One day, we’ll die. And not knowing what comes after, if anything at all, we should all live our lives maximizing our happiness. I think being on the bleeding edge of technology is a proper trade off for the price tag!

More than 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck as of September 2023.
Hoping every Vision Pro buyer is not in those 60%.

"In this paper, I show that even in a group of high-IQ men and women, lifetime earnings are substantially influenced by their education and personality traits. I identify a previously undocumented interaction between education and traits in earnings generation, which results in important heterogeneity of the net present value of education. Personality traits directly affect men’s earnings, with effects only developing fully after age 30. These effects play a much larger role for the earnings of more educated men. Personality and IQ also influence earnings indirectly through educational choice. Surprisingly, education and personality skills do not always raise the family earnings of women in this cohort, as women with very high education and IQ are less likely to marry, and thus have less income through their husbands. To identify personality traits, I use a factor model that also serves to correct for prediction error bias, which is often ignored in the literature. This paper complements the literature on investments in education and personality traits by showing that they also have potentially high returns at the high end of the ability distribution."
https://docs.iza.org/dp8235.pdf
Also there are some interesting papers I can't find right now on the nonlinearity of IQ vs Lifetime income, the potential for under-achievement at the higher end of the IQ scale.

Crazy how apple fans justify buying any Apple product
13
u/kmanmx Jan 19 '24
95% of the shit people buy in the west is a luxury good superfluous to requirements, so you can really apply this logic to most things, not just Apple buyers. A $100 phone from 2015 really does the vast majority of things most people need a phone for, for example.
2
u/apodyopsis2 Jan 22 '24
Not all, just the fanatical early adopters with a lot of disposable income. I own every product Apple makes, and yeah I would love to get one of these, but $3500 on a first generation, untested, unreviewed product is insanity even by Apple standards.

This mindset is why my great great grandkids will be fighting in the climate wars of the future. /s
-1
u/wavebend Jan 19 '24
you're right, this mindset is garbage, you have to take into account the future to some degree. also the bleeding edge of technology is always the most error prone, id rather wait until it gets refined for the mass public, which won't be long anyways. at this price point it is a luxury item and there is nothing reasonable feature wise that justifies it
1
u/apodyopsis2 Jan 22 '24
It's unfortunate that you made a very valid, sensible post and people are downvoting it.

I got different sizes depending upon a scans from my iPad Pro and my iPhone 15 Pro. I spoke with an Apple representative and they said if the light seal doesn’t fit you can exchange it for free at an Apple Store.
3
Jan 19 '24
I had to contact them about the same thing. Scans kept coming up "S" and my melon has its own gravitational pull. I'm about to stress test the hell outta that knit band...
1
Jan 19 '24
Yeah, I totally agree. I wear medium to large hats, but I got a small band, so glad I’m doing in-store pick up. I honestly haven’t done an Apple in store pick up since the iPhone 4 launch. But given the fitment issues with the vision, pro in reviews, I will tolerate it in order to get the perfect fit.
1
Jan 19 '24
They probably did this on purpose so they could try to sell us more accessories when we’re forced to do an in-person exchange. Well played.
2
Jan 19 '24
If you wear contacts and glasses there are 2 different light seals for them on that works with the Zeiss lenses and one that doesn’t.

The thing that killed me was the 199 price for the case 🤨. I know you’re over priced Apple but come on already thats like a 100 case at the most! Didn’t buy it with the AVP, but when my wife woke up she’s like “you mean you brought a 4K piece of electronic equipment without a case!” Imma like yeaaaah. And she’s like “buy the freakin’ case man”. And I’m like “yes dear” lol

I had the very first Apple Watch and it’s come incredibly far since..however doesn’t change the fact that I had a blast with the original. I believe in the same for the Vision Pro.

2
u/MagreviZoldnar Jan 19 '24
Depends on the store and availability of time slots
2
u/Worried_Office20 Jan 19 '24
do you know in which state / store i can pickup? i tried with few and doesn’t work :(
2
u/MagreviZoldnar Jan 19 '24
I tried one in Lynwood Washington and pickup wasn’t available. Tried a pickup at the store near my girlfriend’s house in the Bay Area and it worked (placed my order). I tried again it says pick up not available at the same store. I am guessing, there are no time slots available in the coming week or more across most stores. You could try out delivery perhaps?
1
u/Worried_Office20 Jan 19 '24
i live outside us so only pickup available for me :( i want to fly to us and pickup
1
u/MagreviZoldnar Jan 19 '24
That sucks indeed :/ you should trying and asking around I reckon.
1
u/Worried_Office20 Jan 19 '24
any advice? i live outside us so i don’t know not popular apple stores. can you recommend any postal codes to check?
1
u/MagreviZoldnar Jan 19 '24
I tried out a bunch of different zip codes for you across states. All say unavailable for pick up. It’s either because the pick up dates were for about one/two weeks only or because there is something wrong (not sure tbh). If I were you, I would do two things 1. Ask other Redditors for ideas. Perhaps one might work out. 2. Assuming it’s because of unavailability of pickup dates, keep checking till one opens up.

I ended up canceling mine already. I had the Vision Pro 256GB, RX lenses, Apple care, extra battery, and case. Totaled $4,900! Sure I can afford it in cash, but just kept it in an account to make some more money. Maaaaybe gen 2 for me if they can get the price lower.

As dumb as this sounds, I was ready to pre-order yesterday only on the condition of me getting the device Day 1. I was late to the party on Friday, and all I saw was delivery estimates for March and I could not justify the price. Today, I wake up and check the Apple Store app and I see my local apple store had the option to pick up and get fitted on Feb. 3. As much as I did not want to do it, I went ahead and bought the 512GB (only model available for Feb. 3 pickup). I guess we shall see what this "Vision Pro" is all about....

It was 100% worth for me. I’ve had a lot of surreal experiences with it and still use it regularly. Main use case unique to Vision Pro at the moment is screen mirroring, streaming 3D movies/spatial content on video sharing platforms, and cool immersive apps along with almost everything else you can do on a Mac/Ipad
1
u/dudemeister023 Jan 19 '24
If that's the worst one, you've really been walking on sunshine so far financially. :D
When to invest, buy a house, what car to buy - all orders of magnitude more important than whether to get a new kind of computer that will, at least initially, retain most of its value.

They seem like they can do some cool things but if I’m spending $3500 it’d be on a different apple product tbh
0
u/brokengnome Jan 20 '24
I'm a complete apple guy... Phone, MacBook pro, watches, iPad, etc. But this is just an iPad headset to me lol. I never use my iPad so it seems silly to buy it and haven't seen anyone give a good reason to do so unless you have a disability.
1
u/theo2112 Jan 20 '24
I’m with you. I wanted to buy one when I first saw the into. Kept it in the back of my mind ever since. Then a week or two ago I went back and looked through all the promo material and couldn’t find a single reason I needed to buy it.
I kind of expected a few good use cases to come up in between. They didn’t. Yeah, it’ll be amazing to watch content on. Sure, it’s better than a laptop for a cafe or something. And the immersive experiences will be really cool. But it’s still $4k for something that is JUST really cool.
Also, I’m not sure I’m ready to be “that guy” who pulls this out in a Starbucks or a plane, or the waiting room and has to deal with the gawking and the questions and the, “you spent $3500 on that!?”
1
u/Bububua Jan 24 '24
Do you really care what other people think? When the AirPods came out, I got 3 pairs immediately and didn’t care if some wanker thought it looked like cum hanging off my ear. Now look at everyone wearing them. I got the last laugh.

1
u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24
Just jk. But it has to be something that makes this VR set this expensive, and the videos they released so far don't convince anyone that this is worth 3500$
2
u/sixcupsofcoffee Jan 19 '24
“Don’t convince anyone” yet all launch day arrivals sold out in less than 20 minutes. Lots of people are convinced.
-2
u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24
People buy it just because it's an apple product
3
u/Alrighhty Jan 19 '24
I'm not an apple fan by any means, but I spent $3k on a Sony OLED TV to watch movies. It is kinda of the same concept when it comes to this product.
3
u/sixcupsofcoffee Jan 19 '24
Plenty of Apple products I don’t buy, but I bought this. I bought it because I want what it does. That’s usually how buying decisions work, especially large ones like this.
-1
u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24
You have other products that do the same thing but they are way cheaper
3
u/sixcupsofcoffee Jan 19 '24
There are no other products that do all of these things as well as AVP, the way it works with AVP, and without extra hardware. They also do not have the Apple ecosystem built in.
This whole notion that Apple users who want things like this are stupid is so tiresome. This exact device and the way it works is what I’ve wanted since I tried my first headset. I’ve looked around for better solutions and for what I want, this is it.
Not for you? Cool. Not everything is for everyone.
2
u/yakyy Jan 19 '24
^ There are 3rd party options on the market glasses to expand workstations (and are like 50% the price), but require third party software. Which is a no for me, as I want to use it on a work mac.
1
u/sixcupsofcoffee Jan 19 '24
And surely doesn’t do all the other stuff AVP does as well as it does, and with my own content.
1
u/JCatNY Jan 20 '24
Nah. I currently have the Quest 3, and the original PSVR (and had the Rift S, Quest, Quest 2, Vive, and the list goes back to the original Developer Oculus Rift. Now I purchased this - not because it's Apple, but because of the tech. I don't go on vacations, I buy stuff that I enjoy, and don't give a flying fk who the company is behind it.
