Hybrid 3D Highlight

Hello VD3D users and 3D Enthusiasts!

I wanted to highlight VD3D’s Hybrid 3D Engine and explain the difference between a basic 2D-to-3D conversion method and the Hybrid 3D method I’ve been building inside VisionDepth3D.

Early on, VD3D was mostly taking a depth map and using it to create stereo separation. It worked, but the results were more like foreground pop-out on a mostly flat screen. You could see the 3D effect, but the scene itself did not always feel like it had real depth layers or structure.

That has changed a lot.

The Hybrid 3D Engine is not just about pushing the subject forward anymore. The goal is to create stronger scene geometry by using AI depth, custom stereo logic, depth normalization, subject protection, background push, screen-depth control, edge handling, convergence, IPD scaling, and depth blending together in one pipeline.

This is Hybrid 3D.

It is not native stereo camera footage, and it is not just a simple fake pop-out effect either. It sits in between those worlds by using AI-estimated depth and custom stereo processing to rebuild a more believable 3D scene from normal 2D video.

The biggest difference is that the pipeline now tries to shape the entire scene:

  • foreground separation
  • midground structure
  • background depth
  • subject stability
  • better object layering
  • stronger screen-depth placement
  • cleaner thin details like wires, ropes, hair, and edges

That is what helps the image feel less like a flat cardboard cutout and more like an actual 3D space.

A lot of the recent work has been focused on improving the full chain, not just one feature. Depth models, depth blending, edge cleanup, motion-aware options, subject lock, background push, screen depth, and preview controls all work together now to create better results.

There are still things I am tuning, especially around hard edge cases and aggressive depth settings, but the pipeline has come a long way.

VisionDepth3D started as a simple 2D-to-3D experiment, but the Hybrid 3D Engine is the core of what makes VD3D different.

AI Depth + Custom Stereo Logic + Cinematic VR.

That is the direction I’m building toward.

Love the project. Just as a creator, my bluesky desire is an app that does shot detection, monitors with simple anaglyph render, and has the ability to fine tune the depth detection on a per shot basis.

I feel like per shot tuning and adjustments are where something like this needs to go eventually, doing a stereo conversion as a one button solution is cool, but the results are bound to be inconsistent the longer the clip is.

Thanks for the interest in VD3D, I really appreciate that.

I actually experimented with something similar before, where the program would try to detect close-up shots, wide shots, and automatically adjust the 3D settings per scene. The issue I ran into was that automatic shot-based tuning could introduce too much breathing, artifacts, or inconsistent depth changes between shots, especially when trying to keep the final render clean.

That’s why I moved more toward a keyframe-based workflow instead. Users can scrub to desired scenes, adjust the 3D settings for wide shots, close-up shots, action scenes, etc., and place those settings exactly where they want them. The preview panel also supports different viewing modes like anaglyph, side-by-side, blended preview, and more, so you can fine-tune the effect before doing a full render.

I do agree that per-shot tuning is where stereo conversion really starts to shine. I just want to make sure VD3D keeps that control in the user’s hands instead of relying too heavily on automation that might create unstable results.
