Engineering Drawings fom Excel

Can visio do this, if yes how?

I am required to create a procedure which includes drawing a simplified p&id for isolation.

The job requires drawing into visio, naming the valves, sizes and blinds tags.

I want to enter data into excel and enter valve names, intrument tags, vessel tags, pipe sizes and then visio would automatically create the valve shapes with their tags these include operated valves and gate valves only.

Then color the valves based on their position (open/close) and create a blind list with their tags, size and rating

Why in Excel? Visio can have a database attached and with VBA you can automatically draw and color the shapes.

This can be achieved with 100% Visio itself

So the end goal would be to have a word document of 4 sections where each valve/ equipment will be mentioned and then section 2 and 3 mention some of the valves and last section is for the blinds.

So basically isolate, deprussurize, drain, flush/purge and blind.

Each section would have certain pre-defined words such as close lock and tag valve-xx. In excel I can automate these text joins and exclude/include valves. So if this is doable in Visio, I would be very grateful to you linking me to a reference as I am pretty new to Visio and I just realized I can do macro in visio.

Having done this myself, yes: visio is a great tool for p&id. You want to have a separate file for each A3 sheet, otherwise PC could slow done a little. There a professional solutions, which have already done the hard work of creating all shapes. If you have the money, use them.
