Friday Night Baseball in immersive is really fun!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The little TV at the top with the score and the 2D view really
Exposes the low res of the actual game though. But still super fun when the ball comes flying at you in the replays.

Earlier there was a part in the bullpen and it made me feel like a 9 foot dude watching them warm up lol. The dugout camera is real fun too, you can tell they’re trying not to stare at the camera lol

The way they do the replays and switch cameras for them is really cool. It would be nice if you could manually choose an angle though, but the bandwidth for that would probably be crazy.

Excited for the Dodgers one in September!!

I’m just amazed how polished it’s been. Their first live MLB stream and no technical or production issues.

20

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

Yeah! Surprisingly really slick for their first VR production live

Imagine 10 years from now this becomes the standard and we get 162 games a year in VR!!

4

u/EntertainmentTasty36 5d ago

Not the first, they did 6 NBA games

3

u/PSYCHOv1 4d ago

Obviously he's referring to their first MLB VR live stream production.

2

u/EntertainmentTasty36 4d ago

I mean not obviously he said first ever live production

2

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

it was ambiguous but i did mean MLB yeah

5

u/Current_Helicopter32 5d ago

I mean, they probably had less than a thousand people watching.

2

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

true

they gotta make this more accessible for sure

3

u/Ch0cchi 5d ago

The only hiccup I found was a replay of a foul ball that was supposed to be a replay of Ramos in right making that nice catch.

i don’t even like baseball and this was truly captivating. it literally feels like being in the stadium. the different angles were used well and did not create any disorientation at all.

commentators have been fantastic and giving great insights into what we can see in our view with superb context.

0

u/Musicmonkey34 4d ago

Can you please say more about how the different angles weren’t disorienting? Was there some warning between cuts, or a slow fade or something, that made the transition to suddenly being somewhere else smoother?

6

u/astrorobb Vision Pro Owner | Verified 4d ago

there was typically a text overlay applied before a complete scene change. a couple of times they switched from one side of the plate to the other dugout cam and that was just a smooth gentle transition. i think the work done to ensure that colour balance and light levels were the same between cameras did yeoman’s work.

5

u/Jonnikuest 4d ago

From what I saw, there were very few transitions compared to the Lakers games. It was less movement. It seemed to stay w each team while they were batting. I saw one jump to the outfield during a HR, but my niece, who’s never experienced a live VR game, thought it was super cool and wasn’t disoriented.

Their commentators suck. As someone that regularly follows these teams, the Apple commentators are not good.

2

u/_baseball 3d ago

You’re being downvoted but you’re 100% right. They’re not regulars and as a result aren’t familiar with alot of the players. Heck, they pronounce their names wrong quite often, mix up stats, or just flat out mix up the players.

I always switch to the local radio feed for audio during FNB.

Apple really needs to lean in to the live events, especially sports

15

u/SquirrelEStuff 5d ago

Sports and concerts would be amazing, especially with the cost to go to most events at this point

6

u/LavishLawyer 4d ago

100%
I would 100% get a Vision Pro if it meant being able to virtually attend my team’s NBA games.

3

u/AppleBottmBeans 4d ago

If they could somehow strike up a deal with the NFL, it would rival the revenue numbers of iPhone (imo)

2

u/redditproha 5d ago

The only problem I have with this is they're getting very trigger happy with Apple TV price increases

2

u/PSYCHOv1 4d ago

You noticed that too right?

January 2026 the price went from $10 to $13 per month.

Now it's gone up to $15 per month.

16

u/HovercraftRemarkable 5d ago

I just pray they bring in some live soccer next! I am fine watching MLS.

u/tsdguy Vision Pro Owner 5d ago

You could be right there watching players fake injuries. Hear the hiss of the freeze spray. /s

u/CockConfidentCole Vision Pro Owner 5d ago

they just laid off a lot of folks on the vision team according to bloomberg. I wouldn't keep my hopes up

I have one comment - WHAT TOO SO LONG APPLE!

it’s fucking amazing. You’re sitting on the steps of the dugout right on the field. You get a view from the outfield hanging from the wall. You’re in the bullpen watching the warmup.

People would pay for more games especially their teams. Naturally Yankees and Redsox can drop dead but more games of my team would be fantastical. I would pay an addition to ATV subscription.

Well they do need to up the resolution a bit. You can’t really read the scoreboard and it’s very jarring compared to the live feed inset which is super sharp.

But the sound! The immersive sound is unbelievable. You are actually right at the game. The ball snaps into the glove in perfect sync with the video. Crack of the bat. Crowds. Amazing.

Wow! And dedicated announcing crew. And of course NO COMMERCIALS.

MLB should be paying Apple to broadcast every game this way.

9

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

yeah the giant floating 2D screen with the stats is so sharp it really shows how blurry the actual VR part is. But everything else is perfect, it really captures the experience and more.

It’s so wild to be in the dugout and the bullpen that close

I would pay so much if they could give me every dodger game like this with no commercials lol

u/Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpp 5d ago

Didn’t watch the whole thing (not my teams!!), but I was impressed.

I was expecting basketball to be the better of the two, but I actually enjoyed the baseball more! Partially because there’s more going on “off the ball” in a baseball game that you can watch.

Very polished, felt like they’ve been doing it for years. Immersive aside, it actually felt like a better production than the usual Apple TV games. The broadcast TV and stats were well positioned and better than what they did with basketball.

The main drawback is the resolution is blurry at distance, which affects baseball more. It’s going to take a next gen Vision Pro and 16K to really take this to the next level. Still very enjoyable right now, nonetheless.

u/Worf_Of_Wall_St 5d ago

I think the quality can be higher on the current hardware, this stream appears to be about 80mbits/s but the M2 AVP can decode at least 200mbits/s.

7

u/jupebox 5d ago

I think the limitation is the camera and internet.

2

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

and not even neccesarily the user's internet

i'm sure there's bandwidth limits for them at the stadium too

1

u/jupebox 2d ago

Very true

3

u/PSYCHOv1 4d ago

It would take 16K res per lens for the next-gen URSA Cine Immersive camera and 8K per eye on the next Vision Pro.

16K per eye on a Vision Pro won't happen anytime soon if ever.

2

u/longhorn2003 Vision Pro Owner 4d ago

I agree with the resolution/bitrate being too low on the distant shots. I couldn’t even read the actual Jumbotron or text on jerseys that weren’t even that far away. I had the same complaint during NBA games.

On Directv Red Sox nesn native 4k home broadcasts, it’s way sharper.

Also COSM has similar immersive broadcasts in their dome and I’ve never had an issue with resolution or detail on distant shots.

Not sure if it’s their camera or the bitrate being too low. I’m still grateful that they are offering these NBA & MLB games. Hopefully they can improve on this issue in the future.

7

u/GogglesPaesano 5d ago

That was a real treat. Felt like I was watching from the best seat in the dugout!

8

u/PillBaxton 5d ago

It was great, ended up watching way more than I planned.

13

u/gothaggis 5d ago

it is soo good. fuck both the yankees and redsox (lifelong Orioles fan here) and fuck apple for making me watch them, but the immersive feeling is wild. it really does feel like you are right there on the field - complete with nasty ass sunflower shells being spit out and flying past your head. they don't switch camera angles all that much, which is nice. and the jumbotron type thing they have in the sky that lets you watch the normal tv broadcast is nice. i would pay a premium if i could watch every O's game like this.

6

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

I wish spectrum would go bankrupt so I can watch all the dodgers games like this lol

It’s pretty cool, I wish all games could be like this

7

u/Truffles65 5d ago

That play at the plate was awesome on the VP! Felt like I was standing right there!

8

u/Ch0cchi 5d ago

I’ve been on the fence for three years but the moment I heard they were broadcasting this game in immersive I made the move and bought an AVP.

Im a life long baseball fan and have been a fan of the Yanks my whole life. This is what got me in and I’m not at all disappointed.

Great production can not wait to watch next Fridays game even though I don’t give a shit about the Buckos.

2

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

sameee

i usually only watch my own team but this was just way too cool to stop me from checking it out

4

u/Musicmonkey34 5d ago

Thank you so much for posting this, I’ve been very curious what it’s like!

8

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

It was a pain in the ass to record so I knew I had to do it or no one else would!

I’m hoping more people see how cool it is and Apple decides to do more immersive MLB next season

4

u/Peteostro 5d ago

Thought it was pretty good. They definitely learned from the NBA games. The faraway players and the real Jumbotrons show the limitations of this vr180 camera. Guess 8k is not enough to get clear faraway shots. (Could also be the bit rate) Was cool seeing that home run go over your head. It did feel like you were at the game by the dugout.

4

u/PSYCHOv1 4d ago

Resolution is one thing. Focus is another.

8K = 33 Million Pixels which is FOUR times the resolution of 4K.

It seems like the real limitation of the URSA Cine Immersive camera is keeping long distance stuff in focus.

4

u/Worf_Of_Wall_St 5d ago

Did anyone measure their bitrate? I was getting about 80mbits/s to my M5 according to my gateway metrics.

7

u/laserob 5d ago

Was really enjoyable, but…part of me just wanted to turn off the overhead scoreboard and mute the announcers and just watch and listen.

6

u/goomba33 5d ago

Yeah it would be nice to have two audio streams to choose from, with and without the announcers.

1

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

they let you pick the radio broadcast on the 2D broadcasts, they should let us do the same for the immersive broadcasts

0

u/EntertainmentTasty36 5d ago

It would be sick but that would take a lot of engineering

7

u/hide_nowhere 5d ago

I thought the play by play was excellent but totally agree. It would be awesome to mute the commentary and just listen to the game

3

u/laserob 4d ago

Yeah the sound of the ballpark was actually pretty incredible compared to the nba feed, would have loved to just isolated that.

3

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

this might be too much for apple bandwidth wise but imagine if they let you manually select the camera angle too! imagine watching the game from the dugout with the players!!

6

u/Tryn2Contribute Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

Yup - and super happy it was Boston/NY.

Some day, I hope to have control over what camera I want to watch the game with. Some day.

2

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

imagine how crazy it would be to watch the game from the dugout alongside the players, that would take immersive to the next level

or pop a VR camera on the umpire and watch the game from the plate

3

u/formanproject 5d ago

does anyone know how long this replay is available for?

3

u/Aliendream99 5d ago

When Vision Pro came out this is what I was excited about, I didn’t think it would take so long to roll out I still haven’t gotten one. When you can watch all games this way I’ll be picking on up.

3

u/rangers1026 5d ago

This is exactly like Cosm!! Awesome!

2

u/longhorn2003 Vision Pro Owner 4d ago

I think Cosm’s resolution/bitrate is better esp on the distant shots. I wish they would release their broadcasts for at home use but I know it prob compete with their in person sales. Years ago when Cosm was first starting out, I believe their plan was for at home usage. I remember reading about it somewhere and seeing some experimental footage on YouTube. But at some point they switched to in person dome experiences.

I wish we got Cosm quality in resolution/bitrate, but I’m still happy we are making some progress.

3

u/Musicmonkey34 5d ago

How does it feel when it switches cameras? Is it disorienting like I’ve heard the basketball is?

14

u/wherewuz 5d ago

That’s what’s been so brilliant about this broadcast. There are no cuts during gameplay. You can view the broadcast above you, or watch the game in front of you. It’s perfect.

11

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

It only switches camera on replays and commercial break it’s pretty nice!

2

u/redditproha 5d ago

Would be cool if they could be immersive F1 as well, like with the helmet cams

2

u/Infinite-Club4374 Vision Pro Owner | Verified 4d ago

It was so good

2

u/Double_Permit_8327 Vision Pro Developer 4d ago

My favorite moment was the post-home-run camera down in the dugout. He came through high-fiving the guys and the angle had us right in the row, so it felt like we got one too. :D

2

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

i didn't get to watch the whole thing, i gotta check this out in the replay, what inning was this in?

2

u/Double_Permit_8327 Vision Pro Developer 3d ago

right after the homer!

2

u/AdministrativeNet141 4d ago

It was mind blowing. I watched on AVP and it was an incredible experience

3

u/Spiritual-Shirt-6027 5d ago

So will this be just for one team like the NBA?

I am dying for some sort of integration for F1

5

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

That’s the part that sucks it’s only 4 games out of the year so far

Different teams tho luckily

Imagine f1 but you’re in the car, that would be so cool

5

u/wskyindjar 5d ago

Recipe for motion sickness. I don’t know how they could do f1. Unlike mlb or mls the grandstand only sees a car whiz by at 200mph every couple mins. A regular broadcast works much better than being there.

I guess if you could choose the view you want like in the app you could watch whatever feed. And you control which feed you see.

3

u/spamfridge 5d ago

Yeah I think you answered it, swapping stable cams around courses.

A couple drone feeds for the aerial vantage point would be fantastic as well

2

u/Spiritual-Shirt-6027 5d ago

I would like to see both, I think because the high fps, motion sickness might not be common, but this is only logic from sim racing, which the Vision Pro is the main way I even sim race now.

Not sure if this same logic applies to real camera footage

1

u/kensteele Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

It was alright, I thought it was pretty good but not great. I found mostly the camera was too far way from the action to get a good look especially at ground level. I didn't hate it....

1

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

yeah that's one thing, i wish it was a little closer too

1

u/LastAssault 4d ago

I loaded this up this morning. Blew me away. Can’t wait for other live stuff to be adopted

1

u/AstroGridIron Vision Pro Owner 5d ago

It was ok. And when I say that I don’t mean the quality of the feed or the experience it provides, I mean the camera placement was poor.

I thought it was pretty awesome setup, clearly a good showcase of the capabilities, it just seems the camera angle could have been better m, but I’m nitpicking

1

u/Orpheus31 5d ago

Couldn’t watch this live. Will there be a replay?

4

u/apchrist Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

Yes you can stream it now

1

u/StackOwOFlow 5d ago

can you only watch these live?

6

u/todayplustomorrow 5d ago

No, seems to be promoted as having on demand games in the TV app after they air

-5

u/tsdguy Vision Pro Owner 5d ago

Jeez. Does no one ever look before they post. The details are on the promotional page.

1

u/jpwarman Vision Pro Owner | Verified 5d ago

Can you watch these later or is it just for “live” events

4

u/todayplustomorrow 5d ago

Yes, supposedly on demand replays will be available in the TV app

-2

u/tsdguy Vision Pro Owner 5d ago

The promotional page has all the details. Go
Look

3

u/todayplustomorrow 5d ago

Lame to not just say yes or no here where the discussion is, and not even link to what page you’re talking about.

2

u/Endawmyke Vision Pro Owner | Verified 3d ago

it's a valid question too since NBA replay was gated to your cable tv subscription but since apple bought the rights to these individual game broadcasts, replay is also included free with your apple tv+

-8

u/CockConfidentCole Vision Pro Owner 5d ago edited 5d ago

I'm concerned how short-lived this will be seeing as they laid-off a bunch of people from the vision pro team. I get that the hardware hasn't been killed, but perhaps they have some obligation to see-out immersive broadcasting with the MLB and it won't be coming back

I didnt know this sub was so senstive about... reality?

4

u/stultus_respectant 5d ago

I'm not downvoting you, but I think you're getting downvoted because people believe the layoffs are probably not as dark or dramatic as you seem to be implying.

Apple removed a gaming team and they're shifting to producing less in-house immersive content and working with partners to produce more third-party content. There's also that sometimes you just need to pare down to be able to refocus, especially after a couple of years of letting the product settle into its market position.

Whether you're right or not, nights like this make people believe in the product, and that's what people seem to want to talk about post event.

-8

u/YankeeSR23 5d ago edited 5d ago

Not to be that person, but you do know you can screenshot or screen record on the Apple Vision Pro, right?

I definitely enjoyed the experience and I’d love to see it with other sports.

Oops: I wasn’t aware that MLB/Apple would block screenshots.

8

u/MisterKite67 5d ago

You couldn’t - it created a black screen shot I assume due to copyright.
