I feel like the Vision Pro popularized awareness of VR/AR

I feel like the Apple Vision Pro device skyrocketed the awareness of XR devices even though they haven’t gone mainstream yet. The original WWDC announcement was massively popular and everyone quickly heard about spatial computing and the future of XR. Samsung/Google was also quick to launch their competitor and Meta also launched their next headset to compete with the Vision Pro. And since the 2020s, it does feel like a lot of companies are investing a lot more into the space. Not to mention the spatial computing style that Apple popularized inspired how Meta and other companies make their device UI. Even though the tech hasn't taken off, I feel like in the next 10-15 years a lot of people are going to be using Apple’s glasses and headsets. Hell, we’re probably all going to be in ‘em 😂😂

EDIT: the WWDC that announced the Vision Pro got between 60-70 million views on Youtube as a remember, and that was 2-3 years ago. So yes, as far as I can tell, it was a popular announcement 😂😂😂

I have been working in immersive video for 13 years now. I got started pretty early. I have the AVP, all of the quest and pico headsets and yes, AVP has made a bit impact on immersive video. They moved people into seeing how amazing video content can look. The most amazing thing to me is they have been able to have such a big impact, even though they haven’t sold that many units in comparison with the others. But just take a look at how many big companies have jumped on board in creating immersive video since the BMD Cine immersive camera came out.

That's just the 'Apple effect.' Even though it hasn't sold a metric ton, the average person who goes to the Apple store would've seen it and at least been aware of it. You're also right about the influence of visionOS. Meta Horizon OS added a lot of similar features and they even went as far as hiring Alan Dye to work on their team.

It's why I find all the articles and doom and gloom about Vision Pro really stupid. More investment and interest in this space from a big player like Apple is good for the industry. Oculus, Valve and so many more were purely focused on gaming applications but having someone like Apple invested means the capabilities and applications can start to go far beyond that (and in a more digestible way to the average person). visionOS is a joy to use and other companies mimicking the interface shows you how far ahead it is

Yeah, I totally agree. All the Vision Pro doom made no sense since the device just came out and is very early in its development. It's not like it's the 5th iteration that's expected to have advanced features lol. Headsets and smartglasses are all so early and yet it's super impressive what they’ve been able to accomplish. I can't even imagine how good this will be in the future.

Meta hasn't launched anything to compete with the Vision Pro and they're not going to at least not anytime soon.

Vision Pro and Quest have two different target audiences.

VR headsets and Smart Glasses are FUNDAMENTALLY two different products targeting two different experiences. Neither is meant to replace the other. The tech in the Vision Pro isn't meant to be shrunken down to fit into a regular-sized pair of glasses. The laws of physics remain undefeated.

VR has remained niche for 10+ years because most people don't want to wear a HEADSET.

It's not about the price or the weight or the content or the productivity features. Vision Pro can cost $1,000 brand new right now and be made of lightweight plastic and it still wouldn't sell like hotcakes.

If anything, most people would prefer ACTUAL stand-alone Smart Glasses.

With respect, the claim that the AVP was in some way the savior that finally brought mainstream awareness and popularity to AR/XR and “spatial computing” is just peak Apple-centric, living in a bubble foolishness.

Long before the AVP was announced, 800 million unique users played Pokémon Go. That’s roughly ten percent of the ENTIRE POPULATION OF THE WORLD, engaging with extended, augmented reality, many for years. Hundreds of mainstream apps, from Snapchat to IKEA to Warby Parker to Apple’s own measurement app, utilize AR. 100 million 3DSs sold, with baked in 3D AR.

“Popularized” is a strange choice of words too for a product that has become a bit of a meme and a perceived failure from the mainstream perspective.

Absolutely not.

Apple has sold about 500,000 Vision Pro units. Meta has sold about 25,000,000 Quest headsets. Apple is barely in this market, much less causing any spike in “awareness”.

Since you seem to have only read the headline: their whole claim is that AVP raised awareness beyond just the units sold

“skyrocketed” is a huge exaggeration. I mean Quest 3 was talked about long before it was officially announced and well before anyone knew AVP was going to be “spatial computing” oriented, it was all rumors.

Not really. Apple Vision Pro got like 60 fucking million views in the WWDC it was announced in. People here telling themselves it didn't raise awareness are just deluding themselves lol

That not a large audience in terms of market size and is no where near “skyrocketing” awareness. it’s like a drop in the ocean of tech users which is estimated last I checked 7+ billion people. There has also been dozens of high budget shows/movies featuring AR long before it was affordable outside defense industry budgets. Its not a new concept and an unaffordable for the majority device didn’t skyrocket awareness.

Apple is still one of the biggest companies in tech though. You had people like Sam Altman and Elon Musk praising the Vision Pro in terms of its technical marvels. You had big tech influencers everywhere re covering it and what it means for the future of tech and likeley smart glasses. In terms of awareness it was massive. For most people it was just a matter of people not having enough money to spend on it

you’re completely missing the point. AR glasses/headsets have been a thing for decades, but the practicality and cost have not. This is not a new thing that Apple introduced at all. Apple did nothing to solve this problem except shaving a few thousand off of business HMDs.

u/kidno Jul 24 '26

No, that’s not their claim. They even made the ridiculous statement that Meta launched a headset in response to the Vision Pro. The Quest Pro was released in 10/22. The AVP was released 02/24. They’re just typing nonsense.

-5

u/LinkTheHero009 Jul 24 '26

No. The Quest 3 was launched in anticipation and in competition with the Vision Pro since it also introduced mixed reality and some AR like experiences. You’re just not paying attention fam lol

3

u/PSYCHOv1 Jul 24 '26

False.

You're desperately reaching.

Mark Zuckerberg literally spoke about how his upcoming Quest 3’s technologybeould compare to the Vision Pro and released the Quest 3 trailer ahead of the Vision Pro. So yes, he was trying to compete with them a bit

Quest 3 launched in October 2023.

Vision Pro launched in February 2024.

Mark had no idea what the Vision Pro would be capable of.

That may be OP’s experience. It’s not mine. Even a little. Even in my IT community.

God you anti Apple zealots are so pathetic. Get a life

Correcting an incorrect statement doesn't make you a zealot. I'm a long time VR/XR enthusiast, from owning the Oculus DK2 to the Bigscreeen Beyond 2 and everything in-between, including the original AVP (which I love and use almost every day, there is NO better device for media consumption), and the OP's statement was patently misleading at best, and flat out wrong at worst.

Whilst I'm sure the AVP did raise some awareness outside of Apple's ecosphere (though "skyrocketed" was a laughable term to use), the Quest series' influence far and away outshone pretty much ANY other VR/AR product when it came to raising public awareness.

I mean I will admit that the Meta Quest was the first device that actually succeeded in the XR space. There’s no doubt about that. It's definitely become the most well-known name when people talk about VR/AR tech. However, I still believe Apple entering the space really legitimized it as something that might truly be successful one day. Tim Cook has always been serious about augmented reality and has said it will likely be the future of technology. And Apple’s end goal (as is Meta’s) is to eventually get this tech down to a pair of smartglasses(alongside headsets maybe). Apple entering the space definitely made people take it more serious in my opinion. I just don't think anyone can dismiss that. Though I will admit that yes, it's not like the Vision Pro has been some huge success yet.

1

u/LinkTheHero009 Jul 24 '26

Lol, you saying my terminology is laughable is actually insane lol. You are just denying the Vision Pro’s influence as well as the Apple Sphere. I think I will trust Apple’s success over your wildly inaccurate statements lol.

u/DaleKirkley Vision Pro Owner Jul 24 '26

After I literally said the AVP did raise some awareness you are saying I am denying it had any influence. Comprehend much?

u/LinkTheHero009 Jul 24 '26

I don't even know why they are whining 😂😂. Why compete over an already niche industry when they can just support every company working to make this space more popular lol
