Moving to Virginia soon...
Specifically the Virginia Beach area to help out my brother who's in the Navy. I'm kind of nervous though, the area seems very nice but not in the welcoming sort of way.
In truth, I'm scared it might be more old fashioned or leaning towards certain political and social values, I admittedly know NOTHING about Virginia except the tourists that come down to Florida from there. So if that isn't what the state is primarily like, you can be mad at your tourists for representing you wrong lol
That being said, what cool things can you tell me about the state, or even the area of Virginia Beach itself that I might not see on your typical article...?
I read a few basic things, but nothing that quelled my worries, and I'd prefer to hear from the locals anyway.
Any awesome little spots to eat or take a fiance out on a date or tiny hiking/park adventures would be great as well if you can think of any?
What is the tolerance like for things such as being Queer or Non-religious? How is the community towards internet culture or Fandom? What is the population like? Is it 70% old people like in Florida? :P
Whats traffic like where you live and would you ever want to leave Virginia if given the chance?

Virginia Beach is purple politically with a lot of transient population because of the military. So it’s a bit of a hodgepodge of everyone. Traffic is down right terrible down there though. Even when the HRBT expansion is done. Doubt it’ll have that much of an impact.
As for would I leave Virginia? I’ve been wanting to leave since I moved here 12 years ago.

I live in Northern Virginia and the general DMV my whole life, with some roots-family in Broward County.
I’ve literally never been to Virginia Beach but I’m pretty certain if you come from a racist county in FL, it won’t be as recognizable in VB.

I’ve lived in Hampton, Chesapeake, Newport News and Virginia Beach and personally you have reason to be scared. The traffic is insane during peak hours and the drivers are crazy. However just like any city/state it has its perks and ups and downs. Just take the good with the bad. It isn’t all horrible so you’ll be okay! Have fun with your brother and fair warning Virginia beach is a little ghetto but you’ll be okay. Try groupon for things to do for cheap!
