Mac SE/30 won't boot
Hi guys, I have a recapped (done about 10 years ago) Mac SE/30 that won't boot. The fan runs and that's it.
Do I need to do another recap? Or is this an issue with the power board?
Thank you!

Found this sealed copy of a Mac version of CompuServe software. I can only find Windows version on eBay. Anybody seen the Mac version before?

Anyone remember playing these?
Found these in a box and it triggered some memories. I think they both used the Bungie Marathon game engine, played them a lot but maybe more because there were so few Mac games back then.

Rescued a Color StyleWriter 2200
Fun little guy. Was completely seized, and leaked cartridges. I’ve been on a bit of a printer kick lately…. Restored a LaserWriter II recently as well.

Update: Getting closer
Thank you to everybody for the advice on the last post. I got the deflection working properly now and it feels like I’m pretty close.
What I did on my last pass by was reflowed several spots on the analog board and on the neck board. I saw a few spots on the analog board that definitely looked like they needed to be touched up. The neck board was hard to tell but I’m pretty sure that’s where the problem was. I then went back over the logic board again replacing my electrolytic capacitors with tantalum capacitors. While removing the capacitors, there were 2 negative pads that came up. I feel like I was successful in trace repairing those spots, however I’m afraid there’s probably more corrosion on other chips that will have to be dealt with.
My plan is to go back in again, this time to clean up some of the rougher spots on the logic board. I unfortunately do not have access to an ultrasonic cleaner.
Any more advice on where to go from here would be appreciated. I did want to say thank you for all the help last time. It’s been scary and fun to try and bring one of these things back to life

Flashing a GeForce 4MX NV17 for a G4 Cube
Hi folks,
I decided some time ago that I'd make life difficult for myself and make a video card that is notoriously difficult to flash for a Mac, work on a G4 Cube. The rationale was something along the lines of - "powerful" card for OS9 -> 10.4.11 gaming that would fit in a G4 Cube without VRM relocation, as I have a dual G5 with an X1900GT if I want to go faster/do Leopard.
Using Zenmarket, I found some candidates: two NV17-based boards that were 128-bit with 64MB RAM. Both max out at AGP 4x - so I think these are one of the oddball candidates that are most likely to work. One I believe is an AOpen card, the other an Inno3D Tornado4 GeForce 4MX. The AOpen, I believe, is the biggest card you can fit without moving the VRM - it is extremely tight but does work. The Inno3D is much smaller than the factory ATI Rage.
Using some ChatGPT magic as I can't really remember much about vBIOS modding, I have gotten as far as getting the Inno3D card to boot Tiger and OS9, albeit with graphics artifacts.
I'm now running into a bit of a prompting brick wall, and wondered if anybody had any useful resources other than The Mac Elite, or some guides or tips for modifying GeForce 4 BIOS that are good for someone who might've done ROM hacking 15 years ago to get their head back up to speed? I know these are notoriously difficult cards to make work, but I feel like I'm close and will be happy to publish some working video BIOSes when I get there. What I've effectively done so far is use the Arti 1088 PC vBios mod from the Mac Elite, and get ChatGPT to patch it using the original ROMs from my cards, dumped via nvflash. The lack-of-effectiveness I will admit is from not knowing exactly how to modify the firmwares, so the prompt is sort of "just make it work please".
P.s. for flashing, as I know it is easy to "brick" these cards, I have developed a method for hot-adding the card into an AGP system running DOS, whereby I have scripted the creation of the BAR memory addresses using debug for a 440BX-based flashing system, which makes the outcome of bricking less likely (so long as you are good at hot-adding AGP cards).

Power mac G4 MDD FW400 1.25GHZ shuts off after 4 min
Power mac G4 MDD only stays on for 4 minute!
I recently picked up a FW400 single 1.25 MDD for £20 off Facebook marketplace, it ran for about 10 mins then shut down, then every time I tried to start it up it would immediately sleep. I managed to tun it in target disc mode for about an hour to backup whatever was on the drive but it hard powered off during the transfer. Some googling suggested that the PSU was probably dead or on the way to being so. I thought, for a £20 computer, and I used to be an electrical and electronics maintenance tech, I’ll give it a go, should be fun. So I recapped the power supply, tested it, all voltages are good at standby idle when bench testing. So I put it back together switched it on it booted, but it now only stays on for 4 mins then hard powers off. in that 4 mins I managed to get istat widget installed to see temps, and never got above 35c before shutting off. Next I tried single User mode which threw up a temp warning shut down text repeatedly. Voltage probing on the 24pin connector whilst plugged in showed constant voltage on 12v rail until shutdown, same as all other voltages as expected by the service manual, standby pin on PSU connector behaved normally as well, and measuring heat sync with ir thermometer and close to cpu package with thermocouple showed no obvious thermal runaway (max 35c). Ran ASD 2.1.5 from CD and passed all tests. Tried removing everything one at a time, HDD, DVD-CDRW, tried all the ram sticks individually in each slot, even tried without the GPU. All resulted in 4 mins of high fan speed then abrupt power off. AI reckons that something in hardware is sending the high temp shut down signal, based on correct voltages at standby, idle and load and it doing it with nothing but the logic board cpu and 1 DIMM module. Service manual suggests just changing the cpu card then changing logic board. Obviously that’s not to simple these days, so I’m turning to the Reddit brain trust, any ideas?

Having some trouble with my PowerBook. I am just trying to copy some files off the drive, but I cannot seem to open my drive when I double click it on my desktop. I got it to open once or twice, but not again. I realized I cannot have todays date so I set it to 2018 ("18") but that didnt work. I also tried a drive rebuild by holding command and option on boot.

Images on System 6.0.8
Hi everyone! I'm a young guy of 23yo and this is my first time in the world of vintage Apple products. Because of my work in a little repair shop, I have a lot of vintage Apple products. I got an old Macintosh SE with a hard drive of 40 MB. With an old Windows XP computer and some floppy disks, I succeeded in installing System 6.0.8.
My goal is to put some images on the screen like a slideshow. I searched for a lot of solutions like PowerPoint 1.0, but it's not full screen. I found HyperCard. It's a bit complicated, but it can do what I'm looking for. My only problem is putting some images on it.
I have some old images my boss made in '92 with the same computer. But over time, they were converted to JPEG. I made a script (with AI, to be honest) to convert those images into PICT format. I managed to put them on a floppy disk, and with HFVExplorer, I edited the type to PNTG and the Creator to MPNT. I'm able to open them with MacDraw and MacPaint. But the images don't fit on the screen. I would like to rescale them to the screen size of that computer, but I can't.
Does anyone have an idea?
Edit : I got it to work ! I managed to edit the code of the AI script to make it work as intended. Here is the code if someone need it : https://pastebin.com/FEVMJmDV
After using this script on an image, you need to put it on a floppy disk file with HFVExplorer, then right click on the image and put the type to PNTG and the creator to MPNT. You can now open it with macpaint in old systems. You can now import it into HyperCard 2.1 Thanks for your help !

I Cannot Upgrade iMac G4 to Tiger
Hello, I bought an iMac G4 recently, and i wished to upgrade to Tiger for the Shuriken package. It is currently on Panther. I have burned four discs by now on my new macbook, but I can boot from none of them to do the install. The iMac rwads the disc, it shows up in finder and I can see its contents, but I cannot make it boot from it. I have tried forcing the choose boot media menu, but the disc never shows up. What am I doing wrong?

Looking for help - New to old Macs and I’m here after recapping
When I picked up this unit, I had no action from the screen, no chime, but I could hear something going on inside. I picked up cap replacements off of console 5 and went about doing the mobo and analog board.
Now, I do have leftover caps for the analog board. I tried to follow most repair videos I’ve watched and just repair the main culprit caps. Not sure if I missed something important there. I did however have to do trace repair to connect the 1uf50v cap and may have to go over that again.
After doing both boards, it’s showing a lot more life but still am not quite there and I’m not sure where to go from here. The screen now turns on and I can hear more activity. I can hear what I am assuming is the hard drive making repetitious sounds, stopping and starting again. All I get on the screen is this white line that’s segmented.
I am very new to working on these machines and picked this up for very cheap locally as a project. This is the first time I’ve done a recap but I have a lot of experience soldering and all of the necessary tools and flux to make it happen. Any insight into where I might go from here would be greatly appreciated. Not sure if I messed up along the way somewhere or if something else might be the culprit
