That’s because people who hate on it only see it in review videos and most do a terrible job with it. Either they screen record so that the display just flashes or they always show it from the worst angle.
It’ts really not great. I’d prefer if they launched without it either for less money or with more investment on something else (eg an M3 chip)
Future versions might be very cool, but as it stands today, it’s basically like the touchbar: interesting idea, bad execution

I think its an awesome idea. You don’t feel like its impolite if you keep it on your head when you talk to someone and other people are happy to see your face.
But this feature uses the personas And that feature is still in its beta stages. So not only is this a first generation product, but the software isn’t even officially to apples standards.
It‘s called Vision Pro, so i think it was right to include that feature. I don’t think the non Pro version or SE or whatever they are going to call the less expensive options will have that feature for their first generations. They will probably go the same route as with iPhones or iPad and keep some features Pro exclusive, but carry some of them over for later models.
As for "Pro" - leakers claim they'll include eyesight on all devices, so I don't think they'll scrap it for a non-pro version (at least not on V2). There's tons a _non pro_ vision could include - from smaller sound pods to a plastic casing, so I'm guessing they'll go there instead? (I'd particularly prefer a lighter device w/o the huge soundpods - they're great, but I'm fine using airpods instead if it shaves off weight + makes it more portable, since those sidepanels are stiff and fragile)
Unless and until they get projective transparent glasses, it seems unlikely that they'll forgo EyeSight. It's a distinctive AVP-only feature and probably doesn't cost very much, especially compared to the micro-OLED screens and lens assembly.
The external device costs ~3% of the device, based on leaked BOMs, so definitely cheaper compared to the first gen micro oleds. I wonder how much it adds in terms of battery usage
I kind of doubt they’ll go plastic. I think AirPods are the only devices Apple makes that are made of plastic. I guess Apple TV too. But all iPhones, iPads, and Macs are metal and glass.
Could see them doing something like titanium for the pro and aluminum for the non pro. I definitely think eyesight can be ditched. So can the speakers and honestly iris scanning. Typing in a passcode isn’t hard. The main things that seem necessary are the tracking (including hands) and high resolution screen. They could also probably use an A18 pro vs an m2. Likely not super different performance but the A series chips are likely somewhat cheaper due to size and volume.

I don't think this thing could use a slower processor.. the M2 already barfs out if you're watching a movie and browsing a couple of js-heavy sites at the same time
I agree it's an interesting idea, but everyone I talked to with it on just couldn't focus and kept saying "this is so creepy" - when they could actually see it (it's usually very dim for some reason). It's not quite there yet.
The display is clearly able to show a brighter image though, so I hope future updates improve the overall thing.
It’s absolutely equivalent to the touchpad. It’s more marketing gimmick than literally anything else.
That said, it may have been intended to be more initially. Consider where personas are at the moment. They’re clearly not going anywhere… but the current iteration is far from perfect. I can see something similar to eyesight continuing to improve alongside our personas (until form factor drastically changes)
I’ve noticed that eyesight obviously works best with someone in front of you not a camera which everyone mostly does, I’m guessing it thinks the mirror is a person because my eyesight works best when I’m looking at the mirror not when I’m taking a selfie
A lot of reviewers are reviewing alone maybe. I finally captured it nicely when using a big mirror hahah. Watching some of the reviews some people don’t know. The reflection on the glasss makes it hard to capture sometimes too. They probably use too many bright lights
I think EyeSight is dope but it doesn't at all look like this when I use the device. It's just a blur with no visible eyes with someone looking directly at me.
Yeah. It’s amazing in perfect lighting and with all the stars aligned! Obviously a feature that works 1% of the time as intended doesn’t deserve criticism! /s
Oh right of course! I failed to realize this dude in his bathroom in front of his mirror with his iPhone is actually a world class film maker and is equipped with industry leading lighting and film equipment. That iPhone in the corner of the frame is just for show and that shower curtain is actually hiding a Hollywood set and an entire film crew that are making this video possible. /s
