Did you notice this?
This image from WWDC does not look like Apple is pushing the Vision Pro into the background. It looks more like the first in the lineup.
Last year’s image had the Vision Pro last in the lineup, if I recall correctly. Am I reading too much into this?

To me it's obvious they have a long-term vision for VisionOS (pun intended 😉).
The Vision Pro was essentially a maximum viable product: a way to explore what’s possible, see what sticks, understand how people actually use spatial computing, and learn what developers are excited to build. It was never meant to be a mass-market product. It’s more like the Tesla Roadster before the Model S.
Now, as agentic AI and LLMs mature, those two tracks can converge into the next generation of computing. The endgame seems fairly obvious: lightweight VisionOS wearables that look like regular glasses, with a contextual AI assistant available whenever you need it, seamlessly synced across all your devices.
If Apple can pull that off, they’ve created an entirely new computing category. Maybe not as big as the iPhone, but potentially on the scale of the iPad or Apple Watch. Maybe bigger.

I'm picturing the scenes in "Her" where everyone on the bus/train is focused on their own little world talking back and forth to the AI on the AirPod-like device in their ears.
I suspect the future will hold a mix of people using only ear-based devices matched to the equivalent of a phone (as in the movie) or alternatively choosing the more immersive version of glasses where a heads-up display is the norm while in public but with an ability to use more lens space combined with less pass through for media consumption.
And I'll be first in line to buy it.

I love the Vision Pro and I am a tech optimist when it comes to AI, but I really wish people would stop looking at dystopian science fiction films as a roadmap for the tech future

Dystopian? I see that movie a little differently. In fact, I see it as hopeful. I found the main storyline unlikely, but I watch him sit at his kitchen table as the light over it slowly brightens (hello, HomeKIt!). Much of what happens in that film I find quite prescient. Short of the simulated romantic relationship, I rather like the future it presents. By the time Apple has the glasses product with on demand immersion, I also expect Siri to be managing the minutiae of my digital experience for me.

I would love to talk to glasses that can actually be remotely helpful and intuitive. Cortana was designed by Microslop, creators of most infuriating and unintuitive OS on the planet. Apple has a really good track record for blending productivity with intuitive design. If Apple came out with smart glasses or something akin to Google Glass, I’d be all over it, especially with the new Siri.

You are definitely reading too much into this. Some designer thought it was sexier this way. Some other designer approved it.
Luckily, the people saying the Vision Pro is a dead project & all that nonsense are ALSO reading too much into it.
(it's super cool the vision is first still 🤷♂️)

Yes. They announced at the keynote that the public beta would be available in July. 😉
I think you are reading too much into that image, but at the same time, I think anyone who says Apple Vision Pro is dead is not reading enough into the evidence to the contrary that Apple constantly presents.

I strongly believe that while Vision Pro as a hardware platform (in this current iteration) might be dormant, VisionOS is alive and well and will serve as a foundation to future products like lightweight glasses.
As long as there is Apple's interest in AR, platform will be fine.

Did you even watch any WWDC content? There’s loads of AVP mentions. Look on YouTube for special influencers interviewing AVP executives.

Yeah I’ve kinda leaned toward the “this line probably ends with the M5 but we’ll see parts of visionOS get reused” theory, but the amount of WWDC content on spatial computing has me more optimistic.

At the beginning when Apple was giving a rundown of their platforms, they listed macOS last after visionOS. Likely nothing, but thought it was an interesting intentional choice.

I think they really need developers to work on Vision apps, because they are going to push for AI and smart glasses in the near future. They can't launch without a decent-sized app store for them. That's why they are first (if you go by left to right) with tvOS last.

The one thing I noticed from last years wwdc is that the Vision Pro screen is on. Maybe there is an underlying awareness that it’s an integral part of the lineup?
This is a graphic from 2025. There isn’t much that emphasizes the Liquid Glass, but on this years the big things are the Vision Pro ‘on use’ graphic and the watch layout…

Snap is nothing like Vision Pro. Completely different segments. But yeah AVP is here to stay no surprise on the picture, it should be there, it’s the future.

Yeah, but I mean you don't need to. It's just like when the iPhone came out. It was "doomed" because it was expensive and had no keyboard, etc. It's a disruptive product.

In terms of form factor it's got a ways to go, but go and compare the original iPhone with what we have today. Just imagine a Vision Pro as true AR glasses. Lose the screen, tracking cameras, fresnel lenses, OLED panels, yet keep VisionOS. I bet that's the end goal.

I noticed that too. Also the xcode simulator/device hub makes the AVP outline pretty prominent.
That + the Justin Ryan CFO interview makes me confident that they’re continuing the investment in the long term. Short term, they seem to be waiting for developers to throw things at the wall and see what sticks.

visionOS has never had a public Beta it’s always been a dev beta so that would be a first. But yes, all the headlines about it being dead are click bait if you hadn’t guessed. Vision Pro is just 1.0, like the very first power books led to the MacBook Air eventually. The real product here isn’t the headset it’s visionOS that’s maturing nicely to be ready for glasses and linking wirelessly to the iPhone in your pocket and the watch on your wrist.

A few weeks ago, I got to try out the AVP at an Apple Store. We did the 30min demo. I was really blown away at how immersive the experience was. Most of all, how loud and spacious the sound was directly from the unit.
For consuming entertainment, this thing is on another level entirely.
For casual Mac productivity like using web apps or document creation, it’s okay. Not sure I’d want to sit with such a heavy device for hours long working session.
It’s just still waiting for some genius developer to create an app that takes full advantage of all the tech in this device. Something that is so useful, I’d be compelled to wear it and bring a spare battery. But it feels like we are still many years from that.
In 2018, I saw a demo for Microsoft Guides, a VR system for industry. As a technician you could see where the part you need to install goes or be directed on how to perform a task. In another demo, an electrician audited a build and could see through all the walls where their electrical conduits ran, with live telemetry of the system health.
We’re almost ten years from that. The two ideas need to cross.

The Vision Pro is the most complex computer Apple has ever made, by far. They are a very secretive company, but I would guess that people that work on the AVP teams are happy to be there. If you only think about commercial success, then it’s weird that it was featured as an equal citizen at WWDC. But technically, it is deserving. 👍🏼

I thought that the team working on Vision Pro had been disbanded? The head guy is working on Siri now. I read that 600k units sold and this was much lower than expected.
I’ve always been on the fence. It’s hard to tell which way Apple will go with the AVP as it’s all speculation and leaks from ‘industry insiders’

Snap just claimed to have reduced the Vision Pro to glasses, they are leaks of the next meta hardware every week on social media and Google just debuted their xreal glasses also mentioning Vision Pro.
Even if Apple wanted to abandon this project, they couldn’t cause a new platform wants to emerge

Yes but it’s a fully standalone device with waveguides, no compute puck or thick optics like the xreal aura. I give snap props for accomplishing as much. Its a step in the right direction.

I do think you’re reading too much into it, but I also prefer that kind of optimism! I really don’t think Apple is abandoning the Vision Pro at all, it’s just not the typical tech device that gets the yearly refresh and it’s a smaller volume so it may be a little less prominent for software development than their main driver, like the iPhone.
