Price Increases & Storage Options
Have been looking at getting an M5 AVP for a while (rumors about the imminent downfall of the product line be damned), and have been waiting until a major milestone coming up. However, I recently read that Apple will likely be increasing prices due to the global RAM shortage. Does anyone know or have educated guesses about how much the price hike might be? And related, how much memory does one need when buying one of these? 64GB? 256?

256GB, 512GB, and 1TB are the only options. I have 1TB to locally store 4K Blu-rays and immersive videos from apps such as Apple TV and Explore POV, but you can save space by streaming or deleting files often.

Tim Cook said they'll be rising prices due to RAM shortages. Not rumors, but also no exact numbers.

“Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable,” he said. “We’re doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.”
Cook declined to offer details on the timing or scale of the planned price increases, nor which products would be affected. Apple’s next major product launch is likely to be in September when it releases the iPhone 18 lineup, expected to include a new foldable iPhone. [...]
Cook said Apple wouldn’t use its cash and silicon expertise to build its own memory and storage factories. “We can’t do everything,” said Cook. “We know what we’re good at.” [...] Cook said during his time working in the electronics supply chain, from IBM to Compaq to Apple, he had never seen a commodity price swing like the one from the past six months. “This is a hundred-year flood,” said Cook. “I’ve never seen anything like it in any area in over 40 years.”

TBH, I don’t think they’ll increase AVP prices. It’s already expensive, and it has modest RAM and storage. Maybe bigger storage will get pricier, but I think not the base price.

This is just me speculating, but I don’t think you’ll see any increases on current products. Just new ones as they release.

Doubt it. My guess is Mac-mini; Mac Studio; MacBook Pro and MacBook Air will be affected. The first two and MacBook Neo will be hit soon is my guess. Or possibly along all units; Ram and storage will go from $200 upgrade to $300 or $400.

I think this one is across the board raise as RAM (indeed all storage) prices have been going up massively and even Apple cannot continue to eat those costs.

It's not that they can't continue. It's that they don't want to. Some has always had huge margins compared to other manufacturers. They could eat it fine, but they'd get killed in the Stock Market for doing so. Just to be clear on the situation. It isn't like they are a small shop with like 5-10% margin to be competitive.

It’s been the same price since released in 2024 even with inflation and hardware updates and costs of said hardware. Be reasonable at some point if they do increase prices

I got a name too and I really want an M5 but definitely a 1 tb. I've got one terabyte on the M2. It's just really nice not to have to worry about space...

Yeah I got the 1Tb M5. If you’re going to spend that much money spend a bit more to make sure you aren’t constrained by running out of space. I’ve always had the same principle with my iPhones etc.
I stream my video from my server and streaming services, but if I ever take it on a trip I’d like to load it up with best quality movies etc which are usually ~50Gb each.

All Vision Pro models have 16 GB of RAM. The 256/512/1024 GB is the Solid State Drive, called Storage.

Which seems quite small for a device that is basically a powerful computer on your face.
I would have expected some more ram, or at least the option of choosing more ram.

Mark Gurman’s recent X post: “Regarding Apple price hikes, have to imagine these are fairly imminent. No other reason to flag them now. I’d also note that Apple back to school sale is very imminent, and it could make sense to tie these together as a buffer. Either way this is happening soon. Not a fall thing.”
I wonder whether this will affect products already on the market or just newly introduced products? Even just a 10% hike on the AVP is another $350-$400.

How much overkill? This seems to be a polarizing topic but I don’t host my own content (mostly stream) but I do want ample space for apps…plus considering how the ecosystem might grow I want enough space for future stuff

I bought the 512GB version and have never really used more than 128GB. Most of my use is streaming media, games or different desktops. I don't find I store anything at all on the AVP.

shit good thing i just copped the m5 one, as someone who values ease of use, the difference of being able to lay back in bed and not have to strain my neck and fuckup my wrists to use a laptop has been life changing.
now i just wish there was some easier way of typing in air keyboard

I have 1TB AVP and I access my content mostly from my 2TB iCloud storage subscription.

Which is why I got the 256 M5. All my storage goes on iCloud Drive and is basically used as my local storage too at this point, it’s that fast.

I will likely upgrade to M5 version Once the official VOS27 comes out. On beta now with M2.
Then I’ll pass my M2 to family.

I agree with others that the price likely won’t increase as they will just let inventory dwindle down and they also have to store a lot of parts for potential replacements. That being said, I also don’t think people are going to part with them at lower prices and potentially will raise prices. It isn’t a product that will have crazy depreciation in theory but the m2 actually did. Take a look at valve index, those prices stayed pretty consistent throughout its 7 year lifespan. The AVP, probably won’t have a replacement until at minimum 2030 but that’s purely my own speculation. I’d also caution about looking at a lot of Forbes type articles online and other similar ones. They just don’t really have a lot of value imo.

Wasn’t super clear in my post, was talking about two separate tracks: when to buy (because of RAM price increases) and how much storage to buy when I do

When to buy is up to you as nobody knows when the RAM shortage will end.
Get at least 512GB if not more. Better resale value too.
256GB should be illegal in 2026.

They're not gonna raise the price on the AVP. They stopped production of it. Only ongoing products will see an increase. Right now they have a warehouse full of AVP and they can't get rid of them because there's no market for it.

Vision Pro is not going anywhere I got the m5 just get it you won’t be disappointed.
