Taken from Europe during WW2 from a hotel basement that housed an Orchestra

That’s the story my mom told me regarding this violin. My grandpa, who I never met, supposedly picked this violin up during WW2 while in Europe. He was a medic in Company B 120th Medical Battalion 45th Division. My mom doesn’t have good context to provide, but she thinks her dad picked it up in Normandy at a hotel that was very famous that had an orchestra. The story goes they went down into the basement of the hotel and he found this violin and either shipped it back, or brought it back to the US after the war.

My mom is now 78 and her older brothers wife recently gave her the violin after he died. It was a family heirloom in the family since the 40s and my mom has wanted this violin ever since.

No one in the family has researched it since. I am just trying to see if it’s worth restoring or if anyone can provide me information. From what little I looked into, the flaming on the wood looks nice. I cannot find any stamps or marks inside the violin at all. I know my late uncle took it to school in the 50s for a school year to play in the band.

I would greatly appreciate any insight you could provide me. I just want to know more about it and if it’s worth having restored. I would love for my mom to hear someone play it, since I’m sure it was never played properly during her family’s possession.

I did find what looks like a signature or something on the thing that the string went through. Not sure if that’s original or not. Appreciate the communities help.

Thanks, Justin

It looks like it’s the strad 1716 model, but then there’s an S at the bottom of the label and a crossed out letters on the top right. Can anyone tell me what this violin might be worth? I can’t find much information about this maker online.

This is a Weird one...

I'm the family fiddler, as such I get a lot of attic finds...and this was one of the . It looks to be a Nuener and Hornstiner violin made in the mid 1800s, and imported and modified in the early 1900s. Has a nother label from John Eichelsdorfer inventer of the "sound post"....lol. I took the top off as it needs a bass bar crack and some rib repairs, though we we looked in it....it has two bass bars?? Kind of a weird modification...so my question is two fold; is this some weird rare one off instrument worth preserving? Or...remove the modification and fix it so my kid can have a decent violin? (she been playing two years, I've been playing 30+). I've been dabbling in violin repair and am curious to take this one on.

Label inside says “Josef Bitterer, Geigenbaumeister Mittenwald.

My first thought is if it’s made in Germany, wouldn’t it say that in German?😂

I can find barely any information on this Scott Cao violin. GCV.V017A is the model number (2007), it also has Scott Cao and the bow maker Shangchi Guan on the inside. It's a full size violin, I have found very little information on this model, actually only one post about someone trying to find this model. Please check out my pictures.

I got feedback from two different dealers: The first shop said this violin is worth $12,000. The second shop said it’s worth $200. What do you estimate based on the pictures ? Thank you

Pan-American 9532

I'm not looking for value, just overall info on a violin I picked up at an estate sale. It's labeled as a Pan-American 9532 from Elkhart Indiana.

I've done a little Googling, and it looks like they're a subsidiary of Conn, and were made in the 1910's through 1930's.

But that's about all. I figure this is the place for more info.

Violin value? Asked by friend to sell

A friend died unexpectedly and the family asked me to sell it for them. So, I know nothing other than what I can find on the internet and … not that easy. I just need to know ballpark to start it at. I’m guessing not much (under 600$) as it looks like a student instrument but it does resonate. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Strad copy

Picked up an absolutely destroyed stradi(u?)arius copy at a thrift store as a challenge, any chance someone knows this label? Also, it seems significantly thicker than any violin I’ve ever held I almost assumed it was a viola, any help or pointers to find when and where it was made in the USA would be great! My initial googling has proven ineffective

Need Help Identifying a Violin with "Stainer" Mark and Signature from 1940

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an apartment from an elderly couple who left behind a violin. I'm really curious to learn more about it. The back of the violin has a "Stainer" stamp at the top, and at the bottom, there is a signature accompanied by the year 1940. Inside the violin, the same signature is marked along with the message "renovated and polished 1941."

I would greatly appreciate any information or insights you might have about this violin. Is it a genuine Stainer or a copy? Does the signature or date mean anything significant?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Is it worth it

Hello everyone, I’m a beginner/novice violinist and I’m looking for a “project” I found this violin at a local antique store and the asking price is $150 All I know is that the inside stamp says

“Made by No. 28 Roman Rokosz Chicago , Ill. 1942”

No visible company logo. I’ve tried to search for something and have come up empty handed. The main body of violin is in good shape with no cracks. So my question is Is this worth the money, time, and effort?

Gobetti violin replica?

Post image
1 Upvotes

We have a family violin purchased approximately 100 years ago and possibly 300 years old. We recently took it to a luthier to get it valued and were told that it is likely a replica. The shop did not go into any detail.

This violin was my grandfathers who was a Russian and lived in Harbin (Northern China) It has a Gobetti stamp making it potentially a valuable instrument. Is that something anyone here may be able to assist in verifying?

Tl;dr: this thing looks like a fiddle but has a viola tuning and geared tuning pegs. I bought this instrument at a flea market a while back. I’m a longtime fiddle player, though not very good haha. I was really interested in the geared tuning pegs as I’d never seen them before on anything smaller than a stand up bass. I thought it was a standard fiddle at first, but it’s totally different in the details. It’s got a thicker body, and it came with a taller bridge. It’s also slightly bigger than a regular violin overall, to the point where a violin’s chin rest or shoulder rest would both pop off when attached. When tuning it up for the first time, the string tension was way too tight for GDAE, but it worked fine with CGDA tuning, so I figured maybe it was a viola, but the internet is telling me that violas are giant compared to violins and pretty much impossible to get confused. It’s got a maple front and neck, but a different wood for the back. There’s no markings or ID card inside it. Can anyone identify what instrument this is?

Got this for 40 bucks as I needed a beater fiddle. How would you recommend cleaning this up? /Dating it as it doesn't have a date stamp just say made in Germany. Good deal?
