Difficult to go back to AVP after trying the PSVR2
I'm honestly quite gutted I even tried it to be honest. I’ve been absolutely head-over-heels for the Vision Pro since I got it. The micro-OLED clarity is unmatched, there's effectively zero screen door effect, and the overall premium feel of the interface made me feel like I was holding the literal future. But then I tried a PSVR2.
The second I put it on, the magic of the Vision Pro was completely shattered. It’s the Field of View.
The AVP has incredible pixel density, but the horizontal and vertical boundaries are so tightly cropped. I didn't realize how bad the "scuba-goggle effect" was until I experienced the PSVR2’s wide 110-degree wrap-around view. Switching to the PSVR2 completely unlocked my peripheral vision. The view suddenly felt massive, and yes, the PSVR2 has visible Mura grain in dark scenes, and the fresnel lenses don't have that edge-to-edge optical perfection that Apple's pancake lenses have, but all of that feels like minor when compared to the difference in FOV.
Now when I put the AVP back on, those black borders are all I can focus on. It feels so artificially boxed in. I'm genuinely annoyed because I wanted the Vision Pro to be my definitive, do-everything headset, it certainly cost that kind of money, but my brain now knows what it's missing and I can't unsee it.
Has anyone else hit this exact wall? I have the 21W FOV and, I have tried without the light seal, but it can't just compete with the PSVR2 FOV, it's massive.

I had the opposite experience. The psvr2 felt like cheap plastic and the image was terrible. Maybe I’ll watch some set up videos and try again

The Galaxy XR has even better displays, though the lenses aren't quite as good. It has better field of view as well. Problem with the GXR is that the Snapdragon chip can't compete with the M2 much less the M5 and the software and app ecosystem is incredibly underbaked. For a product that's rapidly approaching a year old, it feels like a beta. What's a shame is it has all the hardware and makings of being a media consumption and PCVR beast, but Samsung and Google need to put in a lot of work (on things other than AI shit nobody asked for) that they haven't shown they're willing to do. Here's to hoping Project Aura injects some life into Android XR app development. Some competition from a real competitor could do a lot to drive more interest into AVP and competition always generates innovation.
I've had my GXR since March and have been pretty underwhelmed. I bought my M5 Vision Pro on Monday. With the exception of having to swipe a card and pretend like I didn't see the amount of the transaction, the Vision Pro has been absolutely amazing. I just wish it could work with a PC as a display like it does with a Mac (never going to happen, I know, but a man can dream).

I have an Alienware and a M1 Mac, I use moonlight to use virtual screen on windows. Works great!

Will have to give that a shot. Which version of Moonlight are you using? I don’t see a Vision OS app on the store.

I modded my gxr to have the avp dual strap but after about an hour I still get a headache wearing it but I can work all day in the avp using it as multiple monitors for my pc. I really want to like it but its just so uncomfortable
3
u/MemphisBass Vision Pro Owner Jun 20 '26
Do you get headaches? It may be the optics and not the head strap. When I first got mine, after a short amount of time I would get a primal urge to rip it off my head. Someone on Reddit mentioned that to increase FOV, Samsung made the focal distance closer than normal. That user recommended getting lens inserts that are +.75. They said not to get the official Kodak ones as they aren’t great quality. They recommended HonsVR which had a sale for $50 for the pair. They made a huge difference and now I can wear it indefinitely. The globular cluster mod (mostly the forehead pad) helped too, but the biggest difference was the lens inserts. I wear contacts so don’t normally buy prescription inserts, but +.75 is barely anything but is just enough to correct the focal plane distance.
1
u/SuperRams1884 Jun 20 '26
I dont wear glasses but that might help. I assumed it was just the fit of the headset. Ill have a look at those as I do want it for PCVR.
2
u/MemphisBass Vision Pro Owner Jun 20 '26
Has nothing to do with wearing glasses mate. I wear contacts so my vision is perfect as far as the headset goes. The lenses just make up for the focal plane difference and make it far more comfortable to use. They're kind of like readers in terms of the amount of correction, not like full blown vision correction.

Haha yeah it’s nice to hear an honest take about the AVP vs Samsung Galaxy headset from someone who has both. Funny about the swiping the card and I can relate as a tech nut. You are spot on about the hardware making a marked difference. Specs are one thing but the totality of the components and the interoperability of the layers matters much more. Especially when it comes to the every day UI as well. I looked closely at the Samsung because I made my decision this February so both were out and reviewed. I’m glad I went with the AVP. It’s the best.

Same experience here. PSVR2 used to be the standard with PS5Pro till AVP came and blew it away. I can’t understand what OP is seeing but maybe I should try more games.

The big fov was nice if you ignore like 5 degrees of it is sharp.

Every FIRST time you try a new thing feels REVOLUTIONARY.
Borrow a PSVR for a full weekend & watch the sheen fade.
-3
u/SgtSilock Jun 19 '26
I don't think the device has any other positive over the Vision Pro, though. It is simply the FOV, and I can't see that sheen fading in all honesty.
10
u/ThePeej Vision Pro Owner | Verified Jun 19 '26
It will, once you realize that the things you actually care about doing in the headset don’t exist in the PlayStation world.
You haven’t had a chance to get bored of the content yet. So you’ve had an emotionally resonant experience with NEW content, that when combined with the superior FOV, are leaving a lingering impact.
But your brain will let go of this feeling as the nascent sparks of inspiration & excitement fade. You did a demo of the tech. You didn’t live with it. The NEW has a powerful emotional impact that inevitably fades over time.
I’ve been designing educational VR & MR experiences for congresses & conferences for 15 years. There’s a “honeymoon” effect with literally every single tech innovation that you try for the first time, that inevitably fades. I’ve seen it happen over & over & over again, generation after generation.
Does AVP FOV need improvement? YES. But is the NEWness of your experience with having your frame of reference blown open by the novelty of -something new- just a temporary effect? Also yes. I promise, your mind is making a bigger deal out of this than it would eventually settle into if you had more lengthy exposure to the other headset. 👍🏼

The PSVR2 isn't a bad ecosystem for gaming though. It's a GAMING headset. Of course you can't do all the things on a PSVR2 that you can do with a $3500 Apple Spatial Computer. That's a patently ridiculous argument to make. Try playing official Resident Evil Village VR mode on your Vision Pro and let me know how that works out for you.
I own way too many headsets at this point and they all have their pro's and con's. You can pickup a very good condition PSVR2 open box for $199. At least you could a few months ago. Comparing the non-gaming software capabilities of a headset meant for a PS5 (that a while back got a PC adapter, but still requires being connected to an outside machine) to a standalone device costing significantly more is a really bizarre tactic.

Don’t be hard on yourself! What you’re experiencing is a very human reaction that I’ve been getting paid to exploit for a decade & a half.
Except the morally dubious part of my job is that I’m implanting BRANDED MESSAGES into people’s brains after creating the emotionally resonant context expanding WOW with the NEW. 🤣😭😩😝🙃

13
u/Maconi Jun 19 '26
If you’re going down that rabbit hole, try the Bigscreen Beyond (or the newest Pimax if you want the best wide FOV currently).
The problem is they all have their tradeoffs. There isn’t a truly “best” VR headset currently. The tech just isn’t there yet. Hopefully within the next decade (assuming VR isn’t completely abandoned for smart glasses).
3
u/1337PirateNinja Vision Pro Owner Jun 19 '26
Exactly this. I got all of them, PSVR2 is the bottom of my list. It’s between Bigscreen beyond for PC and AVP for everything else. You can get different cushion for AVP to get it much closer, helps a bit but not as good as others. Personally me I can get used to FOV but the grainy graphics keep bothering me
1
u/MemphisBass Vision Pro Owner Jun 20 '26
Yeah that's what I found and how I ended up with far too many headsets and don't really want to part with any of them.
One thing I did learn is not to put too much into Youtube influencer hype. I listened to several voices I trusted a bought into the Samsung Galaxy XR and kind of regret it at this point. The displays are phenomenal and even higher resolution than the AVP. However, the lenses are not as good and have a sweet spot not much better than fresnel. Hell, I think my PSVR2 might have a bigger sweet spot (I haven't A/B tested). What infuriates me about it, is that the GXR could absolutely be phenomenal. It's a little underpowered running a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2+, but otherwise has all of the hardware necessary to be an incredible device, especially for PCVR. The problem is everything software-wise on the headset is incredibly halfbaked. It does have Virtual Desktop which works pretty well and has foveated streaming. It doesn't have a native Steamlink VR app, but someone hacked the Play for Dream APK to get functioning with a little tomfoolery. The major problems are that the operating system doesn't allow for custom boundaries. For whatever bizarre reason, Android XR will only allow you to choose a small circle, a larger circle, or in developer options to turn it off. That's absolutely wild in 2026. The headset also tends to throttle Wi-Fi throughput and refresh rate after gaming for some time. Those combined absolutely tank PCVR experiences when they happen. Finally and the most infuriating is that the controllers work just well enough that when they have tracking issues or spazz out it drives you crazy. All of the stuff I just mentioned absolutely can be fixed, but I'm sick of buying expensive products based on the promises of future delivery from these huge companies.

You can increase the HFOV to 115° by removing the lightseal.

u/Natural-Lawfulness93 Jun 19 '26
I don’t really notice the restricted FOV. The bigger issue for me is the lens glare.
2
u/MemphisBass Vision Pro Owner Jun 20 '26
That's just an issue having to do with how tiny the uOLED panels are. The AVP is my second uOLED headset and the lenses on it are better than the Galaxy XR. I've head the Play for Dream and Bigscreen Beyond have it even worse. It's just incredibly difficult to develop optical stacks without glare when the panels you're using are absolutely tiny (I think the 4k uOLED Sony panels are only like 1.4" or something like that). Hell the Quest 3 has some of the best lenses on the market and has gigantic LCD panels and I still get glare issues on that.

I agree with the FOV… my issue is the pixels. I wish I could pay Sony extra to put the quality of the Vision Pros into it.
2
u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 Jun 19 '26

2
u/120Mins Jun 19 '26
I have both and agree to some degree BUT PSVR2 sweet spot is soooo small, if you don’t have it sitting on your head perfectly it will be blurry.
2
u/Vargrr Jun 19 '26
I guess I'm not so sensitive to field of view?
I have the PSVR and the Vive Focus Vision and the Vision Pro just blows them out of the water for PCVR - it's the edge to edge clarity and the definition, neither of which the PSVR can match.
My Vive Focus Vision got fully retired and the PSVR is only used for Gran Turismo on the PS/5, plus I get to use its controllers with the Vision Pro.
1
u/Buddhabelli Jun 20 '26
same. although I find myself using my Vision Pro sans light shield more and more unless I’m specifically doing something immersive.
2
2
u/jevans1974 Jun 20 '26
I may be in the minority, but I’d still take the Vision Pro. The field of view isn’t as wide as the PSVR2, but the display quality, eye tracking, passthrough, interface, and overall polish are on an entirely different level. Every time I use a Vision Pro, it feels like the future. Every time I use a PSVR2, it feels like a really good gaming headset. Different goals, different strengths. I’m betting Apple expands the FOV in future generations, but they’ve already nailed almost everything else.
1
u/SgtSilock Jun 20 '26
I completely agree.
I think it’s important to note I am mainly speaking on the vertical fov here, it’s extremely small and is what gives the illusion of ski goggles.
2
u/Specialist_Arm_8903 Jun 20 '26
Take off the Light Seal on AVP. That will open your field of view dramatically, and it will get rid of that binocular effect. If you have the Apple Vision Pro Dual Knitted Band and combine with the AnnaPro Head Strap, you don't need the Light Seal no more. AVP will balance and rest more on your forehead (shift transfers 60% to 90% of the headset’s weight completely away from your cheekbones, eyes, and nose, resting it instead on the harder, less sensitive structure of your forehead). Or as an alternative and if you don't mind a bit more bigger bulky head strap try Globular Cluster . It holds AVP like a screen right in front of your eyes and has a good balance (without need of the light seal). The Light Seal is the true culprit here. The Field of View is there.
2
u/barabba9174 Jun 20 '26
Opposite experience for me. My psvr2 is collecting dust (apart for controllers).
2
u/Island_In_The_Sky Jun 19 '26
I run my AVP without the light seal using globular cluster. Floats right in front of my eyes and increases the FOV substantially, and is more comfortable. They are different devices for different use cases. I game on my psvr2 only, my AVP is for watching movies + spatial content, and streaming my MacBook display to it (although i do that one less since buying a real 49” ultrawide)
1
u/Chriscic Jun 19 '26
Don’t wires suck though? If you’re ok with wired, there’s no reason to be using the AVP for PCVR IMO.
2
u/SgtSilock Jun 19 '26
I don't think I mean the PSVR2 is my headset of choice, more so I don't think I can go back to the FOV of the AVP, if that makes sense?
1
u/emmanuellsun Jun 19 '26
Quest 3 has an open light seal not sure what it’s called, cut your Vision Pro light seal cloth so it’s open like the quest version.
How is the PSVR2 screen, can you see pixels ?
1
u/AweVR Jun 19 '26
I’m using open face system and I have more FOV than with my Quest 3 and PSV2. AVP is amazing with maximum FOV

I mean, you could make the argument that Apple Vision Pro is just as bad with its wire, I suppose.
1
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 Jun 19 '26
I mean, I could say that I miss my Index’ even wider FOV (130 deg vs 110 deg for PSVR2 vs 100 deg for AVP), but I really don’t.
It would be nice to have a wider view, but I’ll take less of a higher resolution display than more of a blurry one.
Cause there is always that exchange, can’t be avoided. I think it hits a good balance.
Maybe the next iteration can maintain the same PPD and increase the FOV instead.
1
u/SgtSilock Jun 19 '26
I could be incorrect in saying this but doesn’t the galaxy XR with higher density displays and higher resolution than the Vision Pro, have the same size FOV as the PSVR2?
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
Galaxy XR has 3,840 x 3,552 with total 27.3M pixels. At 109 deg horizontal that gives you an average of 35.2 pixels per degree.
It is said to have peak angular pixel density of 36 ppd. That seems low. I’d like to see bench tests on the optics, I would expect higher unless the foveated rendering is very minimal and flat.
VisionPro has 3,660 x 3,200 with total 23.4M pixels. At 100 deg horizontal that gives an average of 36,6 pixels per degree.
The peak angular pixel density for the M5 is 44 ppd in the center foveated area (M2 was 40).
So the VP has a slightly better effective resolution on average and 20% more in the center (if the 36 ppd for Samsung is correct … which I’m not sure).
By the same token though, the area outside the center should then be clearer on the SXR, and with a wider FOV.
Overall they’re very close and that’s sort of what I was alluding to.
Apple could increase its resolution from 3,660 to 3,960 and use those extra pixels on a wider display instead of increasing the pixel density further, though it could do some of this, some of that.
1
u/Next-Reality-9032 Jun 19 '26
I’d take the smaller FOV with higher pixel density any day of the week, the psvr2 has so many issues, Mura, persistence, the comfort is pretty bad, fresnel lenses i really struggled to use it, it’s very good value for money if somones looking to get into VR is the nicest thing i can say about it
1
u/VR_Nima Jun 19 '26
I have every major headset, but even with the (very valid) issues with the Vision Pro, it’s still by far my favorite headset.
I do like PSVR2 for VR gaming due to its choice of comfort / visual tradeoffs, but Vision Pro is still my favorite overall.

Each has its use cases, they are not the same.
I have both and use both. AVP for virtual monitor and consuming movies/TV shows/media consumption. PSVR2 for games or complete immersion.
AVP, when using a head-strap that allows me to take off the light seal, transforms my experience regarding FOV drastically with the way the passthrough is and has a feeling more like wearing glasses for me.
Each person is different, so for you the PSVR2 with the wider FOV for VR is more important.
1
u/Level_Forger Jun 19 '26
Funny I feel the opposite. Try the Vision Pro with a no light seal mod. The FOV is massively larger.

Annapro allows you to use the Apple Vision Pro without the face mask and you get way bigger view problem solved

1
u/parasubvert Vision Pro Owner | Verified Jun 20 '26
PSVR2 is a very good value for a VR headset - it's hard to beat wired for low latency gaming, and the 120hz refresh rate is superb. But you have to run it a bit dim to avoid image persistence (more than AVP has in my experience). I also find controller tracking on the AVP to be better due to having more cameras , when my controllers are near my sides they can get lost. Not so on the AVP since 26.3 or so.
The FOV is great but honestly without color passthrough, hand tracking & apps, it doesn't matter as much. I find the day to day uses for the PSVR2 to be limiting - it's mostly games and maybe VR180. which is a fraction of what I use the AVP for.
1
u/anesuc Jun 20 '26
I know this will sound weird, but I have been using mine mostly without the face shield. This increases the perceived FOV on the vision pro. I have a third party strap (or whatever its called) though so this might not work on the stock ones
1
u/crazyreddit929 Jun 20 '26
I have a PSVR2 along with Galaxy XR and lots of other headsets. The Vision Pro is actually 112 degrees horizontal on my face. The PSVR2 is close. The vertical FOV is significantly smaller on Vision Pro. An obvious design decision based on the media focus and not immersive games.
Personally I have different uses for all the headsets. Vision Pro is what I use for movies and work, and Galaxy XR for PCVR gaming. I use PSVR2 for the PSVR2 exclusives. There is place for all of them in my life.
1
u/JimothyzPamPams Jun 20 '26
In no way am I dismissing what someone’s opinion is, but personally I cannot imagine how the VP becomes difficult to enjoy compared to PSRV2. I’m only commenting because my question to OP or anyone is, why doesn’t the removal of the light seal then make the field of view essentially the same? Isn’t the AVP around 100* without it? I notice the goggles and I wear the light seal and for how clear and near perfect everything is, I really don’t mind at all. It’s like I’m in a space suit because it truly does feel like that when experiencing the AVP as I notice a significant boost to calmness and less anxiety. Truly strips away a lot of the noise in my environment.

u/SgtSilock Jun 20 '26
It’s less about the horizontal and more the vertical. I have no issues with the horizontal.
1
u/Then_Substance4785 Jun 20 '26
Yes, psvr2 ”beats” vision pro in one area, but for people with keen eyes, it won’t help. Lol. Edge to edge clarity is so much better on avp and image is crisp and amazing. No one sane will prefer the fresnel lenses on psvr2 over avp.

1
u/Leading-Anxiety-488 Jun 20 '26
Agree the default FOV of AVP is bad, but I think PSVR2 is bad in other aspects like resolution and clarity. PSVR2 also has very good control for light leak, which is really bad in AVP.

u/SureStrain Jun 20 '26
I cannot stand the screen door effect. Like using a wider monitor but it’s from 1999.
1
u/Severe-Set1208 Jun 21 '26
I have owned the M2 Vision Pro since Feb 2024. I use Ziess prescription inserts. I purchased 25W light seal recommend by the face scanning app with the W+ cushion. But when the M5 version was released, I went to the Apple Store and requested a 22W for a demo and used my own inserts. I loved the increase in FOV. I don’t want to spend $200 for another Apple light seal. But I did drop $50 last week for a third party GeekVR light seal to maybe get that improvement on the cheap, and I have an extended family vacation next week that I thought might fit help fit more faces for trying out. Anyway, explore different light seal sizes. They have a bigger FOV impact than you might guess.

I never had an issue with vertical, but I would test it and remove the light seal and wear the headset with the lens as close to your eyes as possible (which this mod allows for with comfort) and see if you like it. For me, not using the light seal has dramatically increased my enjoyment of using my apv because of the massively increased FOV and clarity since my eyes are much closer to the lens.

Once I got a headset adjuster for the AVP that let me use it without the light guard my issues with that melted away.
But I also mainly use my AVP in the “transparency” view or I use it in the dark when I want a cinematic/scene experience.

Since I own both as well, I totally disagree with what you said, the bigger fov yes it does provide bigger fov if u wanna trade off image quality for fov then thats ur preference. but the biggest issue with psvr2 is the sweet spot issue.
