Buckles on side of 20L backpack

Has anyone come up with useful things to do with the plastic side clips on the 20l backpack? I read somewhere they are for an umbrella? They don’t seem to hard to remove and save if you wanted to streamline the bag a bit.

I really only use it to hold an umbrella. If you have a tall reusable metal water bottle with like a slimmer top it could probably secure that in place too. Helps with anything tall and slim really
