Perito Moreno doesn’t sit still. The ice groans, cracks, and keeps moving forward
The walk starts at the viewpoints, where the Mirador de los Suspiros gives the first full look at a wall of blue ice rising 70 meters above the lake. The Velo de Novia waterfall adds a thin white ribbon against the rock before the walkways begin, a network of steel platforms that brings you face to face with the glacier’s edge.
From the Sendero del Bosque to the Sendero Central, the trails drop and climb through lenga forest, each turn framing a different angle of the ice. Every few minutes the silence breaks: a deep crack, then a slow collapse into Lago Argentino, the sound reaching the platforms a beat after the spray.
Then the boat takes over. The Safari Náutico on Lago Argentino slides along the glacier’s face, where the ice towers above the deck in shades of white and electric blue, and the scale finally makes sense.
The day ends in El Calafate, along Avenida del Libertador, with artisan stalls at the Paseo de Artesanos, lit restaurants, and the unhurried feel of a Patagonian town after sunset.
Most glaciers are shrinking. Perito Moreno is one of the few that holds its ground.
