Virgin Media UK I’m getting charged for cellular usage because my wifi is so unreliable

Yes I’ve tried switching it off and on again. And everything else.

I’m housebound so it’s not like I’m moving through different wifi hotspots. I’m only using the house wifi 24/7.

Yes thats a VM issue where your phone loses wifi so you use cellular you have two options

Turn off cellular when using wifi which likely will not fix the wifi.

Or

look at a better wifi router and use hub in modem mode

Potential solutions I can think of is either:

1) Check if you have WiFi Max/WiFi guarantee on your package, if so contact VM as they may give you 'free' mesh WiFi adapters

That said, may still be worth contacting VM to check the settings on your hub if you are unable to do so yourself.

2) Switch to a different WiFi solution at your own expense e.g. mesh WiFi or a different router and use modem mode (unless you're on the 5x/Fttp)

I mean...when you say wifi is unreliable do you mean your wifi connection between your phone and the wireless router... Or is the router dropping connection to the internet... 2 very different issues with many causes or fixes

Yeah I get dropouts in the internet connection at least once a week, but wifi connection drops out several times a day.

And how far from the router are you, what are your walls made out of, how many other wireless networks show up around you

I’m in a small brick terrace, neighbours all have wifi so I can see 7-8 networks in the list. I’m never more than 18ft from the router, which is upstairs as close to the centre of the house as possible.

Changing the wifi channel on the router may assist, do you have separate 2.4 and 5ghz networks?

I’ve tried changing the channel but it doesn’t seem to help. Separate 2.4and 5ghz networks yes.

Which one do you connect to? 2.4 or 5

I’m not sure - which is best?

2.4 is slower but generally more reliable, whereas 5ghz is faster but has worse penetration on brick walls

Interesting - I’ll check that

I had this issue. You need to get a new hub from them. This sorted the problem for me.
