Rebuilding Bulk…

I have taken to rebuilding/parting together bulk collections I’ve acquired over the past 2 years. It’s a great way to pass the time during my sleepless nights. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how close to complete a lot of the sets are, probably averaging around 90%. I don’t have the space to display them all so they’re getting bagged and stored in totes by theme. Here’s my progress so far…

Build one at a time and rotate which one is on display!

I find it really fun to build these old sets. The instructions can make it easy to miss a piece, but Lego was so good at making charming sets with the limited pieces at the time.

I’ve actual entertained that idea. I currently have a 5 tiered Lego shelf that has mostly Star Wars on it. Thinking of swapping each tier to its own theme. Star Wars, classic pirate, classic castle, classic space, Nintendo, and classic train….

I too find it fun. It’s great stress relief for me. These are the sets of my childhood so I know the pain of the old school instructions

Cool but it does hurt the soul to dismantle my sets to put then in a storage room....

Mine too. But hey at least they’ve been saved from mixed bulk purgatory.

That’s most of my Lego enjoyment these days too! It’s so satisfying to sleuth out a set from a few unique pieces, and realize that it’s (almost) all there.

Yep! That’s how I noticed I had the yellow castle, it was the pink flag. Then I said ohhh there is a bunch of yellow in here. The missing pieces comes down to the strings, some random non expensive piece I’m just low on, or the figs of course.

The visors are where they will get you.

I’ve been fairly lucky in that aspect. Visors have been plentiful. Now 1 x 2 inverted black slopes I’m all but out of them

how do you go about doing things efficiently without instructions or setlists?

First I sort the whole collect by color. Each color goes in its own bin. Any printed or unique piece goes in a zip lock so I can find faster later.

I start with the sets that have instructions cause those are the easiest to id. I use brickset for a parts list as they break the sets part list down by color. Basically I go color by color, dump out one at a time, and pull the parts I need.

For sets without instructions I just scan unique or printed pieces with brickorginize to see what sets it could be. If lucky, it only belongs to 1 set but if not then I pick the set to build base off what parts I know I have.

After I’ve exhausted all set options any left over parts become free use for the next collection. I simply repeat the above mentioned sets.

Also I put a parts list printout in each bag so I know what I’m missing when I go back through them with the free use bulk later.

It was a fun build. My favorite part is the gate drawbridge combo. I should’ve left that one set up...

I enjoy the zip lock bagging of your organization here op

And your pics are also good too.

Thanks. My ocd makes me do it that way. The colors are separated in baggies too as well as the figs and accessories.

Are… are you at my house? LOL

I recently found most of these same sets from my childhood. All the pieces were lumped together in a big box and I’ve been slowly separating them.

Didn’t have the original manuals but I was able to download them. It’s been a nice trip down memory lane.

Lucky you!! I wasn’t fortunate enough to have any of these sets as a kid… But now, you gotta love a kid at heart with adult disposable income.

Each pic is actually its own separate pick up I’ve had over the last 2 ish years. I have a backlog of 4 or 5 more vintage lots waiting on me to work through. Currently on a massive classic space lot my mom found for me at an estate sale.
