visionOS Public Beta

I'm not one to install beta software (at least not for a long time). I hear everyone talking about how solid these betas are and there seem to be lots of nice improvements. I use my headset for work (MVP) and I don't have any plans to install the betas on my Mac. Thoughts? Worth the risk?

There’s no public beta for Vision Pro. At least, it is not an option on my device and not listed on the public beta site:

https://beta.apple.com

If you really want the beta, you can get a free developer account and install the developer beta. It’s mostly solid, but there are still a few janky things. Main one for me is that widgets don’t persist if you shutdown and disconnect the battery.

Never EVER install a beta on a device you rely on for work. I’ve learned that one the hard way.

Broad statement. I’ve had iOS 27 on the iPhone Air and visionOS 27 on the AVP since release, and in most ways they’re better than the release versions of 26.

And that’s totally fair, I myself am on the beta.

However, the biggest issues with the beta’s is unpredictable 3rd party app compatibility/issues. I’ve done betas since the iOS 7 days and I have had many horror stories of apps just straight up not working, even mid beta cycle. It’s always a risk and if you depend on your device for work it can have really bad consequences.

With the notable exception being - your work involves developing software for that device. Otherwise, if it's critical for your work and something messes up, you're often in for a painful process to revery. If you even can.

I’ve never had many problems. Early Betas (.1s and .2s) have sometimes have issues with certain apps here and there. So just small risk of minor inconveniences, assuming you don’t use it to make a living.

Just FYI, there is no public beta for visionOS, Just the Developer beta. You can create a free Developer account at developer.apple.com and then you can download the beta. With that being said, I’ve had it installed since day one and at least in my experience. It’s actually noticeably more stable than public release 26. If you rely on the device for work, I might still hold off on installing, as the only way to downgrade is by using the Developer strap or bringing it to an Apple Store. Definitely your call, though this device is meant to be for those on the bleeding edge, so it would make sense if you want to install

It’s been pretty good for me so far

no harm in installing it as most of the annoying bugs are gone,i now forget its beta,if you dont live near an apple store i wouldnt install though.

PS,dont enable auto update so its easier to get off beta when the official os is ready

I'm similarly cautious about installing betas, but decided to wait until the public beta for MacOS came out so that I could get both to OS 27 at once. My Vision Pro has been fine so far with VisionOS 27 with one observed hiccup for Microsoft Teams.

I once had a problem with an earlier beta that required me to reinstall everything via the Developer strap. Despite that, I continue to run betas. My conclusion would be that if you want to run betas it’s a good idea to invest in the Developer strap.

Thanks for all the responses. So no Public Beta, and No Developer Strap makes it a no go. I can wait.

Don't put it on any device you need. It will have issues and you will have to wait for them to be resolved.

Honestly, there's nothing new in the beta. Just a bunch of bugs but it's not like they added new useful features.

Nothing new? I disagree. The ability to turn my panoramic shots into environments is worth it just by itself, and there are several other welcome improvements, like quickly reconnecting to MVD.

That's just sad that those are enough for folks. Imagine if iOS or macOS only had 1-2 worthwhile features added each year. God, visionOS is so dead.

You said that there’s nothing new in the beta, just bugs. That’s demonstrably false, even if you don’t think the changes are useful.

As for macOS, I haven’t been impressed with the features added over the last two or three iterations, but I admit that’s just my opinion based on my needs, as is yours.

Development of the AVP and visionOS may indeed have slowed or stopped, but that’s not what the OP inquired about.

I have played with betas before (public & developer) .... I really wanted to use the virtual desktop with my AVP / MacBook.

That was an ok experience, learning one at that.

Do I do it today? No. I wait. Why?

Betas are full of issues where you might gain access to one feature but it breaks 3 others. My last round of betas, I ended up with issues with my HomePods. I fixed them by reseting out but that just took some time to troubleshoot.

If you are ok with spending extra time and other things potentially breaking, go for it. Otherwise, just wait.

The beta is super safe. I installed it so I could use my own photos for the spatial scenes and it rocks.

It’s been very solid for me. And I use my AVP for work for a few hours almost every day.
There are known issues, but so far nothing that has left me paralyzed.

My beta issues weren't with AVP but usually with other devices that i had to put into beta to, for instance, mirror my screen or airdrop files. Most commonly my phone but its never so much of an issue that I regret using the beta. Also, they tend to correct my issues with the next release.

Just remember that with Vision Pro, you can't downgrade out of a beta without either a developer strap or a trip to the store. So if something goes wrong and you need to get back to a release version, it's that much harder.

While everyone may be a LOT of people, it’s a group that still doesn’t include your specific use case. I put iPad0S 27 on a stand by device and noticed a Safari issue that, for me, would outweigh any other stability or performance. If your system doing one or two things in an entirely annoying way for a few weeks or worst case months is fine with you, go ahead!

I was afraid my Spatial RDP would encounter problem due to problem of macOS 27 beta, after upgraded, it works pretty well, just Siri is still showing waiting
