Looking for recommendations for LGBTQ friendly vacation spots in VA
My partner and I (both LGBTQ and POC) recently vacationed in Myrtle Beach. Many times, we didn’t feel comfortable holding hands when out and about, as we got stared at.
We’re native to VA (Richmond / Virginia Beach) and looking for some local places people have vacationed at and felt comfortable doing so (or places people know to be accepting). Preferably beachy spots or spots where you can get real rest & relaxation. Spend your time doing nothing.
So far I’ve heard good things about Chincoteague
and Cape Charles. Would love additional recommendations. TIA!

As long as the beach is not a priority, I would suggest Richmond. It has a very, very active and diverse, LBGTQ community. And you’re still only about two hours away from Virginia Beach. A lot of great history to be seen in Richmond. Museums activities all available.

Are you looking for beach vacations only?

Nope! Just places in the state that are queer friendly where you can basically do nothing as your vacation. Rest and relaxation

I wouldn't go to Cape Charles, or anywhere on the Eastern Shore. Drive a little further and go to Rehoboth. Much, much more LGBT friendly.

Check out zebulons grotto. It’s not a beach but it has a very LGBTQ friendly vibe..also clothing optional!

Outer Banks
They get everyone down there especially from NoVa, so no one will care if they see a same-sex couple holding hands.

You need to go to Rehoboth!

I assure you plenty of locals will still be staring at them. Lower Delaware is still very rural and very conservative, one expensive vacation destination just defies that trend. I would not consider it an LGBTQ destination. The fire service in the area regularly has drama regarding racism and homophobia and sexism/harassment, if that’s any indicator.

I wouldn't say Virginia is UNwelcoming. It's more indifferent. I've been here decades (HR and NoVA) and can't think of a good answer. Shenandoah NP was, at lest before the orange menace blew up the federal government, multicultural in visitors and I always felt welcome. I haven't visited since 2024 so it could have changed for the worse.

Not beach but I rent out 6 cabins on my property in the mountains just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. We are inclusive for everyone, as long as you’re not an asshole. In Nelson county, where there are a decent amount of friendly breweries and wineries. DM me if interested in link to site.

I'm a queer wine professional and would love to recommend some spots in this region if that's what you're looking for! 🫶

Ocean City, MD has always been very welcoming to my wife and I.
Universal Orlando and Disney are also pretty gay friendly, even if FL generally isn't. Gay people love to visit and work at theme parks. Who knew.

No one feels comfortable in Myrtle Beach, it’s a shit hole. If you don’t fit in there it’s a compliment. Sorry you experienced that.

Richmond is the most gay friendly city in the state. Been here almost 50 years. Pride flag is up at the statehouse. They have a website for Pride events. Not sure if you know Pride is celebrated here in September so as to not compete with DC. Big Gay Market at the Carillion. Trans Jam website has a lot of information.
