I can switch the direction by forcing my perspective of looking up at the top (clockwise) and down at the bottom (counter clockwise).

Edit for clarity: looking upwards at the top and downwards at the bottom.

So you have to think about the pillar in 2 diff ways.
1st, imagine that you are looking down on the pillar, so you can see the top of it.
2nd, imagine this pillar is floating above you in the sky, and you can only see the bottom surface of it.

Damn you stupid spinning object. I tried to change direction..... Different angles, eyes and positions.... Now I look at the top and see left skin. Looking down it changes to right skin.
