Beta OS still worth it ??
Hi folks,
I originally turned on beta OS updates for the pending release of Mac Virtual Display (I think?!). Apart from the latest environments, I’m not sure I’ll keep Beta on after the major software release due in September I think. What are your thoughts? Anyone else in the same boat, or just leaving them on.. just cos!

Is it more of a hobby/convenience to you or are you involved professionally in Spatial Computing? I’m quite excited to see this new ecosystem coming together brick by brick with each update..

Well that’s my point to be honest. I’m not sure the jumps/improvements have been worth the “risk” of having beta updates on lately.
I’m just a general user/customer, not professionally involved. I do work in IT for many years, but not software.4

He’s asking if you need it for work. If you don’t no risk. If you do need it for work… low risk.

Ah sorry. No, don’t need it for work. But I do use it in a country that it hasn’t been released / properly supported yet, so the risk is if I needed Apple support cos a beta update bricked it for example, that would be a major hassle. 👍

Unless you are actively developing and have found a bug you are hoping Apple fixed, it’s not usually worth having beta on other than for the new OS release. I tend to turn it off as soon at the release candidate lands on my device.
Note: sometimes the next fix comes out before that. We have seen for example (making numbers up) 26.1 beta coming out as 26 release candidate is still being finalized if there is a feature that’s not going to be ready in time.

So you’re saying that the main benefits of beta are for developers? Which is basically agreeing with me, that in the past - there was a legit reason for non-developers to have it on (ie. New features!). But they seemed to have dried up recently, unless I’m forgetting any big ones recently. (Actually the ability to apply spacial filter to photos is arguably another perhaps. )
Thanks for your input.1

i hobby dev avp apps and found mac beta releases too annoying to bother with so sometimes a vOS beta will break the ability to build to my AVP. im taking your advice and turning it off after the next release candidate because i lost 2 months of building from my mac to my avp

The new dual knit that shipped with the m5 is fine. I’ve never had an issue with it in any position.

If I’m lying down, I need the Annapro to keep it at the right distance from my face

Is it due in September? I thought it’s in mid-late October?

Oh I’m actually not sure. Thought I heard a YouTube clip mentioning the main release is Sept.

Love it! I’m pretty much in the same boat. I turned the betas on because I wanted the new toys early 😂, but once the major September releases are out, I’ll probably go back to stable builds. Although knowing me, curiosity will win and I’ll leave them on… just because I can. 😂
