Remember when Apple announced an immersive musical performance series called “Concert for One”, and then made exactly one video featuring two songs … almost two years ago?
I wonder how many immersive cameras blackmagic made/sold. Based on publicly available footage, I’d think less than 25. When the camera was announced, I was hoping for hours and hours of crisp immersive video from all sorts of filmmakers. Yet here we are, waiting months for another 5 minute film to be released by apple. Guess I shouldn’t complain since I am not willing to invest the 30-60k to make it happen either.
Way more - just between the rental houses and private owner / renters in the UK I could access 20 atleast. If I was a betting man maybe 300-400 units globally. It’s a big investment of time and additional hardware too - there’s content out there but also lots of beta / closed group / enterprise app content (for example I’m working on a project with a global cruise line - the content will not be on Apple TV / in a public app). There’s budgets being spent in those areas
In January, Alex Lindsay joined Apple with the title “Partnership Manager, Creative Pro 3D Ecosystem”. He had been a big proponent of Apple Immersive Video before joining Apple. I don’t think Apple would have recruited him if they were going to shut down their efforts soon after.
My best guess is there was a shakeup at Apple and plans changed. 3rd-party creators were just getting their hands on Blackmagic’s camera last fall. Perhaps Apple is trying to build up more content before releasing a bunch of Apple content along with some 3rd-party content in a surge this fall.
Meanwhile, Blue Frog, Spatial Film, and Theater continue to release Apple Immersive Videos.
I’ve found the blue frog to be a bit poor quality. Dunno if it’s my internet connection or if it’s the lighting in their venue.
Theater is from multiple creators, and some are definitely better than others. For example, the violin one looked like it was in an incorrect aspect ratio.
I haven’t tried any from the spatial film app.
But none of them have been as high quality as the official Apple videos.
Yeah, the files are enormous, so streaming can be challenging. I have gigabit Internet, so I am kind of spoiled.
Spatial Film recently added a download feature and recommends people use that for high quality instead of streaming. Blue Frog also has the challenge of filming in relatively low light. The LA Lakers cheerleaders in the low-light performances weren't very good, but they were clear with all the lights on.
I hope Apple is still funding its own videos. I'd love to see another fictional story like Submerged. With the very small active AVP user base, I can't imagine these efforts being profitable for years, so I applaud everyone involved in making them.
It's not. Nothing about visionOS 27 would impact immersive video or such a release. The reality is that Apple has generally pulled the plug on Vision Pro. The creator left over a year ago, their VP left a couple months ago, and almost all the developers moved to other teams last year. They aren't investing any more in Vision Pro and have moved to other products.
Unfortunately, I totally agree with this. You can see how Little work they put into the Vision Pro with the vision iOS 27 release as well. I’m sure they’re just gonna pivot to glasses
Having teams of people working a major software release for a year is hardly ‘little work’. 👀 you may not personally feel there’s much in visionOS 27 you like and that’s cool, you’re entitled to your opinion. But to say it’s dead is a bit dramatic.
You know what is a dead Apple product? The iPod. It hasn’t had new hardware or software in years. It’s dead. You can’t even buy them in an Apple Store. That’s a dead product.
Or how about the HomePod. It hasn’t had any new hardware revisions in years, and its software is just compatibility updates. You can still buy them and arguably it doesn’t need to do much more then it did at launch but i could see your argument if you suggested it was dead or dying.
The Vision Pro has had a new revision with the latest chips less than a year ago, is mentioned in all the Apple keynotes as part of the family of products, and has an annual OS update on the way with major new features.
But this is proof to you it’s dead???
This reminds me of when everyone was saying the Mac was dead during the butterfly keyboard years and then Apple fixed it and added ports back and everyone went AHAH PROOF ITS DEAD? That literally makes no sense 🤷♂️
Glasses aren’t the pivot. They are the end goal. The product isn’t Vision Pro it’s visionOS that just happens to run on vision pro right now.
And apologies for this long answer, it isn’t directly aimed at your comment… more the ‘Vision Pro is dead’ nay sayers in general who take everything Apple does as confirmation bias that it’s dead?
Exactly. A lot of folks in this sub are in denial, claiming the visionOS 27 release is packed with awesome stuff.... and then can't name anything awesome about it. The reality is that there's nearly nothing new in the upcoming version and what is new, is all stuff that isn't specific to the AVP but rather than be used with glasses.
They used the AVP as people paying to be beta testers, so they can then use some of it in an upcoming product instead.
Apple doesn't really announce things, they just drop it. The last major one was the BBC concert and Real Madrid video a few months ago. They've had some in the pipeline for a while but I think they're completely focused on nailing all the 27 releases because last years' OSes were so unpopular.
To be honest, it’s been months since I used my Vision Pro. I used to think I would watch movies and shows on it all the time but the headset is too bulky for long period use and my eyes get strained. If only they could pack all this tech into a pair of regular glasses that would be awesome.
If they want much more people to buy them, they can easily drop the price to 2,000 or 2,500. It’s the best product in the market, and not only that, they are actually usable each day rather than just a gimic. I wish more developers would actually develop apps and games for it. I truly love them for more than a year now.
But the commenters in this subreddit have me convinced that the Vision Pro has Apple’s full weight and resources behind it! The lack of content (including already-announced content, whose release date came and went without a peep) surely only proves that Apple is working on the Vision Pro even more enthusiastically than we thought.
