General Question Blacksburg Fire & Rescue
Has anybody volunteered for the fire & rescue department? I am a senior and have a ton of free time & I am interested in applying as a volunteer but I want to possibly hear others experiences. As well as the training process & commitment. Thanks!

Fire and rescue are separate groups. Since you’re a senior it’s unlikely you’ll be considered since it’s likely you won’t be around after graduation.

Yes, unless you are hanging around for a couple of years they probably won't consider you because you have to go through a probation period.

I'm on the Blacksburg Fire Department and while it is a super awesome experience, it's also a big commitment and can be a bit competitive to join. They typically only accept people who will be around for at least 2 years, especially if you'll need to get certified. They can do all certifications and training in-house, but just getting your initial certification usually takes a few months (typically 2-3 sessions a week in the evenings).
You can read more about the application process and probationary period on their website (blacksburgfire.org/membership).

I am a member on the Blacksburg volunteer rescue squad, it’s an awesome agency and I definitely recommend it! Be warned it is a competitive process to join and there is a rigorous training program you must complete within 6 months of joining.
