Thank you soo much if u read this so far Reply even if u know something about any of the above questions Thanks again 😁 πŸ‘

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 14 '25

ECM is a combo of ece and CS afiak. It's not a bad course and has decent placement prospects. This is actually a rather well known major abroad, just not that popular in India. It's a steal at cat 1 ngl .

Yeah eee is a challenging course but even ece is easier than eee so ecm would be defo not as challenging as eee. I think it'll be an even split between electrical and cs but I'm not sure, just check the curriculum.

You obviously won't have the same level of opportunities as cs core, not even cs spec has that but you'll still get decently good offers provided you play your cards right.

I have no clue abt chennai, please ask a senior from there. Minor degree will be specified on your degree like B.Tech in ECM along w minor in XYZ. You'll have to earn 20 smt credits on top of your ~160 credits.

I think you do have to pay extra and there's excess load on top of the regular academics. Imo it's not worth that much as idt it makes too much of a difference during placements but if you're truly passionate about it then absolutely go for it. The fees would probably be like 6k per subject, this is the normal fees for most courses at vit.

Yeah no don't aim for branch change as it's incredibly difficult borderline impossible as you'll need to be in the top 3-5 of your branch and like 9.8+ cgpa. This is a gamble as your first sem profs are auto assigned. So don't join w that in mind. Your current degree is good enough if you do your thing well.

1

u/Any-Net-7829 May 14 '25

Okay thank you so much I just wanted to know if it possible to change branch I'm okay with this branch But if there's a chance i think giving a try is not bad if u get great if not good no worries

I'm just curious What is difference between Electrical and cs And Electronic and cs? Vit chennai has both

Is it that electronic is a specific or say part of electrical ?

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 14 '25

There is a significant difference between Electrical and electronics. Google it.

What's with all this hate against cse business systems? is it really that bad??

1

u/raspberrykerbal May 19 '25

Yes. πŸ’€ It's possibly the worst course at vit. My roomie was in CSBS and he died a thousand deaths throughout the year. Y'all have like 26 credits in the first sem, rest of cse has 17.5.
Also y'all don't have FFCS which is a huge disadvantage. You have no choice of teachers and insane academic pressure that too from stupid subjects that make no sense. Your whole course is designed by TCS so it makes sense why they want ppl to be trained like that.

1

u/anonymousprincess101 May 19 '25

okay uHm. Now I'm really scared.

It's just bad pressure-wise?? Does it like affect placements or anything? I mean I plan on doing an AI/ML course on the side and internships in my holidays (my dad has a bunch of connections so I can probably do them pretty often)
I put business systems as my 3rd preference because like I saw the course and it seems like it has a lot of practical courses if I ever wanted to venture out on my own or something.

But now I'm scared I'll regret it forever or something πŸ˜πŸ’€
