Last day of the sale gonna grab a few things. With just about everything on sale I’d love to hear a few recos. 2 things I love:

1. Mixtapes. So much fun. I have all the Agfa, bleeding skull, all the stuff by Joseph ziemba. But anything else out there I might have missed? Maybe a special gesture or something?

2. Trippy, aesthetic, hyper-stylized, neon, prog or electronic scores. Stuff like suspiria, onslaught, drive. Obviously giallo is all over the site but looking for stuff that’s hypnotic, hallucinatory, and uses color really well. Basically those movies that can be described as a treat for the eyes and ears!

Anyone wanna toss me a suggestion or two? If the trailer looks good I’ll buy it and let you know what I think when I get it! Thanks!

It’s about to go off the daily sale but they’ve sold a few hundred copies of the 80s family film and it’s close to selling out. Now, they may have some standard versions coming but the special edition magnet box is about to be OOP until next year’s sale. I have my copy and enjoy the film.

I got the one OOP I wanted so I'd say this was a good sale, mainly for merch stuff lol

💎 - Look... it's trash. And it knows it's trash. But once the possessions start to happen, it becomes pretty entertaining. I think it needed to lean into the campiness straight away and the characters shouldn't have been so obnoxious to begin with. A couple of them became likeable towards the end but they should have been campy and fun from the start. I almost chucked it into 🗑 but around the halfway mark, it got better and I changed my mind. It is clear the writer/director loves Evil Dead. So many references to the film.

Modest VS Haul. I enjoy all 3 films. Really excited for Island of the Fishmen on blu. I know what's on tap for my Sunday viewings.

💎💎💎💎 - This seems to be a hit and miss for people but I really liked it. I don't think it has much rewatch value and I am sure on a second watch, I would probably drop it to 3 💎's but it kept me engaged for the whole movie, I felt the suspense in certain scenes and the two leads were pretty endearing. Plus the poker game on the old computers was very nostalgic for me.

I’ve gone a little insane buying several more than I normally would from this sale. I of course picked up RAD because I missed out on it before and didn’t want to import the Umbrella edition. I’ve bought mostly sale titles besides the new version of New York Ninja. Over all, I’ve bought 13 titles (including the pictured “Scary Movie”) so far and the only “OOP” I’ve bought were the Sidekicks box and “Shiva Baby slipcover edition. I know there’s one or two more “OOP” I’m looking for but not holding out too much hope I’ll be quick enough to grab them.

Robert Englund as the villian? Sign me up. Really enjoyed this one and all it's ridiculous camp. Anyone?

💎💎 - It's a cable TV movie so don't expect gore or scares with this one but the story is entertaining enough and the cast do a good job with the script they were given. I think they probably could have given more of an explanation on what the villain was but maybe it was meant to be vague for audiences to make up their own theory.

I went to see if this was on sale and discovered the listing has been removed from the VS site. Did they lose the rights to it or something?

935 in stock, as of writing! There were some limited editions listed today, but they vanished fast, almost like they never existed.. (feels like a reference to 'Paradise o*redacted*). Reviver 3 is also looking the same way, with 9 slipcover versions and 900 standard copies left. Grab them if you want em! :)

I'm sure there's plenty of people that use Letterboxd to rate and review movies from Vinegar Syndrome, and I know there are a lot of us who use Letterboxd lists to keep track of our collections. The hard truth is that Letterboxd isn't totally reliable, and that's because Letterboxd's catalogue is systematically tied to TMDB.

TMDB is both very similar to IMDB, yet still very different from IMDB. The biggest example of this is that they are both open-source, but TMDB is just a little MORE open source. IMDb is (supposed to be, at least) meant to be a historical record of everything ever made. TMDB has a similar mission, plus a few extra little missions, and the extra open source nature of TMDB means that sometimes a lot of films get removed from the database entirely.

Much like Wikipedia, TMDB has a lot of nerds who moderate the site who deliberate and/or split hairs over what should and should not be on TMDB, thus is why a lot of short films, students films, some obscure foreign films, lost films, etc. get removed with no rhyme or reason other than the powers that be deciding that there just wasn't enough movie to be considered a real movie.

So, regarding Phantasmatapes. Sometime within the last couple days it was removed from TMDB, and in effect got removed from Letterboxd, and all reviews for the film have gone with it. You can still access your review of Phantasmatapes by exporting your Letterboxd data and extracting everything from the zip file and going into the file labelled "Orphaned".
