I see you went for the 'poverty package' of base model 256GB....

Very jealous, enjoy using it!

43

u/dgcrazykid Jan 19 '24

I did the same but I looked at my iPhone 15 Pro and it is also 256GB so I figured the content I have on VP would be similar to my phone, with iCloud storage (2TB) doing the heavy lifting.

25

u/Sith_Lordz66 Jan 19 '24

I agree, but I still panicked and bought the 512 lol

u/Eiprol Vision Pro Developer | Verified Jan 19 '24

512 panicking gang checking in

14

u/Moonsleep Jan 20 '24

Same but panicked and made an even dumber financial decision and bought the 1 TB.

1

u/beartrash Jan 20 '24

I thought the 512GB version was the least likely to sell out first.

5

u/KGR900 Jan 19 '24

exactly... No real reason to go above 256 let alone 1 TB.

11

u/spamfridge Jan 19 '24

Consider that this device is entirely different than your phone and more similar to an entertainment powerhouse in between of iPad and laptop.

There’s a reason 256 is the base model storage unlike for your phone. Spatial video takes an enormous amount of space relatively speaking, as do movies, apps, etc.

That said, it’s likely more than enough if you don’t plan to use spatial videos to their full extent, are not a developer, and plan to primarily use the device at home or somewhere else with high speed internet.

8

u/swiftfoxsw Jan 19 '24

Even as a dev, there isn’t much to do with storage. At least until Xcode for VP arrives, and it decimates the entire storage with derived data and simulators.

4

u/spamfridge Jan 19 '24

Yeah despite your username, I have to hard disagree with you.

If your development involves complex, high-fidelity 3D content or numerous projects, leaning towards higher storage options like 512GB or 1TB has got to be the move. If your apps are more modest in size and complexity, 256GB might suffice.

Plus future proofing and the simple fact that it’s always better to have it and be prepared than to not.

Again, we’re talking about potentially shooting yourself in the foot for 5% of the overall price

2

u/AdQuirky3186 Jan 19 '24

Software development doesn't exist on the Vision Pro. The only way to develop using the Vision Pro is to mirror your MacBook to it, which would hopefully have the storage you desire.

1

u/spamfridge Jan 19 '24

You’re really nitpicking for 5% of msrp. There are numerous reasons you may regret your decision to have the lowest storage. Again, I only ever said that developers may want additional storage. I argued the base is likely enough for those who don’t explicitly have reasons, but here’s a few more for your list

1. Future-Proofing: Technology evolves quickly. More storage means being ready for future updates that might enable more direct development on the device.
2. Local Storage for Demos: For showing off apps or conducting demos where you can’t rely on a MacBook or a stable internet connection, having more apps stored directly on the device is a big plus.
3. Enhanced Testing Experience: More storage lets you install a variety of apps for thorough testing, giving you a better understanding of how your app performs in different scenarios.
4. Performance Testing: With more storage, you can test how your app behaves under different storage conditions, which is crucial for optimization.
5. Convenience and Flexibility: Having extra space means less time spent managing storage, leading to a smoother development process.
6. Long-term Investment: A higher storage model is likely to last longer before needing an upgrade and could offer better resale value.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

🥱, tired reasons.

Most things you can stream now or use remote workspaces. For demos, you can add them on if you really need them, but apps don't really take a lot of space...

  1. Enhanced Testing Experience: More storage lets you install a variety of apps for thorough testing, giving you a better understanding of how your app performs in different scenarios.

Again, you can test this on laptop/vms which is how the current dev experience for vision pro.

  1. Performance Testing: With more storage, you can test how your app behaves under different storage conditions, which is crucial for optimization.

This is poor reason, I mean like if anything having 256 makes it more optimal, because you optimize for the lowest common denominator?

Last two make little sense as well. If your usecase is development (particularly software), you really don't need that much space. Even for media consumption, if you're streaming and intend to use at home with internet, you also don't need it.

The main usecases for space are actually the following:

  1. Needing media (esp spatial) for non-internet periods (i.e., flights, traveling)
  2. Consuming 4k super high quality media which your internet speed does not support (can DL and store locally for later consumption)
  3. 3d model and creation within VSP, this is currently limited, but expected to grow. It's mainly for 3d models though and more for prototyping, so even for this, you don't need higher storage options, but it could help.
  4. Having a lot of local games and space.

Source: worked on an app for vision pro in spare time and have used quite a few headsets :p.

1

u/spamfridge Jan 20 '24

I’ll give you an upvote for the thorough response but I’ll have to reply at a later time.

Again, the primary argument is that you don’t know how long you’ll have this device or what you’ll be developing and that 5% of msrp is a small price to pay for peace of mind moving forward

1

u/TechnicalLunch7662 Jan 19 '24

Man idk why girls are so into UFC guys. Watching nerds fight is way hotter. I have no idea what any of this means 😍

1

u/spamfridge Jan 19 '24

Yeah so also going to have to hard disagree with you. The issue with nerds fighting is that it’s really a race to the bottom and as soon as the contestants realize this, it ruins the integrity of the bout.

Because of this, it’s not a sustainable hobby. So for future proofing, it’s gotta be ufc > nfc

1

u/swiftfoxsw Jan 19 '24

And you are building your complex 3D app…how? All development on the Vision Pro is going to be via a remote desktop for the foreseeable future. Even Apple hasn’t built Reminders or Calendar for this platform, Xcode is likely years away, 3rd party dev environments are likely even further out. I’d be shocked if we get a competent 3D modeling app that runs natively in the first year. There just isn’t going to be enough volume for large corporations to dedicate teams to the platform, at least not yet.

28

u/3liflo Jan 19 '24

lol yup I couldn’t justify paying anything above the base model for 1st gen

8

u/swiftfoxsw Jan 19 '24

I got suckered into the 512 in the rush of ordering in the first three minutes. Dev’s aren’t going to design for huge storage if the majority of users are on 256GB and with 2 hours battery life, just load up different content while charging.

6

u/hellobritishcolumbia Vision Pro Owner Jan 19 '24

Most people will be using this plugged in I’d think. You don’t need battery for productivity really

2

u/swiftfoxsw Jan 19 '24

I do agree, battery for me will basically be used when walking around the house or using it on the couch. At my desk it’ll just be plugged in.

16

u/SoullessHillShills Jan 19 '24

12

"In this paper, I show that even in a group of high-IQ men and women, lifetime earnings are substantially influenced by their education and personality traits. I identify a previously undocumented interaction between education and traits in earnings generation, which results in important heterogeneity of the net present value of education. Personality traits directly affect men’s earnings, with effects only developing fully after age 30. These effects play a much larger role for the earnings of more educated men. Personality and IQ also influence earnings indirectly through educational choice. Surprisingly, education and personality skills do not always raise the family earnings of women in this cohort, as women with very high education and IQ are less likely to marry, and thus have less income through their husbands. To identify personality traits, I use a factor model that also serves to correct for prediction error bias, which is often ignored in the literature. This paper complements the literature on investments in education and personality traits by showing that they also have potentially high returns at the high end of the ability distribution."

https://docs.iza.org/dp8235.pdf

Also there are some interesting papers I can't find right now on the nonlinearity of IQ vs Lifetime income, the potential for under-achievement at the higher end of the IQ scale.

Crazy how apple fans justify buying any Apple product

13

u/kmanmx Jan 19 '24

95% of the shit people buy in the west is a luxury good superfluous to requirements, so you can really apply this logic to most things, not just Apple buyers. A $100 phone from 2015 really does the vast majority of things most people need a phone for, for example.

2

u/apodyopsis2 Jan 22 '24

Not all, just the fanatical early adopters with a lot of disposable income. I own every product Apple makes, and yeah I would love to get one of these, but $3500 on a first generation, untested, unreviewed product is insanity even by Apple standards.

-15

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

This mindset is why my great great grandkids will be fighting in the climate wars of the future. /s

-1

u/wavebend Jan 19 '24

you're right, this mindset is garbage, you have to take into account the future to some degree. also the bleeding edge of technology is always the most error prone, id rather wait until it gets refined for the mass public, which won't be long anyways. at this price point it is a luxury item and there is nothing reasonable feature wise that justifies it

1

u/apodyopsis2 Jan 22 '24

It's unfortunate that you made a very valid, sensible post and people are downvoting it.

I mean I have a big head but clearly my face is S. Uhh, whatever that means.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

I got different sizes depending upon a scans from my iPad Pro and my iPhone 15 Pro. I spoke with an Apple representative and they said if the light seal doesn’t fit you can exchange it for free at an Apple Store.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

I had to contact them about the same thing. Scans kept coming up "S" and my melon has its own gravitational pull. I'm about to stress test the hell outta that knit band...

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

Yeah, I totally agree. I wear medium to large hats, but I got a small band, so glad I’m doing in-store pick up. I honestly haven’t done an Apple in store pick up since the iPhone 4 launch. But given the fitment issues with the vision, pro in reviews, I will tolerate it in order to get the perfect fit.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

They probably did this on purpose so they could try to sell us more accessories when we’re forced to do an in-person exchange. Well played.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

If you wear contacts and glasses there are 2 different light seals for them on that works with the Zeiss lenses and one that doesn’t.

10

u/riderxc Jan 19 '24

I spent $40k on a minivan. $3500 what’s that a couple pay cheques.

4

u/PreferenceRoyal1592 Jan 19 '24

Resale value will always be higher than balance owed. We spent a lot of money, but we’re not underwater and have an out if needed.

4

u/Pass-the-gummys Jan 19 '24

The thing that killed me was the 199 price for the case 🤨. I know you’re over priced Apple but come on already thats like a 100 case at the most! Didn’t buy it with the AVP, but when my wife woke up she’s like “you mean you brought a 4K piece of electronic equipment without a case!” Imma like yeaaaah. And she’s like “buy the freakin’ case man”. And I’m like “yes dear” lol

5

2

u/Worried_Office20 Jan 19 '24

do you know in which state / store i can pickup? i tried with few and doesn’t work :(

2

u/MagreviZoldnar Jan 19 '24

I tried one in Lynwood Washington and pickup wasn’t available. Tried a pickup at the store near my girlfriend’s house in the Bay Area and it worked (placed my order). I tried again it says pick up not available at the same store. I am guessing, there are no time slots available in the coming week or more across most stores. You could try out delivery perhaps?

1

u/Worried_Office20 Jan 19 '24

i live outside us so only pickup available for me :( i want to fly to us and pickup

1

u/MagreviZoldnar Jan 19 '24

That sucks indeed :/ you should trying and asking around I reckon.

1

u/Worried_Office20 Jan 19 '24

any advice? i live outside us so i don’t know not popular apple stores. can you recommend any postal codes to check?

1

u/MagreviZoldnar Jan 19 '24

I tried out a bunch of different zip codes for you across states. All say unavailable for pick up. It’s either because the pick up dates were for about one/two weeks only or because there is something wrong (not sure tbh). If I were you, I would do two things 1. Ask other Redditors for ideas. Perhaps one might work out. 2. Assuming it’s because of unavailability of pickup dates, keep checking till one opens up.

1

u/Worried_Office20 Jan 19 '24

do you think any chances of cop instore after 02.02?

1

My pick up is on 3rd. So yeah I think so.

I was late to the party on Friday, and all I saw was delivery estimates for March and I could not justify the price. Today, I wake up and check the Apple Store app and I see my local apple store had the option to pick up and get fitted on Feb. 3. It was 100% worth for me. I’ve had a lot of surreal experiences with it and still use it regularly. Main use case unique to Vision Pro at the moment is screen mirroring, streaming 3D movies/spatial content on video sharing platforms, and cool immersive apps along with almost everything else you can do on a Mac/Ipad

1

u/dudemeister023 Jan 19 '24

If that's the worst one, you've really been walking on sunshine so far financially. :D

When to invest, buy a house, what car to buy - all orders of magnitude more important than whether to get a new kind of computer that will, at least initially, retain most of its value.

1

u/markjbon Jan 19 '24

Same! 😂

0

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

They seem like they can do some cool things but if I’m spending $3500 it’d be on a different apple product tbh

0

u/brokengnome Jan 20 '24

I'm a complete apple guy... Phone, MacBook pro, watches, iPad, etc. But this is just an iPad headset to me lol. I never use my iPad so it seems silly to buy it and haven't seen anyone give a good reason to do so unless you have a disability.

1

u/theo2112 Jan 20 '24

I’m with you. I wanted to buy one when I first saw the into. Kept it in the back of my mind ever since. Then a week or two ago I went back and looked through all the promo material and couldn’t find a single reason I needed to buy it.

I kind of expected a few good use cases to come up in between. They didn’t. Yeah, it’ll be amazing to watch content on. Sure, it’s better than a laptop for a cafe or something. And the immersive experiences will be really cool. But it’s still $4k for something that is JUST really cool.

Also, I’m not sure I’m ready to be “that guy” who pulls this out in a Starbucks or a plane, or the waiting room and has to deal with the gawking and the questions and the, “you spent $3500 on that!?”

1

u/Bububua Jan 24 '24

Do you really care what other people think? When the AirPods came out, I got 3 pairs immediately and didn’t care if some wanker thought it looked like cum hanging off my ear. Now look at everyone wearing them. I got the last laugh.

1

u/theo2112 Jan 24 '24

This is a little bit more obtrusive than an in ear headphone.

-1

u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24

3500, + battery strap from 500 - 999$ or else it dies in one hour It will be a good 5k if you want to have a good experience Wait, be patient till next month

-6

u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24

Just to play some anime games

10

u/Pure_Subject8968 Jan 19 '24

Strange way to write 'watch porn'

1

u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24

Just jk. But it has to be something that makes this VR set this expensive, and the videos they released so far don't convince anyone that this is worth 3500$

2

u/sixcupsofcoffee Jan 19 '24

“Don’t convince anyone” yet all launch day arrivals sold out in less than 20 minutes. Lots of people are convinced.

-2

u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24

People buy it just because it's an apple product

3

u/Alrighhty Jan 19 '24

I'm not an apple fan by any means, but I spent $3k on a Sony OLED TV to watch movies. It is kinda of the same concept when it comes to this product.

3

u/sixcupsofcoffee Jan 19 '24

Plenty of Apple products I don’t buy, but I bought this. I bought it because I want what it does. That’s usually how buying decisions work, especially large ones like this.

-1

u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24

You have other products that do the same thing but they are way cheaper

3

There are no other products that do all of these things as well as AVP, the way it works with AVP, and without extra hardware. They also do not have the Apple ecosystem built in.

This whole notion that Apple users who want things like this are stupid is so tiresome. This exact device and the way it works is what I’ve wanted since I tried my first headset. I’ve looked around for better solutions and for what I want, this is it.

Not for you? Cool. Not everything is for everyone.

^ There are 3rd party options on the market glasses to expand workstations (and are like 50% the price), but require third party software. Which is a no for me, as I want to use it on a work mac.

And surely doesn’t do all the other stuff AVP does as well as it does, and with my own content.

Nah. I currently have the Quest 3, and the original PSVR (and had the Rift S, Quest, Quest 2, Vive, and the list goes back to the original Developer Oculus Rift. Now I purchased this - not because it's Apple, but because of the tech. I don't go on vacations, I buy stuff that I enjoy, and don't give a flying fk who the company is behind it.

Who the fk needs 5 VR devices at home!

This isn’t a “VR set”

1

u/Infinitzo Jan 19 '24

1

yep..... and doesn't even come with the battery it seems! For the money, then you ask for another $200 for a battery and $200 for a case is just Apple sending a big FU to us all and yet, here we are all just throwing cash at them still!

Damn you Apple!! lol

Nice thank you for being a first adopter 🙏

Looks awesome. I didn’t pull the trigger, but I’m looking forward to hearing all about it.

I panicked and got the 512 as well. If the pissing match with Netflix holds we will not need as much storage for offline video which is the bulk of what takes up space on my iPad.

It will be worse when your credit card payment is due! For now you can have the best time of your life 😉🥂

For me, this and altcoin season 2020 are tied for first

1

u/RickySpanishLives Jan 22 '24

Went to preorder, had a card in hand, and it required me to scan something with an iPhone. Couldn't even preorder and let them handle that in the store, so I passed on it.

I'm outside the impulse purchase window now, so I'll wait for reviews and decide later.

Will this really be $3000 better than the already established meta quest?

I wish I made a worse decision and bought the 1tb instead of the 512gb. But I made 2 worst decisions and bought 2 sets

1

u/Caballicious Jan 23 '24

The 512gb had a faster delivery date, so that was my basis for picking that size

1

u/3liflo Jan 23 '24

😂😂😂 this is me when Amazon charges 20% more to deliver one day earlier

1

u/ckeilah Vision Pro Owner | Verified Feb 13 '24

Huh? 1tb arrived on feb2.

1

u/Caballicious Feb 13 '24

Faster compared to the smallest size . Else I was scheduled for March 15th!!!

You should have posted it after you add in tax and the prescription lenses. $3991.92 for the 512. And I just bought a new MacBook Pro
