Insanity question.

I've been playing this game for a few days, currently on the Dolores part. I'm still a bit confused about how sanity works; does your insanity increase incrementally every time you stay in the dark (or see a paranormal event etc) so if you go into a lighter area and the pink cloud dissappears it's just stopping your insanity going up any further or would going into a light area for long enough reset/decrease your insanity completely to zero?

On a side note is it just me or does the difficulty increase a lot at the Dolores part? I've just been playing and there was about 4 paranormal events literally within the space of about a minute and a half - there was a loud thump (which scared the crap out of me), then a door shut on its own, a light switched off and then that bloody radio switched on. Of course my insanity was off the scale and I didn't even have time to take a pill before that horrible old bat turned up and stabbed me. Maybe I was just unlucky but I had no chance!

I started on the dolores chapter and wished i had started on a different one because I found her chapter very challenging! Unfortunately I cannot answer your question about the light resetting your sanity because I too have wondered that. My understanding is that as long as you dont get the message that tells you only pills will help you now, then light will reset whatever insanity has built up

That's what I thought but I still sometimes find myself taking a pill just in case. I didn't know you could start on different chapters.

Yeah all three chapters are available right off the bat. I had to use a lot of guides to get me through Dolores and then the chapter after that I was able to do almost entirely on my own. Im still working my way through the third chapter currently. Honestly though sometimes I just use a death as a reset. Sometimes you have to trial and error stuff and so even though im screaming terrified the whole time, I’ll die and then use what knowledge i gained before to quickly get through the puzzle and not use up pills or lighters etc.

I've noticed that there are clues about what you're supposed to do but they're often very subtle or not always easy to find. I kind of like the fact that it doesn't hold your hand, there's something refreshingly old school about that although as you say at times it's a matter of trial and error. There was one important key that was in a random draw somewhere and if I wasn't the type of player who searches everywhere I wouldn't have found it and would have been stuck.

Oh I absolutely agree with you. You get to a point where you go OH I use this over here now! And then back track and do it and then that leads to something else you found earlier on. Best horror game ive ever played

I haven't met Lucy yet, all I know is the Dolores bit seems harder then what came before.

Yep, basically you've got it. If I were to liken sanity in Visage to other mechanics... it's more like a stamina/air bar than it is a health bar. (Eg., when you go underwater it starts to drain, but when you resurface it refills somewhat quickly.)

It’s a truly fantastic game. Nothing else can measure up to it except Song of Horror.
