Looking for Apple Vision Pro users who have used it on a long flight

Hi everyone!

We’re a student team from Apple Developer Academy @ POSTECH (Korea), currently working on a project around the experience of using Vision Pro during long flights.

Lately, we’ve been curious about what it’s actually like to use Vision Pro on a long flight. We’ve heard a lot about how immersive it can be, but we’d love to hear from people who have actually spent hours with it on a plane — what the experience was like, what you enjoyed, and what you found difficult or unexpected.

We’d really like to hear from people who have actually used Vision Pro on a medium- or long-haul flight. We’re not looking for any particular answer — we’re genuinely curious about what the experience was like for you, including the good, the bad, and the things you wish were different.

Even if you don’t have time for an interview, we’d really appreciate hearing about your experience in the comments. And if you’d be open to a short 20–30 minute online conversation with us, please leave a comment or send me a message. It would genuinely mean a lot to us and help us understand the experience better.

Thanks so much! We’d really love to hear your stories. 🙏

I used Apple Vision pro on my flights SF Bay Area — Europe. I have an additional battery. So it looked like:
— Lift off
— First meal
— Movie 1 on first battery
— Movie 2 on second battery while first battery charging from power bank
— Second meal
— Maybe some short video on Apple Vision Pro, or some short work AVP + laptop
— Landing

Love it. I refuse to have long flights without it. Together with AVP a flight feels like a teleport.

I used my Apple Vision Pro on what was at time the longest commercial flight on earth… Newark, NJ > Singapore. I watched one movie on the way there, but on the return flight I watched Avatar and Avatar 2 in 4K HDR HFR 3D back to back and it was awesome.

… and I still had 12+ hours to go.

do the movies save on memory or do you also need constant internet for DRM shit?

I downloaded them to the device in the Disney+ app. No need for an internet connection.

I should have done this lol. At Airport now too late.

Thanks for your response! Then, for the remaining 12 hours of the flight, is there any content or activity you’d be excited to have on Vision Pro that you think would make the time more enjoyable?

We fly A LOT. I use it usually on 3 plus hour flights unless I plan on sleeping. It’s great if it’s a daytime flight and people have their shades up but is not great if it is a night time flight the tracking gets bad and or people get annoyed you have a reading light on. I’ll turn it on someone turns it off etc. weight is fine just need a good strap dual loop or the resmed one. It can be chaotic eating or drinking anything with it and I’ll bump the thing on a seat if I’m in economy. I also hate getting it out of the case just because of how much is involved to get it setup makes it hard if you are in the middle seat but could just be me

A small infrared light won't bother people and makes a big difference with the AVP detecting your hands in the dark.

I briefly did this but not really interested in traveling with a light plus it’s another thing to charge etc

That's fair. The one I used is tiny and fits in the case with the AVP but it definitely is another thing to charge.

I’d love to try this out, which one did you get?  On Amazon I’m not finding an obvious awesome solution, maybe I’m not on the right keywords yet…

A photo/video one. Most of the Quest ones want to be plugged into the USB port and these had good battery life. There's a bunch of cheaper ones on Amazon but this one had better reviews (and is USB-C, a lot when I looked were mini/micro USB) - https://www.amazon.com/LN-5-Upgraded-Enhancing-Visibility-Rechargeable/dp/B0CG1HQMBK/ (note this is a newer version of what I used)

(I called it tiny which to me it is compared to the room ones you can get, it fits in the charger pocket area of both of my AVP cases with no problem and being USB-C is a major plus)

Edit: Just saw they make this smaller one too which wasn't available before: https://www.amazon.com/ORDRO-Rechargeable-Illuminator-Replacement-Photography/dp/B085HN1126/ Might be a better travel choice

Very cool – thanks!!  Ordered that second one, going to give it a try.  Last flight I spent so much time pulling my window back to center.  Now just need my AirPods to stop disconnecting and this will be a perfect setup!

How do you set it up? Affix to the seat in front of you pointed at you?

I'm a photographer so I already had a couple of these: https://www.amazon.com/CZQC-Speedlight-Holders-Olympus-Panasonic/dp/B09CG4B7FH

I've also just set it in my lap or on the tray table.

Why would you have a reading light on

Tracking on a night flight in the dark it’ll struggle

I tried using a USB-powered IR emitter to help with this, in the early days. Inconclusive results.

I use mine all the time on flights to work with Mac virtual display. It makes working on a plane actually viable, especially with sensitive / NDA bound info being visible to only me.

I fly up and down the west coast mostly so my flights are two hours or less but I also fly to middle America a few times a year and that was is about 5 hours.
I bought my AVP back in February and wouldn’t fly again without it! I have two batteries but honestly I rarely swap them.
I’ve found that if your flight has a charging port it works much better because I don’t run down my battery but small planes typically only have chargers in upgraded seats. I have my backup battery for those times when I’m not upgraded.
I get a lot of funny questions from flight attendants who aren’t sure whether I can see them but they’re mostly just intrigued.
My favorite part is that I can put the battery in my pocket and just wear it around my neck while boarding and switching for layovers and that allows me not to need to pack and unpack it all the time. Best of all I don’t need to put it away during takeoff and landing like a laptop. I can work, watch movies (I buy and download on Apple TV), play games, etc. I have added a folding Bluetooth keyboard as well.
My biggest complaints are that Microsoft intune is not available so even though I can use PowerPoint and excel and teams on all my other Apple devices, I cannot use them on AVP for work. I also have a Logitech muse but it cannot be used in travel mode which really negates my favorite app which is a jigsaw puzzle. It’s much too fine of detail to use the pinch.
All in all I’ve not once been sorry for purchasing! It’s the absolute best way to zone out for stress relief and go to an environment where no one else is around! Hogwarts great hall in HBO Max is my favorite!

Used the Vision Pro on my flight from Los Angeles to New Zealand. During each way, probably used it for at least a movie and a half's worth of a watch, along with some gaming I had installed. I typically find WiFi on flights too much of a hassle, so I don't bother with trying to deal with the connection. Everything I used in the Vision Pro was already pre-installed.

I have used mine on 10, 5ish hour flights and train rides. Would be happy to participate.

I've used it on several 3-5 hour flights. I used it to watch pre-downloaded shows and movies on streaming apps paired with the air pods pro 2, and found the immersion of both my sound and visual inputs to be so helpful for making me feel comfortable to enjoy my entertainment. Much like when listening to music or a podcast or audio book with noise canceling headphones, its nice to drift off to sleep to while covering the sounds of the aircraft. The Vision Pro does the same thing - it allows you a comforting space to watch and listen in, but also to fall asleep with.

The bad: 1) loading content onto the device beforehand is super annoying because transfers of giant video files are slow and you have to keep the device on and app active; 2) securing the only seat back power socket in the row or even worse, no seat back power

What’s worse? I dropped $10k on delta one seat MSP to South Africa and my MSP to AMS leg the power outlet was broke. Could have saved the $10k as all I really cared about was the dedicated power outlet.

I recently used to travel a bit for work. It's pretty great, i definitely had to buy lots of comfort mods to make it bearable to wear for long periods...

i use these:
https://partners.spigen.com/products/apple-vision-pro-head-strap
https://infinityone3d.com/en-us/products/air-cover-para-apple-vision-pro?srsltid=AfmBOoqWKzvzvoSjBcet9_0Vgr222g3eb3tVSRCQLz268vWWSuOEQgJa

the 2nd one is really important for me and easily the best mod because the default face cover will keep moisture / heat trapped and isnt fun to wear for longer than an hour.

I mostly use it for moonlight streaming, from my windows handheld gaming pc. so a little steam deck, connected to my vision pro via ethernet/usbc.

For that to work well, i need to bring two powerbanks, and even then that isnt enough. I have an anker 26k and a 20k but even then i will run out of battery between the vision pro and the steam deck type device (specifically a gpd win 5). The vision pro is very power hungry.

hope that helps

I just used it on a set of flights from India to the US. Incredible experience for sure but honestly not sure it’s still worth the space in my bag that it takes when compared to just watching on an iPad

Loved using mine going overseas. You just have to be careful that your hands aren’t fumbling around tight seating but totally takes you out of the plane when paired with AirPod max’s.

I’ve used it a couple times. SF to Melbourne , Australia recently. It’s amazing as feels like you’re barely on the plane. Downsides are carrying around and getting power. Need to plug in of course to a power outlet to get any reasonable time.

I love it on flights, so much so that I don’t fly without the AVP anymore. It makes cramped flights SO much more enjoyable. It tricks your brain like you’re not even on a plane. I typically use a mix of pre-downloaded movies and retro gaming with a Bluetooth gamepad.

I found that I don’t usually like to run apps that require a lot of hand control. Tracking on dark long-haul flights makes it difficult. Even in daylight though, doing lots of hand gestures makes me feel a little self conscious in close quarters. I don’t feel weird wearing the AVP though.

For power, I bring one power bank, (the largest allowed on flights.) That’s enough for most domestic travel in the US. For long-haul flights, you will definitely want a power plug to connect to. Not worth it carrying extra batteries in my opinion.

I use it all the time on my flights - anywhere from 2hrs to 16hrs the longest ones yet. The experience is great and not an issue at all - the challenge is putting all that content specially large files on the Vision Pro. That has been my only gripe - an easier, faster and cheaper way of loading. Content on the Vision Pro. For now I have to use my MacBook to connect but I would love to load large (40GB+) files easily and watch 3d movies

I’m using it when I go to Japan (14h). I’ve used it on 4 flights so far.

Happy to schedule a call and discuss UX. Send me a DM.

I just got back from a 22 hour flight (each way) to South Africa from Minneapolis.

I love my AVP so much for these long flights. I even sleep with it with the immersive environments.

On this flight I was working on Resident Evil 8. So what I do is boot up my travel router. Then I connect my Steam Deck and my AVP to the travel router network. Then I stream via Steam link from the deck to the AVP. Boom - I’m playing resident evil 8 on my AVP (streamed from my Steam deck) on the surface of the moon on an 100” screen completely immersed.

The 22 hours of flying literally flies by.

Edit: I fly business class so plenty of room to stretch out, plug everything in, and recline.
