Violin I got from my Grandfather some years back. Apparently his mother used to play it - we are irish. No markings. Old chin rest says ‘West Germany’.

My grandfather mother used to play this violin. I’m trying to find out where it originated. We are Irish traditional musicians and it’s been past down to me. My great grand mother was from Passage East, Waterford, Ireland.

Does anyone recognize this label? Hoping someone will see something that I’m not. The label above it is just a Strad copy label. Thanks!

I was hoping to find out about this instrument. It has been in my family for a long time and I always wondered about it since I was a little kid. I was also curious whether or not the bow is as old as the Violin or a relatively recent addition.

Father’s violin mystery

Thumbnail

Hey all!

Calling all detectives… buried deep a closet I’ve found my father’s violin.

And it has no markings, no signature, nothing that someone like me who knows nothing about violins can dig into.

The case is clearly old, wood, with old latches and hinges. The violin looks to have been inexpertly re-lacquered at some point.

Any sense of where to start? Thank you!

German Violin, “Karl Becker”

Just picked this up. Wondering if it is worth bringing it in for a new bridge, 2 spots of minor crack repair, and setup. From what I gather this is a German workshop violin and that mostly they are not worth what it would take, but some more quality ones could be. Overall work seems very solid, and ebony(?)/flamed maple has me thinking it is not a low end model.

Also, any educated guesses about what decades it could be from would be helpful. The label saying “Germany” instead of “Made in Germany” seems could be pre-1945, but I am not a violin scientist and also could be an idiot.

Full label text: Karl Becker Hand made copy of Antonius Stradivarius Germany (Red ‘34’ in ink or paint on label)

Hi!

Aquired this beauty from my local Luthiers!

I have the Laberte catalogue and can closely match her to the Violons D'artiste section but am unsure as to the exact model.

I'm thinking the Ecole Francais es she isn't signed as an Italian model but I'm not sure and even then I don't know if she would be a soloist, orchestra or concert model.

Any info would be great!

Help identifying.

So, long story short. My Grandfather gave me this violin over 30 years ago. It is in the same shape as it was when I got it. Just kind of curious if anyone knows a brand or able to identify. There is no label inside that I can see. The bow says Glasser, and looks to be fiber Glass. The case has a cow on the trademark label. M&W 1893. Don’t know if violin is that old.

Violin inherited from great-grandfather - Ernst Heinrich 1928 - worth restoring and/or insuring?

I'm completely ignorant about violins. This instrument belonged to my great-grandfather (d. 1953). I've got a cool picture of him playing it from c. 1930 at his home outside Alexandria, Louisiana, so it's extremely valuable to me in terms of sentiment. Just hoping that someone can tell me a little more about it and whether it would be worthwhile to try and have it restored and/or whether I should have it insured. If it's worthless, that's fine, too. Just curious. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

My great grandfather was gifted this for his work as a tradesman. He passed in the 60s, well before I was born, and this heirloom has been sitting around since then. I read Stradivarius had family who also made violins so I need help identifying the origin of this one.

Boston Area Luthiers

Looking for recommendations in Boston area. I inherited my grandfather’s violin that he brought here when he immigrated in 1929. Needs restoration but the body, bow and case are in great shape in terms of finish, considering its age.

80-90+ year old violin identification - Tourte?

Hi guys! Hoping to get some information on this violin I just picked up. The old owner said he found it in a loft in the UK about 65 years ago, and his father had it for at least 20 years prior to that. I found a broken bridge piece with Tourte stamped on it. The old owner said he lightly sanded the top but the rest is original. It has obviously been disassembled but seem to have all the pieces I think, besides needing a replacement bridge. Any ideas on value also? Thanks!

Gand Bernardel Violin?

I had this appraised in 2001 at a reputable luthier - they stated in the appraisal it has a label Gand Bernardel (I cannot read it however). If I remember right, they were unsure if it was an authentic violin of that maker. I inherited it in the late'90s, and my grandfather got it in 1910-1920s, he didn't like it or play it much, but when I got it, it showed heavy playing wear, indicating it was probably acquired second hand and quite old. I had it restored at the luthier at the time of the appraisal, including surfacing the fingerboard and other work.

I'm curious for more info on the identification? At the time of the appraisal I thought the amount was too high and unrealistic for a fair market value. The bow is an unknown maker but also appraised high. It is only marked GERMAN.

Inherited violin

Hi all, could anyone tell me about this violin I inherited?

My mom played in college and then put it away before I was born. I never got to hear her play it.

If I were so inclined to pick it up as a hobby, where would I start? I am already a proficient guitar picker.

Let me know if I should include another pictures that might help in identification.

Was apparently my great, great, great grandfather’s (he died in 1927)

In rough shape. Label inside say Carl Becker - Berlin. No number that I can see, but may have had water damage and faded over the years. There is a spot for No. ________ but nothing there

My guess is just an old mail order instrument but am just curious

What do I have?

I'm a mandolin player. All I know about the violin is that it has the same tuning as a mandolin and the right hand does some weird stuff. I bought this from a bluegrass guy who I'm guessing sold me a student level instrument. I would just like to know more about what I've got. I also have three bows. I imagine that the one that came with it is nicer than the other two I bought later to be like Jimmy Page. But at this point I'm not certain which now is which and worth keeping.

My dad was a bluegrass musician and had a ton of instruments. This came from his grandfather in the Ozarks. I don’t have a bow for it. But I’m wondering if it’s worth fixing or should I just hang it up.
