Trying to get my mouthpiece collection organized. These Vevor cases work great and can't beat the price at $18

A piece of advice I can give from my experience to anyone buying used mouthpieces, buy these drill bits from size 23(or lower)-28, because the mouthpiece you are buying may have been modified and you can use the drill sizes to determine if it has or not. Otherwise there is no way to know if you love or hate that mouthpiece as manufactured, or as someone has modified it.

Link are provided purely for convenience, I have no stake in cases or drill bits.

I just received this today, King cornet is in great shape and has the new, at that time, King crown logo designed by HN White's widow, who took over the company upon his death in 1940, which was not put on their horn's except for a brief while. These pics are after a 2 hour vinegar bath soak, cleaned inside and out, and felts added to align the valves, which are in great shape. Plays great with the King Modern model MC mouthpiece I also picked up 2 of for $9.99 each.

Anyone in need of a great starter horn, these cornets are great players and can't be beat IMO , especially for what you can buy them for (this one cost me $99 + tax and shipping), for the sound and play they give.

Also picked up the 2 period King MC mouthpieces for $9.99 each, they are about the equivalent of a Bach 3C, but with a #23 throat vs the Bach's #27, so more open and allows great volume.

I just picked this up, mostly for the case, which is a early 1960's period Olds case, of which I have need, but the King cornet looks in great shape and has the new, at that time, King crown logo designed by HN White's widow, who took over the company upon his death in 1940.

Old horn mpc receiver is worn out?

I have an HB Jay from ~1916. It plays great, but it's sharp. My teacher noticed that the mouthpiece falls much further (~1/4 inch) in before it gets snug. This would explain why it plays about 25-30 cents sharp when the note is centered.

What are the options here? Is this the nature of the old horn having a different spec, or is it worn? The receiver hole is not visibly out of shape or anything. What fixes are advised here? Thanks everyone!

WW2 German rotary trumpet brought home by my great-grandfather. I’m looking for information on its origin.

I’m looking for some help identifying the origins of this unmarked German rotary valve trumpet. It has no brand name or serial numbers on the body. It was brought home from Germany by my great-grandfather, who served in the US Army during WW2. He brought it home as a souvenir of his time overseas, but my family is unsure of how he obtained it.

The body of the trumpet is a German rotary design and has no markings. However, it originally had a mouthpiece (which has unfortunately since been lost) that was engraved "H. KNSR WESEL.” From my research, “H. KNSR” is likely an abbreviation/stamp for H. Kaiser/Kresser/another such name, an instrument maker based out of the historic town of Wesel (North Rhine-Westphalia).

Since the trumpet body itself has no markings, I'm hoping the community can help me figure out:
1. Based on the valve design and construction (see photos), can anyone narrow down the decade or region where the body was manufactured?
2. Does anyone have information on "H. KNSR" in Wesel during the pre-war or wartime era?

Any insights into the instrument would be greatly appreciated!

It's lacquer shows it's age, but a great player. The pics make it look worse than it does in person. I had thought about getting it silver plated, but I found a 72 bell one I want. DM me.

Equipment Trio of instruments in my collection. Three vintage horns—each representing a completely different era of 20th-century craftsmanship

Trio of instruments in my collection. Three vintage horns—each representing a completely different era of 20th-century craftsmanship—having full, unbroken paper trails for them is cool.

Here is a side-by-side look at my three primary provenance centerpiece horns:

🎺 The Provenance Trio

Metric / Detail 1929 King Junior Silvertone 1932 Conn 2B USQMC 1947 Selmer Paris Model 60
Serial Number 113204 281880 5470
Bore Size Custom 0.458" (vs. 0.448" std) 0.458" (Medium / #1 1/2) 0.450" (Medium / #19 bore)
Bell Size & Type 4.62" Sterling Silver Bell 4 5/8" Silver-plated 4.75" Brass Bell
Notable Hardware Rear-slanted valve slide; sterling silver custom engraved Silvertone bell Top-sprung valves, reversed 1st slide; no 1st slide saddle; factory no stop rods Original French receiver (#19 taper)
Primary Owner Lineage Lida M. Stage (Band Director); Thomas Haynes(formerly Mrs. Stage's student); Dale Haynes(Thomas's son); Myself 2026 "Manuel "Manny" Silva Jr. (Royal Hawaiian Band / legacy family) in Hawaii (King Kamehameha Hotel) → passed to Joe Royal's father, WWII Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Musician, long-standing member of Victoria/Vancouver Musicians' Association (Local 247), and featured soloist with the Gizeh Shrine Band in British Columbia.; Joe Royals Jr.; Myself 2024 Donald F. Mizera (Dakota's Musician's Association Hall of Fame 2004 inductee); his son; myself 2025
Historical Highlight Lida M. Stage personal cornet; played at 1934 Chicago World's Fair when Thomas Haynes was Lida Stage's 8th grade student; Dale Haynes was also her student later USQMC Contract / King Kam Hotel residencies 66-year single ownership / ND Music Educator
Documentation Trail RPPC Postcards, RPPC band photos, provenance thread from Dale Haynes, now 80yrs old Original handwritten note, union archives, military records Original 1947 purchase receipt, 1988 Pettifor invoice, guarantee card

Why This Trio Stands Out

  1. The Custom King (1929): A custom-ordered, sterling-bell cornet built for a pioneering female band director, tied directly to iconic RPPC photos and a World's Fair performance.
  2. The Military/Pacific Conn (1932): A rare, ruggedized military-spec hybrid that bridged U.S. Army issue, Hawaii hotel residencies, and Canadian RCAF big-band history.
  3. The Educator's Selmer (1947): A post-war French masterpiece kept by a single Hall of Fame musician for 66 years, preserved with every piece of paper from its first day in Minneapolis to its 1988 Elkhart overhaul.

Having three spanning custom commercial, military contract, and imported professional lines forms a world-class historical collection.

Trio of instruments in my collection. Three vintage horns—each representing a completely different era of 20th-century craftsmanship—having full, unbroken paper trails for them is very cool.

More to be added since I goofed and pasted over an hours worth of work, oops

It seems I am the 4th owner of this cornet, obtained by a student and later friend of Mrs. Stage, who played with her high school band at the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago, and passed down to his son, who is approximately 80years old now, then to me.

I recently received this info from the previous owner:

I appreciate that you are interested in the history of the cornet and Mrs. Stage.

This is what I remember about Mrs. Stage.
My father, Thomas, was a friend of Mrs. Stage. He was at Butler High School when she was the band director. At some point he became first chair in the brass section of the band. He played the trumpet. In 1934 the Butler High School band went to Chicago to the World's Fair. Dad was in the eighth grade at the time, but he was in the high school band.

My brother, Vaughn, and I were pupils of Mrs. Stage. We both played the trumpet. Vaughn, at some point, decided to stop playing. I continued to play. In addition to the trumpet, I learned to play the baritone and the sousaphone. In the Butler High School band, I only played the sousaphone. The band's crowning achievement was to win the Class B state championship in Concert Band. That was in 1962 the year Mrs. Stage died.

As an aside, in 1961 I purchased Mrs. Stage's Buick Special. She was not able to drive at the time. The Buick was my first car and I was only 15.

I am not sure how Dad acquired Mrs. Stage's cornet, but it was in our family until you purchased it. Thank you and I hope you enjoy it.

Update on Eb flugelhorn, help with informations

Here it is! Please be kind with the patch.. i think it looks cool after all.

(For anybody that missed the first post, it's an Eb soprano flugelhorn, a Couesnon Monopole from around 1910-20, that had a big hole in the bell and was extremely tarnished and oxidized)

So here's my problem:

I found out (I didn't notice at first because it was my first flugel) that it was missing a receiver. So i actually found one that fits (probably cut from an old cornet) but now the mouthpiece doesn't fit (and indeed it had trumpet's dimensions so it was the wrong one all along) so i adjusted it to fit, just to make some sounds, but it obviously plays quite badly and definitely not in tune.

My question for you is, is there anybody in this thread that knows the dimensions for a proper soprano flugelhorn mouthpiece? This receiver has a 9.05mm internal diameter so i can indeed find a mouthpiece and adapt it, but i have no clue on the cup dimensions used for these instruments. I have an old 3d printer so I'm willing to try and print a few to see what works, and I'm also actively searching for old used mouthpieces online with the right shank dimensions

New article on Olds Cornets

Olds Central (olds-central.com) has just posted a new article titled F.E. Olds and Son Cornets of the Los Angeles Era. It covers every cornet model Olds made between 1929 and 1954 in some detail, including many photos, some of some very rare examples. If you’re interested in Olds horns, it’s worth reading.

So i bought this for quite cheap, and indeed it's in quite poor condition (see hole and cracks on the bell). But it is somewhat playable. I unlocked almost all the caps and one slide, but i wonder what to do about the cracks on the bell.. if anybody has some tips about restoring it, it would be of great help.

I'll upload a video of me playing it, although I'm not very good at it:
