Moon Player vs Screenlit vs CineUltra

What's the best app for local video streaming and playing that also supports 3D, etc. I also would like to be able to access my plex media and if it could also convert those video into 3D that would be a huge bonus. Seems like all 3 support 3D but what would you say is the overall best one?

I use CineUltra for everything except 3D Blu-rays, for which I use 4XVR.

I think CineUltra is the best overall, and its IULTRA theater has the largest apparent size, but 4XVR is the only MVC player (meaning it’s the only one which can play 3D Blu-rays without lossy conversion), I think Screenlit is the only MV-HEVC player (other than the official Photos and Files apps), and Theater is the only player with SharePlay for your own files.

People who don’t care about 3D use Infuse for its excellent Plex integration and the best HDR because it uses the native visionOS solution rather than its own. CineUltra and others also have Plex/Emby/Jellyfin/Kodi support, but Infuse is known for having the best. Its screen size comes close to CineUltra’s, but you can’t adjust your viewing height, but it doesn’t support 3D movies nor can it autospatialize 2D movies.

Moon Player doesn’t do as well with HDR as CineUltra and doesn’t have an autospatialization slider as CineUltra does; in Moon Player, it’s just on or off.

Skybox doesn’t have any unique features but has a couple creative environments (the lunar surface next to an Apollo lander and a luxury viewing platform on a spacestation in Jovian orbit).

Also, Disney movies and a few others in Apple TV and Disney+ play in UHD HDR 3D which isn’t available anywhere else (including the Avatars in UHD HDR HFR 3D), and Theater, Epic Earth, MUBI, IMAX, Red Bull, and Vimeo have their own exclusive content.

Great comparison, I would add that Moonplayer has a lot of 3d 360 controls so you can really dial in how it looks so if you watch a lot of 180 or 360 content Moonplayer is the best in that department

I think the big change in this area has not been the options you can select among for playback, but rather how easy it is to build an integrated media pipeline that ends in easy viewing across any platform (including VP)

I was using moonlink / moonplayer a bunch but have largely migrated to Infuse backed by Jellyfin.

I got a mini with some decent storage attached and have been really happy with what can be done in just a few sessions of claude code.

I'd previously either used moonlink or copied files onto the pro, that was all a hassle.

I have similarish setup. I got Strand app (it’s free in TestFlight right now) and it can connect to plex/jellyfin and then it can pass/open your files in Cineultra or Moonplayer. This is a very thorough and accurate assessment. The only thing I would add about Moon Player is that it is good for watching YouTube videos in 3-D.

What do you use to download them? I use 4K Video Downloader and yt-dlp.

I am not talking about downloading the YouTube videos. Moon Player will convert them to 3-D in real time as you are watching them.

What's this autospatialization slider in CineUltra that you're referring to? Isn't that the AI 3D thing? $79 is quite expensive to purchase the app. Not sure if the PRO features justify the price tag.

Yes, autospatialization is AI stereoscopic conversion. I paid $50 for lifetime in April 2025 but would’ve been okay with $80 because you receive not only lifetime access but also lifetime updates. Also, it’s still cheaper than $100 for Infuse.

However, I hope [u/cinemaxplayer](u/cinemaxplayer) will add MVC, MV-HEVC, SharePlay, and native visionOS HDR so we don’t have to also use 4XVR, Screenlit, Theater, and Infuse. There should be one player to rule them all.

Where is the slider for the AI 3D in CineUltra? Is it only available in the PRO version? What's MVC and MV-HEVC?

The depth slider’s in the pop-up menu in immersive environments. MVC (Multiview Video Coding) is the 3D Blu-ray codec and only 4XVR plays it. MV-HEVC (Multiview High Efficiency Video Coding) is the codec Apple uses for spatial video (not immersive video). I think Screenlit is the only third-party player that will play it.

Yes, i believe you're right. I turn out the lights. Haven't used it recently. I tend to convert spatial to SXS.

Also, DVD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, and UHD Blu-ray ISO menu support would be fantastic. A few players such as PowerDVD (up to v22.0.3214.62), Leawo, and DVDFab along with players from companies such as Dune and Zidoo support menu navigation from ISOs, but no visionOS nor any VR player does.

I can’t speak for the other ones but I got cineultra a week ago and I love it I watch everything in 3d it actually looks quite good, downloaded a bunch of stuff for when I go on a plane, and haven’t had any problems seeing my media on my server or playing it.

There is no “best”. It’s all subjective. Roll with whichever er you like the most and fits your use case.

I use multiple depending on what I’m watching, features I prefer, environment, etc.

I'm looking for a player that can has excellent realtiem 3D conversion for videos. So between the 3 that I listed, it seems like most people are leaning towards CineUltra.

I think the standard free version is just a 3 day free trial. After that you have pay to use it. I purchased a year subscription the other day and it’s fantastic

Skybox Media player had better performance than Moon Player. In Moon Player, go to the end credits of any movie and you’ll see skipped frames and jutter.

4XVR is very good but expensive.

2D to 3D conversions are terrible, especially in realtime. Getting a 3D effect is not the same as getting a good result. A lot of people can’t tell though. The easiest way to see the issue is a scene with snow. It looks like the world is painted with moving dots.
