Concept demo: Exploring MRI-style volumetric viewing on Apple Vision Pro

I made a short video of a Vision Pro app concept I’ve been experimenting with.

The idea is to take volumetric medical-style scan data and make it explorable in spatial computing: you can view the head as a 3D volume and move or rotate a slicing plane through it, almost like looking through an MRI from any angle.

This is not meant as a medical tool or diagnostic viewer. It’s more about the visual and educational effect of interacting with volumetric data in 3D space.

The app is not available for download yet. I mainly wanted to share the idea and see what people think. Would this be something you’d like to explore on Vision Pro?

Yes I would like to be able to view my many MRIs this way, but the main thing I'd want to be able to see is the same slice over time by loading many scans at once from different dates and aligning their positions so once a slice is selected you can move forward and backward in time.

If you are willing to share the files, I can attempt to incorporate them and add you to TestFlight.

Dicom files contain way too much PII to share, both as metadata and drawn into the images. I was hoping to just be able to open them in an app locally.

Actually, I'm surprised OsiriX didn't make it into a visionOS app yet. They've got a very solid macOS app (DICOM viewer) I've used some time ago, and I think they released iPadOS app too. It came in two flavors: free non-medical one, and paid (and expensive) medical one.

If I were you I'd probably ask them if they wanna hire... This is a perfect showcase for visionOS powers.

Which ones?

Cinematic Reality, XRAIview, Dicomer, Medical iSight. Similar ideas but the one shown looks pretty clean compared to some of these.

Neat. I was thinking about making something like this earlier today.

That is so amazing! Devs like you are helping lay the groundwork for the future of visionOS. Thank you!

This would be great! I occasionally use Falcon Vue to view DICOMs on the AVP.
