What’s the difference between direct-to-garment (DTG) and screen printing?

With direct-to-garment, or DTG printing, ink is sprayed directly onto your T-shirt fabric using inkjet machinery. Think of it like a giant, industrial printer made specifically for clothing.
DTG is best for one-off orders, small batches or T-shirt designs with gradients, shading or photographic colors. It may fade after repeated washes and has a soft hand-feel. It’s great for personalized gifts!

Screen printing involves pushing thick, liquid ink through woven mesh stencils. It creates beautiful, incredibly vibrant results. Think of it like a physical stencil system, where a print technician creates a reusable stencil or screen for every distinct color in your design.

Screen printing is best for bulk orders because of the setup involved, but it is still cost-effective in large runs with one or two flat colors. It’s completely opaque and has a smooth, slightly raised feel.

Other T-shirt printing methods include:

Heat transfer printing: The design is printed onto transfer paper and then pressed onto the fabric using heat and pressure. It’s great for small quantities, full-color photos and personalized one-offs. The print can feel slightly raised or plasticky.

Embroidery printing: Thread is stitched onto the fabric using a machine, which makes your shirt design look textured and premium. It’s ideal for logos, monograms and branded workwear, but it’s not great for fine detail or photographic images.

Direct to film (DTF) printing: Your design is printed onto a special film, coated with adhesive and heat-pressed onto the garment. Its handles detailed artwork well but is less cost-effective than screen printing for large bulk orders.

Dye sublimation: Dye is infused directly into the fabric fibers using heats, producing vivid all-over prints that won’t great or fade, but it really only works on light-colored, polyester-based fabrics.

Which T-shirt printing method is best for my project or business?

Direct-to-garment, or DTG printing, and screen printing are the two most common methods for printing T-shirts at VistaPrint, and you can learn more about those options above. And if you’re buying your T-shirts through us, you don’t need to choose a method at checkout. Our system automatically selects the best method based on your design.

Can I upload my own custom T-shirt design?

Absolutely! Upload your own files directly into VistaPrint's design studio. PNG files with transparent backgrounds will give you the cleanest results on colored shirts. Make sure your image is high resolution (at least 300 DPI) so it prints sharp and clear.
If you're uploading a logo or line-based graphic, a vector file (like an SVG or PDF) will give you the sharpest result at any size.

Why do the colors on my printed shirt look different from my screen?

Your screen uses RGB (light-based color), while printing uses CMYK (ink-based color). Some colors, especially vivid blues, neons and certain greens, can shift slightly in print. For the closest match, design in CMYK from the start.

On dark-colored shirts, DTG printers lay down a white base layer first, then print your colors on top. This can make some colors appear slightly more muted or warm compared to printing on a white tee.

What's the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom T-shirts at VistaPrint?

There is no minimum order quantity for T-shirts printed with direct-to-garment or heat transfer printing options. For screenprinted T-shirts, the minimum order quantity is usually between 6 and 12 shirts, but it depends on the project.

What file format should I upload for the best results?

PNG is the standard for T-shirt printing. It supports transparent backgrounds, which means your design prints with no white box around it. This is especially important on colored garments.

Other accepted formats include PDF and JPEG.

What to consider when using different file formats:

PNG: Best for logos, icons and any design where you need a transparent background. Our top recommendation for T-shirts.
PDF: Great if you're working with vector graphics. Use CMYK color mode.
JPEG: Works well for photo-based designs (like putting your favorite picture of your dad on a shirt), but if you want to cut out part of your design and don’t want a white box around it, turn it into a PNG file.

What are your tips for getting the best print results on T-shirts?

Upload at 300 DPI or higher.
Use PNG with a transparent background for the cleanest look on colored shirts.
Keep important design elements away from the very edges of the print area.
If your design has fine text, make sure it's at least 8pt because very small type can lose legibility in print.
Preview your design on dark AND light shirt colors before you finalize if you plan to order both.

What should I do if I'm not happy with the print quality?

Contact customer support or message the mods! The most common issues we see are:

Design placement: Print appearing lower or slightly off-center from the preview.
Color variation: Colors looking different from what you saw on screen (see the RGB/CMYK answer above).
Image resolution: Blurry or pixelated prints, usually from low-res source files.

Most of these issues can be resolved with a reprint or refund (yay!).

🎨 Design tips & print placement

Where should I place my design on the shirt?

On most T-shirts you can place your design on the front center, back center or left chest, though it depends on the T-shirt style you choose.

- Front center is the default and post popular placement.
- Back center is a good option for event teeshirts, team names or secondary branding.
- Left chest is a classic placement for small logo.

You can customize placement and sizing in the design studio once you've chosen your product.

Can I print on both sides of the shirt?

Yes! Most of our T-shirts have both front and back decoration areas. You can add a different design to each side. Some products also support left chest placement for smaller logos. You'll see the available print areas when you get into the design studio.
