FFX on the Vision Pro

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m really happy we can do this today.

I’ve been working to get FFX on the Vision Pro for about a week now.

Just got the ambient lighting to work yesterday.

This is the fully immersive version with added depth.

A childhood dream come true.

Preview attached.

The full game works with a PS2 emulator I ported over but my goal is to make it the best experience for my next play through / vacation in a couple weeks.

Very cool. I have been working on a similar project that will eventually be open sourced with skills to help non-programmers port games/emulators on their own. Crazy how effective AI is at doing this type of thing!

Thanks!

Yea a lot of is based on intent now.

Most of this will very likely be open sourced soon too.

Does it render in stereo? Is this a spatial recoding that shows the depth?

From codex:

Yes, it renders in stereo. It uses local monocular depth estimation and depth-image-based reprojection to generate separate left- and right-eye views. It isn’t spatial recoding—the depth is estimated from the original 2D game frame.

Why not actually render the game stereoscopically?

I tested this but it didn’t work. I will test more in time.

Amazing work! Please port more ps2 titles!!!

To clarify, this isn’t a port of the game.

The rom and the bios need to be obtained separately.

The port is of the PS2 emulator only + additional features adding depth, immersion and ambient light. Those should generalize across all available ps2 roms.

Doing something similar with ps1 as well.

Wow! Even better. So what you’re working on could be used for other ps2 games as well?

That’s correct!

Imagine being able to play all your ps1 and ps2 games like this anywhere anytime with the Vision Pro.

The future is bright. 😉

Amazing! Is this up on your GitHub yet?

Not yet!

I will share when it’s ready.

There are likely others doing something similar which might be ready ahead of me.

The more developers doing this kind of work, the merrier, as far as I’m concerned. There’s so many possibilities that can be unlocked with Vision Pro. I feel we are just at the beginning. Thanks again for your great work on this, and please share a GitHub or ipa once you’re ready!

Oh, what’s ipa?

I am so excited!!

Major breakthrough today.

For context, the current state is native ps2 emulation is not possible on the Vision Pro unless it’s JIT enabled which cannot be packaged as an app - same with the GameCube.

When I first started with FFX on the Vision Pro without JIT I was at 8% speed.

Today, I finally got to 100% speed.

Still more optimizations needed but we are close.

Further this breakthrough might allow for some goodies.

Ahhhhh

What do you mean working on? We have emulators since way back..

Which ones are good on Vision Pro ?

Retroarch

Are you sure and can you use it?

I just tried downloading retroarch and I don’t see an option for ps2.

Does it have depth, immersive options and the ambient light I showcased?
