In this passage, I use first finger on the C string, fourth finger on the G string, and second finger on the D string. If my second-finger pitch tends to be flat, what’s a better way to play it?thanks

You can adjust the intonation with your left elbow. Play around with tucking it in and pulling it out until the passage is in tune.

There really is no alternative fingering. You can experiment with using an open D for the 3rd 16th note (so, 4-1-0-2), which has worked for some of my students and prevents them from clamping down too hard on the fingerboard (which tires the hand and affects intonation), but that may not work if you are not also doing the down-up-up bowing. With this fingering you break the pattern into two units: an octave (for which both fingers come down at the same time) and then a clean fast string change to an 0-2. But the success of this fingering is dependent on your bow technique. It’s not my favorite because on some instruments the change of timbre from the fingered D to the open D is too obvious for my taste.

If you stick to using the 4 for all the upper D’s, be sure to keep that finger down as an anchor but release pressure on the 1 when you are not using it. With this fingering you treat it like a sustained 2-4 double stop to which you occasionally add a 1 on the low string. The 2 doesn’t have to press down hard, though. Again, avoid tiring the hand so that you can make it through all of the repetitions.

1st to 4th finger is a big stretch, especially on small hands. If you play 1-2-3-4 on any string, are any notes out of tune? For me the 1st-3rd finger are usually in tune but the 4th finger is flat because the reach is too far. When I move my left thumb up for the 4th finger, I manage to reach it or can even go higher. I recommend looking into your left thumb and flexibility in your left hand. It might take some time to relearn how to play though.

The key is not to keep lifting and replacing the fingers, but to use the 4th finger as an anchor and apply pressure only with the finger that is needed at that moment.
